It's ok with a 360 pad if you fly the ship like a turret. But if you really want to fly the ship whilst aiming the guns, the 360 pad isn't very good for that. But at least it feels like I'm flying. Whereas with the mouse it doesn't feel like I am flying a ship at all.

I've been using disabling the IFCS and flying. I've pushed black-outs and red-outs to the very edge. I must admit it makes for a more enjoyable experience. But it still feels a bit too arcadey for me. That said, I am kinda warming up to it... :D

So this is with the xbox controller. I have one, but only really use it for PES. Oh well.

EDIT

No I cant do it! xbox controller space ships - arrrgh!

So, if ED's alpha was good, it means any other must be too ?

FD have set the level when they have released ED Alpha. CIG have delayed their Alpha for 6 months, they had all the information about how ED was received, they have larger team working on project, they knew which level they should have achieved. I do not see viable reasons why AC should not have surpassed ED. But it did not.

Serious, I don't think you appreciate that the days of telling other backers they don't know what they are talking about by virtue of having some higher knowledge are over. AC is out. We've been playing it today.

Have you tried it out? Yes/No? If no you should listen to what others are saying who have tried it. If yes, then please share your views, would love to hear your thoughts at its current stage, including both strengths and weakness. I can't ask you again.

I checked it out. It's good for what it is at the moment. Only made it to swarm level 7 before i died. Enjoying the vibe and feel of the RSI Aurora. Using a keyboard and mouse seemed ok to me. I don't own a joystick or hotas but people seem to have issues with them so i expect that to be fixed in 0.9

There are somethings that are hard to figure out like the energy system which i am still trying to understand. Love the shields and that there are segments of it. The Vanduul start easy but by wave 6 i had big troubles getting rid of them.

The maps are a little tight i love unlimited maps because i am into freedom in games. Although that is perfectly understandable as they are not ready to release 64 bit yet and need to test the basics in a small confined environment.

Some graphical glitches and flickers here and there but then again it's pre alpha as stated. The in cockpit head / character movement could be smoother. Feels rough at times. There also should be a little internal engine rumbling sound to give a feel to it working.

Other than that. It seems pretty solid. Visuals have a very cinematic feel to them. It is Enjoyable but will be far more interesting with the multiplayer roll out and bug fixes that are coming with 0.9 and 1.0.

Also looking forward to the person who can beat wave 15. The "Elite" AI keeps getting better every 3rd wave.

Ms.Nowak won't post any constructive criticism because he doesn't have any. What baffles me is how far can some people go in lying to themselves and not accepting clear facts that they can see for themselves.

The Elephant in the Room

Well Star Citizen's dogfighting demo is out and personally I find it to be quite underwhelming. Perhaps I am too spoiled by Elite's incredible atmosphere, flight mechanics, sound effects and visceral combat, but in comparison SC's game feels like crap.

Frontier has accomplished a great game so far and I believe they are headed in the right direction with what they are doing. Anybody else feel the same way?

Scope of project being one. Brand new company being another...

blah blah blah

.....I feel like we've been over this before.

Thanks for that. Knowing how much of a fan you are, a balanced assessment IMHO.

So far it comes down to this for me:
Elite : Dangerous as soon as I got in my ship I didn't know what to do. But I felt like I was in a spaceship in space.

Arena Commander when I log in I know I am in an FPS game, and when I get out of the hangar I feel like I am in a flying vehicle in an FPS game.

Now, a good deal of that 'immersion' side of it will change as they refine things, get the double precision in and all the rest of it. It's a very early build as we all know. But there are some aspects that seem to be design choices - there are many people who like them. So if they did change later on they would have all those people upset.

I think what's happening here is just a lot of people remembering that you can't be all things to all men, no matter what your budget.

I absolutely agree!!

Perfect summary of the facts!

Its probably a good thing

SC will take the more space shooter end of the market and lovers of that
ED will take the more space sim end of the market and lovers of that

Between the two of them there will be something for everybody. Not to mention when the modders get going.

This assumes of course they'll get the cryengine working for a flight game which right now does appear to be a major hurdle.

Both FD and CIG are working on their projects for approximately the same time! So why the results are so different?

Ummmm....... Did you not read the first two sentences in what you quoted? Or do you think that more features can be crammed into the same amount of developing time?

CIG only started ramping up their production team to full levels at around the new year, when ED's alpha was being released. That was ONE of the challenges that come from being a brand new company.

I do not support your use of a double negative ;) But I do agree with your point! In either case I find it a mystery why after all this time it feels like a turret and so far away from flight.

I worry it's something to do with the nature and selection of the cryengine as others have explained.

Sorry what are you saying again? Back in October-November 2013 CIG was planning to release DFM in December 2013, so it was definitely being worked on for at least a year. And now you are saying that they were not doing anything until January 2014 when they got their production team?

AC does not have any features but single player combat in the predefined scenario just like ED Alpha 1.

We have special thread, as pointed above but CIG just started to release their first pre-alpha module for real. Games are at different stages...so they can't be compared that way. Will see later now on, I personally care only about ED, sorry SC fans :) ED have lot of stuff to fix to do, so no opening wine yet.

No. I said they only RAMPED UP their production team to what it is now near the New Year. Their entire Austin TX team moved into a new office out of a basement in January.

They haven't only been working on what you see in AC v0.8. And are you forgetting the entire part where you walk through your hangar around your different ships? I didn't know that ED had that, let alone for the alpha release!!!

Talking in general - this is a serious issue that has being plaguing SC for some time. Not all games/communities suffer from it so much. But SC has it bad.

I am so biased towards ED now, I don't even check on SC in case it gives me ammo to be critical about SC on the ED forums.

Only 35 supporters needed for the LAVECON 2014 Thuderclap btw. :)
