So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

"You are cleared. Watch your six, Commander" - Mars High flight controller, just now

I haven't heard this before. Has anyone?

/tinfoil

wasnt that in one of the origianl elite games, mars high is also wehre alien stuff is hidden, where hasley was treated, where the thargoids are stored, where salome learnt secrets and well its an interesting place in the universe.

Left it for an hour. Came back to find the PC locked up and a low memory warning showing.
Rebooted and I'm still showing 5 days.

Mine crashed out too, but when rebooted it seemed to then get it's act together and I was on within 30 mins.

Quite. I was hoping to spot something of interest. However there's so much new stuff in sol [tourist beacons et al] that I did not have time to look properly this eve, so left it for the day in order to find the ship's graveyard. No luck yet, though.

I'm not on the fastest cable connection in the world, but I'm not getting any sustained download rates. It's all spikes, averaging between 0.1 and 0.2 MB/s.
Guess I'm not going to be playing tonight.

Anyone have any idea of the download size?

I've heard it. Female voice? Not limited to Mars High.

It's about 10 Gig.

Funny thing this is first time it worked for me, 20 mins.

Have you tried powering your router and modem and disable/enable your adapter,, that sort of stuff?

Route through a proxy?

Change your dns servers?

Alternate between their regular and alternate download after each of the above changes?

Checked the FAQ on FDEV support pages?

It's really frustrating, it took me three days a couple of updates back.

Yeah, a Southern belle.

I don't spend much time in FedSpace.

Looks like ship's graveyard is a bust, assuming it isn't 'hidden'. no tourist beacon in system either.

*MY DC JUST TRIED TO KILL ME!* Well, that's new!

Just rebooted router and modem after the download aborted.
Default download location won't connect but I'm getting a sustained 0.5MB/s (which is the max I ever get here) on the alternate.
Still means a 7hr download prediction, but at least it's going as fast as it can.

I wish FDev started upgrades early enough that I could launch the download before I go to work

It could be like other content and come between 2.2 and 2.3 in a future mini patch. Letsk keep reporting anything related though, the cannon peeps are starting to find some interesting things

No obvious sign of the Ship's Graveyard... /sadface

That was not going to happen with this update, later down the road.

I booted up my system around 630PM Eastern US time and was updated about 10 minutes later. I don't think it borrowed any files from the beta version I had, but maybe.

So my 2.2 download is currently reporting 13 hours to complete.

I officially hate you all.

Update:
Make that 2 days

Dang that's slow, sorry to hear it. I was done in about 3 minutes using Steam and google fiber. One of the few times I actually appreciate having that much speed, most of the time 1Gpbs is overkill.

You I hate more than anybody! ;)

Currently reporting 5h remaining.
Interestingly, the data rate occasionally exceeds the limits of my connection capabilities. I'm assuming that FDev are compressing files and the data rate is calculated post-decompression.

Sadly my connection is provided by the apartment complex I live in.
Pros: Free
Cons: 0.5MB/s maximum

That's strange. You aren't using WiFi by any chance? That is a terrible thing to use for gaming.

I get 6.5Mb/s reported when syncing files for upgrades, and I'm not entirely certain all of that is downloading but might be file verification as well which can add to speed since I have all of my games on SSDs. Beats me, all games I update are fast and I only have the mid-tier Verizon FiOS package.

I am using wifi, but that's not the bottleneck.
I downloaded a 42GB game to my xbox (some space FPS, I forget the name) and that was on a wired connection. Still maxed out at 0.5MB/s and took about 30 hours.

WiFi is a definite problem even without the download speed, you really do not want to use WiFi for gaming just for the best connection in general - there are so many inherent issues with wireless aside from just interference but if a game is using UDP there will be loss causing warping and with TCP you'll get error correction if data out of order.

If it works for you and you are happy with it - can't say anything about that, but WiFi is definitely no bueno for gaming. It's perfectly fine/adequate for general browsing and some downloading but it can cause a lot of retries and add download time just due to data corruption/errors/out of order packets - but not as big of an issue for downloading as it is for gaming itself.

It works well enough for PvE. If I ever decide to go PvP then I'll string cables across my apartment, since watching other cmdrs in SC can get very jerky.

Finally got mine downloaded after 10 hours, time to go explorin

'grats :)

4 hours left here.
Might set my alarm for 5am and get some pre-work gaming in.
I'm 30kLY out, on my way back from the 'eastern' galactic rim - gonna look at some geysers on my way home.

its been 2 and half pages of download updates. Can you move non alien science to another thread? Only get 15 minute breaks and dont want to dig through topics unrelated to the thread.
