I'm expecting there to be issues with it. Just not as big as some people here say they are. They are suspicions because I still haven't had the opportunity to play it.

ahhh ok. got ya!. like I said a few pages back, its not all bad, but I do think the whole freelancer mouse control system is its biggest issue. It does not matter how intelligent all the under the hood flight physics are when in mouse mode it just controls everything for you and follows your mouse pointer.

If they do a complete re-design of the flight model

they will have to remove mouse mode, and add mouse-joystick emulation instead

you just cant have proper flight on a chase the cursor system...

That is one of the things that I mean. Point the cursor mode - is a disaster for a Space sim, joystick emulation - is the right way to do it. And ED followed exactly this path.

I think it is fair to compare different stages of the games' development in our case as they pass through almost exactly the same path.

ED A 1.1 - single player scenarios
ED A 2.0 - added multiplayer

AC 0.8 - Single Player
Then they are adding multiplayer towards AC 1.0.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think they already have multiplayer for a small group and they are planning to roll out to the full population by 1.0.

It's the first outing of their game, though. So comparison to Alpha 1 does seem more fitting as they've not yet had a chance to review feedback.

After playing around a little in my <3ly 300i, here is my first impressions.

THE GOOD
--The game looks gorgeous, and it also runs very well in my aging rig with med/low settings.
--Its the DFM!! I've been waiting so long for it that my face is horribly distorted by a smile all day..XD
--It works! I don't see any serious bugs or other technical problems in my computer.
--Holly smokes damage model and effects!! There is nothing more smug than flying through the debris of the ship you just destroyed!
--Heroic implementation of the 3PV. g-force effects ARE projected and the cycle button does NOT allow view hopping. All my fears of 3pv imbalance in dogfighting were properly destroyed, and I can still admire my beautiful ship and make artistic photos/timelapses/videos.

THE BAD
--I find some parts of the UI distracting, like the 3d reticles and the way ships are obscured by the targeting circles.
--Flying the ship feels a little floaty, too immediate and jumpy for my taste. I think its partly my problem though,
--Judging both your absolute and relative speed is not so easy. I think that CIG has to work on that a little.

THE UGLY
--Using the "match speed to target button" can potentially kill a lot of the skill required to dogfight competitively. I remember myself loving the feature in the old WC games, but I don't feel its a good match for SC. Far from it.
--No strafing in coupled mode. T_T
--Sound design leaves a lot to be desired imo. It can only get better, and it should. I don't feel the thrusters, I cannot ascertain my ships behavior from how it sounds and a lot of the SFX need more work.

So...thats the ambivalence part.

The certainty is that everything will become better as we move along. Its a great time to be a space sim fan!! A lot of thanks to the good folks at CIG for their hard work...keep the goodness coming guys 'n' gals..C:

I hope that at one point in the future we'll look back at this and laugh how silly some statements were...

Isn't multiplayer already available for early backers?

As far as I know they are starting from 250 people and are planning to include everyone else somewhere at AC 1.0. So until I am able to launch AC multiplayer it is Single Player for me.

Actually from earlier statements they said that the initial roll out for Multiplayer will be for 5,000 people. As the game becomes more stable they will send out further invites while the rest of the community can play the single player aspect until their invite.

*sigh

@Dante

I wish I had your relentless optimism.

Well get on their forums and give them suggestions. We are there to test the product and tell them what is working and what is not. So far in this initial build, I prefer the way ED did their flight and HUD. In ED I feel like I am actually flying a ship and it has weight and all that. The HUD is out of my way and easy to see around.

While in SC it does not yet feel like I am flying and the HUD is in my face. With future builds and suggestions all of this can be changed with good suggestions. I'll refrain from going "SC Sucks and Sky is falling" until SC iterates a few more times on their DFM. For now its still too early to tell how it will end up.

If I don't like how it turns out by end of Alpha and start of Beta, I can simply sell my package on the SC Black Market and enjoy ED.

Have you played X-Rebirth? If so, How does Arena Commander's control and handling compare to it? Despite many other gripes with Egosoft's offering, I didn't mind the 'camera in space' feel too much-though it felt more comfortable using a mouse and keyboard rather than my HOTAS.

Taking the positives, I may be the only person who actually saved money through Star Citizen :D

(regarding a Warthog)
I have been resisting so far. My old Extreme 3D may yet survive beta but it will never make if past launch. Arena Commander may tip the scales sooner...

Needless to say, it didn't.

As citizen #78472, I fear I may be waiting a long time :(

On the plus side, while fixing the bindings for the 2 big HOTAS controllers, they've now revealed how to rebind keys in arena commander using an xml file, so I may be able to get my hotas doing useful things.

We've uploaded the xml files necessary for activating the HOTAS controls here:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/media/kethqwqvlimdhr/source/Layout_hotas_x55.xml
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/media/vzyutugrxmjavr/source/Layout_hotas_warthog.xml
1 Click the correct link above for your HOTAS joystick
2 Right click the page and Save As - noting where you've saved the file e.g. C:\Hotas
3 Now, once you're in game, open the console with the [ ` ] key and type: pp_rebindkeys C:\Hotas\layout_hotas_x55 (or pp_rebindkeys C:\Hotas\layout_hotas_warthog)

I have had a very good look at arena commander and it is truly horrible aside from how it looks. There is no immersion, I cant tell if my ship is actually moving or not, there is no feeling of flying the ship at all. It just feels like a turret floating in the middle of the arena shooting at everything twitch style. Tonnes of work is needed to bring the combat anywhere close to what ED has offered us.
P.S. the control system really really sucks and if you are going to try to use a joystick forget it.. the lightest touch will spin you 180 degrees and it is an exercise in frustration.

If only everybody would do that :)

Ive been watching AC videos for the best part of this evening. The graphics look really nice, but nothing that I have seen or read thus far of the (pre)alpha gameplay has compelled me to play the game. If anything, it has confirmed to me that the production value is driving development at this time. For example, i'd rather have wireframe graphics and the core mechanics apparent, than incredible graphics and placeholder gameplay (which appears to be the case right now, at least imho).

When I first started following ED during alpha, I ordered my Hotas and bought into the premium beta THAT DAY, as the vision and style of gameplay hooked me from the get-go.

Yes, AC/SC is pre-alpha BUT first impressions DO count and early releases and game demos serve as a good indication of what to expect going forwards. This is kind of the curse of hyperbole stemming from community backing - CIG needs to keep its 'stakeholders' happy by throwing bones, when the development time could be better spent right now on evolving and honing the project before the big reveal.

I still have high hopes for SC, but it has still failed to hook me at this time.

hahahahahahaha. Bolded the best parts

@Tonberry,

Agreed, but its also a good time for them to release it as CIG does not really have a QA department. We are going to be their QA. Its a perfect time for us to shape how the game develops.

If you are not already a backer of SC, I would probably hold off until a few more iterations of the game have been released as so far it lacks quite a bit in flight mechanics compared to ED.

This is not about bugs. They'll fix that I'm sure. It's about the direction of the game. And certainly I've expressed my views on that subject, right up until it became abundantly clear the agenda was about dumbing down in order to appeal to the broadest possible audience. Hence my feedback is irrelevant because I dont represent that majority of xbox controller using space shooter fans who they are working so hard to court.

As for dumbing down, it's a subject I can offer no assistance on, other than to point out that repeatedly calling a duck an eagle, still does not make it an eagle.

That's not strictly true, they have a 7 person dedicated QA department. It's not big, but it's not exactly nothing.

:)

My best friend backed SC so we can essentially 'compare notes' whilst splitting coats. I'll get my butt round to his house and 'interrogate' the game soon enough :)

I agree entirely that community feedback is needed to drive development. I just hope it drives it the right way...
