Well I don't like it and hope FDEV will replace it rather sooner than later. One idea would be to use the scavenger hunt mechanic from planetary salvage missions. This would also allow to significantly reduce POIs while still being resasonable easy to find, while flying in orbital cruise you would see a message "anomaly detected" which will lead you to the POI. Or something completely different, I don't really care as long as we get rid of blue circles.

EDIT

After reading some posts I no longer support the scavenger hunt mechanic as replacement, it's still better than the current system but I would prefer a complete overhaul:

The pros:
- we would know what we get, no nasty surprises, no chance of adding a mechanic that is worse than the current one
- it's better than the blue circles
- easy to implement because it already exists in the game

The cons:
- no skill involved, just follow the carrot
- no information about the nature of a POI (could be added though)

The fact that there is no skill involved begs for a completly new mechanic. Maybe our ships could use something similar to the SRV wavescanner, please share your thoughts and ideas.

HOWEVER

Have you played Mass Effect 2? It has a scan mechanic which is very similar to what we could get using something like the wave scanner and I absolutely didn't like it. Maybe it sounds good on paper, but scanning planets in ME2 was one of the most boring gameplay elements I've ever seen.

[humour(no sarcasm)]Since FDEV only considers changes in gameplay mechanics if enough people make noise I'll ask you to keep the thread alive by participating in all kinds of off topic discussions like:

- ship transfer delays
- crime & punishment
- open vs solo
- to grief or not to grief
- what is worse, griefing, combat logging or griefing by combat logging?
- is the game dead?
- does multiplayer even exist?
- maybe there are some mysteries hidden in this thread? Help us find them!

PS

- what happened to offline mode?
- third person mode
- 5000 more fire buttons please
- undo the python nerf

PPS

- actually, please don't participate in off topic discussions or the thread will get locked. Just imagine this would be a really important topic instead

PPPS

- free rep for everyone voting for replace and posting a comment :D[/humour(no sarcasm)]

I think the POI's are different in 2.2 (getting smaller as you approach the interest) to prevent just landing & driving around blindly.

Edit - I may have been mistaken - having misinterpreted what's happening with the POI's in this post.

It's still clunky, unrealistic and doesn't allow immersive gameplay. Because there is no good way to find them they need to be all over the place, doesn't make much sense when you are exploring.

If the circles just shrank in sizes as you narrowed down the location, that'd be a big improvement. It seems to happen sometimes, but I have never found a consistent repro.

A nicer mechanic would always be welcome and your idea sounds quite good :)

edit: ninja'd, is that actually fixed in 2.2?

the logic of the blue circles was not intuitivly (that an inglish word?) understandable for me (like the SRV scanner).

usage of the scanner i learned from this Forum. for to POI System i didn't bother. voted for the Change.

So are you exploring, or just going point to point?

I voted to remove them, because the gameplay is indeed a bit wooden (better in Beta 2 though), but dont you think, this call to off topic babble is a bit misplaced?
If there are enough people, we might see a change to this, but keeping a thread alive and up front with blah is not the way to go, i think. We saw a very good beta phase so far and a lot of good and productive communication going on. Lets play in the same league.

If what's said about 2.2 is correct, then that's a huge improvement.

Additionally, making crash sites and other interesting things a bit more flashy might help.

Wrecks can be quite easily spotted in sunlight, but on the dark side it can be near impossible.

Glowing embers, or flashing distress beacons or something would help quite alot.

I have had a question about crash sites for a long time now and here would be a good place to ask.
We find dead ships at these sites, but we can scan for data etc. When our ships 'crash' they cease to exist, so are the ships at crash sites, still 'alive' to a degree?

No idea. Lol

The part about off topic discussions was a joke...

Most ridiculous thing about them is that they only appear above, what, 1500m? This was heavily opposed during the Horizons beta, but FD insisted, presumably as a way to force you into the SRV.
Replacing them with the scavenger hunt mechanic wouldn't be a bad solution actually. As long they remove that stupid height limit ... soaring across the surface looking for POI's was great fun for the few days that you could. People have to get in their SRVs to look for RNG mats that cannot be bought anyway, so the mechanic has mostly lost its purpose.

Yes, with materials, missions requiring the SRV, skimmers etc. we already need to use it anyway.

I'd like to see an improvement to the POI system similar to the USSs in 2.1 where you get an idea of what's in them in advance.

Currently looking for some stuff for level5 dirty drives, the difference in time taken between USS searching & POI searching is a little frustrating considering it's basically the same game mechanic.

Good point, POIs should definitely give us an idea on what we'll find.
