Hardware & Technical Saitek x55 rhino

I haven't got mine yet, but wouldn't it make sense to have the pitch and roll on the Y and X axis of the yoke, the Yaw on yoke-twist (instead of rudder pedals) and then have the thrust up/down/left/right on one of the hat switches on the throttle?

Would also be very interested to hear how those with the X55 currently have it set up!

At the moment I've got the lateral & vertical thrusters set up on one of the hat switches on the stick. However that's not really what I want. Ideally it should be one of the hat switches on the throttle (as you suggest) but the last time I tried to set that up, none of them were recognized by Elite Dangerous.

Slythe,

When reading through the forums on this topic I've seen other people with this problem. Someone came up with a fix/work around that seemed to work for most of the people. Which (I believe) had something to do with the USB drivers on your PC.

I do know that all my HAT switches can be set as I've tinkering with them trying to get a comfortable set up for Elite D.

Thanks, I'll look into that ASAP.

That is how I would imagine it :)

Programming the x55

Still doing extensive research into joysticks I came onto this 20 min. video and I thought it might interest the X55 owners.

It shows you some basics and tricks for programming the X55.
It is not specifically targeting Elite Dangerous, but I think it is very useful nevertheless.

This is my joystick / throttle config Im currently using. Depending on your tastes, I can imagine some would want to switch the Boost and Highest Threat buttons on the joystick part.

I have been thinking about buying a X55 for a while now but all the reports about problems make me hold back.
I know they can be resolved, but I feel a HOTAS in that price class should not have problems like this, and it should not be the customer who has to resolve them. It irritates me that Saitek would ship this HOTAS like this and it makes me lose trust in them.

So, now I am thinking about buying the Thrustmaster Warthog. I will have to spend far more than I wanted to, but I hope this product is at least a finished product that does not require the customer partaking in the production process :).

I read it has no twist axis like the X55 Rhino.
Do any of you think I will be missing that feature?
(There is no way I will be buying pedals.)

I have both the TM Warthog and Saitek X55. I prefer the x55 for space and helo sims because of the lighter stick tension. The Warthog stick tension is strong and there is a transition flat (clunk) moving through the center that you will notice (it irrritates the hell out of me) and prevents fine control (for me). You can buy or make a stick extension mod that eliminates this problem, but the HOTAS is expensive enough to begin with.

TM Warthog has no twist. Pedals are by far the better option anyway.

If you are worried about quality issues just get extra warranty from the store you buy it from, so they can replace it for you on the spot as opposed to waiting for the RMA process.
Usually stores offer that sort of service on hardware items like these.

I've been using mine for about 2 weeks now and have no issues what so ever. Had some button ghosting but ones I've plugged the controller into the USB3 ports all those issues are resolved.

As for the twisting action of the stick, I think it is personal preference, if you've been playing Elite without it you will not miss it, but I could not fly without it anymore. For me it is an essential part of the controls.

Would that not be a little risking having the cargo scoop and eject cargo options on the same switch? And the toggle settings stiff enough that you wouldn't accidentally click it back too far when withdraw the cargo scoop?

switches are auto centring, so you'll push it the same direction to retract..

Those were my thoughts exactly. I don't see what's wrong with the default set up to be honest, just assign hyperspace and supercruise to the pinky rocker on the throttle

Thanks again for the replies.

I have a question about the Throttle septup Nomadski posted.

The red button on the side is set up to reverse throttle.
That slightly worries me because I would have liked to reverse thrust by pulling the throttle stick all the way back.
I would have liked my ship to stay stationary with the throttle in the middle.
Is that setup possible?

Yes it is.
That is how mine is setup. In the options you can set throttle to "forward only" or "full range"
If you have it in full range the middle is the stand still mode. You can set a little dead zone in either X-55 software or in Elite so it is not so finicky to find the middle.

It is possible, somewhere you can set it to 'full range' though not sure if that's in the game or in the profiler software.

The red button in question is best left as boost. Again, i really cant see what's wrong with the default setup =/

Anyone have a loud click whenever yaw is used on the stick? If I yaw left over and over I only get a click on the first one. There is no further click until I yaw in the opposite direction. It is very loud, and I suspect the teeth in the grey outer ring are dodgy.

It isn't a squeek like on here: -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sgba6iihOW4&feature=youtu.be

Instead it is a loud pop. I had an X55 briefly before and it didn't have this issue. I'm wondering whether it will fix itself, or the grey ring is borked (some of the teeth seem a but, um, chewed and marked, as if they weren't maufactured quite right - it was like this straight out of the box)

I've had a click noise (not very loud) at the end of the travel but it's gone now, after using the stick a bit.

Cheers. This is quite loud. It doesn't happen if I hold the outer grey ring forcibly in place. I'll keep my eye on it. I suspect it is the outer and inner rings not fitting snuggly enough due to the ragged plastic lips on the outer one.
