I do not know but I would be shocked if cryengine pushes for a particular flight model. I would think it is a result of design rather than the cryengine.

OK what about the planes in BF2/3. Alright, hardly a flight sim, they were arcady, but still flew so much better than this. Was that cryengine? If so is that an indicator of the best they can get? To be honest that's what I was expecting in the first place but the flight is not even to this level.

Nope, the BF series never was on CryEngine 3... here you have a list of CE games... most of them are FPS and action adventure type games, and regrettably, none of them dealt with simulating actual speed.

OMG

On first glance it is the only flight project on the entire list. Am I reading that right?

Well, it's one reason, really... another one is that the arena right now is just a small 2D skybox with some 3D objects for show. I would imagine the ships are slowed down considerably, so they don't bump into the borders constantly.

Of course, this kills any sense of scale and motion... two things ED is simulating EXCEPTIONALLY well already.

Good point ED now really nails so well that sense of motion.

Battlefield uses the Frostbyte engine.

Here is why your and everyone else's statement "it's alpha" or "it's pre-alpha" is absolutely wrong - saying that everything great, no problems makes CIG think that everyone absolutely likes the game, flight model and this does not need to be changed. Continue this reaction and you will get the final game with the same gameplay. Now, simply answer the question - would you be satisfied to see the same gameplay in the final release?

I really don't want sc to be an elite clone...I actually am totally enjoying both forms of combat equally...it's more variety and variety is good. I even like star point Gemini 2 as that's a like true arcade...so yeah ..when the game releases I want them on thus route albeit a much more polished version

But why should the cryengine limit 3d movement of the player? as that can be overriden by an inhouse or other 3rd party system. I do not see the issue with cryengine it must surely be with design decisions.

Have you played AC and noticed it flies like a turret after a year of them working on it? Given people have been making flight games since day one, I wondering can they really be that incompetent or are we dealing with an issue of engine selection.

Battlefield uses the Frostbyte engine.

I wonder, they may have loved to have got the rights to use that engine.

I aim to play tonight but I have watched many videos and you have a point, I just think that a world rendering engine like cryengine must allow 3d player movement to be completely overriden by anouther system. I feel they explicitly wish it to be the way they created it as the average joe which most of us are not may like it that way. In a sentance they are designing it to be dumbed down for the masses...

Seriously man, wait till you try it. Then you'll clearly see what I mean for yourself. It doesn't feel like design choice, it feels like desperately struggling to capture the feeling of flight and falling way way short.

Yes I thought you may say that, but at the end of the day I am pretty sure I am right as I cannot believe they are that incompatent.

Yes, and I hope my quad core can handle it and hope it plays at all.
There were several problems with installation and then a 17 hour wait and then a connection lost and then had to go to work where I have been watching vids of it only :(

Just follow this thread... even the most die hard fanboys start to realize that CIG went back on their promises...

I read that and others and seems nearly everyone says the mouse provides much easier play. Someone suggested they may end up instancing joystick players and mouse players separately because of it...

Basically HOTASS people are not happy.

Reading it now

This kind of comment makes me laugh, given they clearly have no idea back in the day we played games like x wing with joystick, a few with keyboard, but never mouse or console controllers.

"Its a communication problem.

The game was never meant to be a simulation. It was meant to be a "Space Sim".

The term Space Sim originated from the 90s "pew pew" games, where you would be simulating a sci-fi situation like Star Wars (which was far from realistic).

That is also where all the contradiciton comes from. For CR Wing Commander and Privateer, or X-Wing vs Tie Fighter are "Space Sims" as he comes from a background of old school gaming.

For other people the "Sim" part refers to the real world, not to a fictional world. "

Classic fanboy lecturing on what they know nothing about.

...and THAT'S not "alpha" issue, it's base game concept gone wrong.

In my Arcade commander matches i couldn't even tell i was moving

in fact all i was doing was spinning

go ahead a try this to win "spin to win"

  1. Press T to target vandall
  2. Press Shift to boost?? The only way you can see your ship moving is that the METERS is going down on some target graph...
  3. Press Caps lock to enter spin to win mode
  4. start dragging mouse around the edges of the screen with auto aim while not moving
  5. keep repeating everytime a new target or the target moves out of gun range

I relate to this comment from that thread

"This, among numerous other statements about flight controls and what they are going for, got me to back this game. They promised, hell, based their complete marketing campaign on returning to real PC gaming and skill based model. None of that modern catering to the lowest common denominator, a true space sim of old for hardcore gamers.

And now they do a complete 180 and give us this?! I feel gutted. "
