2.2 Why introduce restricted or niche features that will have low overall use?

The main "problem" with the fighters may be that the big ships can defend themself so well that there is no need for the fighters help. The smaller ships would benefit from a fighters help, but they can not carry one. In this case the usage of a fighter is driven ad absurdum. -.-

2.2 Passenger Missions:

I guess technically this is not a feature, but content, however it is featured content. Another niche addition that that most people may try a few times before giving up on it, except for dedicated travel agents. Some of the first missions I saw that were worth 3-4 million for a 1300 Lyrs journey, presumably you will then want to go back to your turf afterwards which is a return journey of another 1300 Lyrs. This is not taking into account that you will be stacking missions, i.e. that means detours on the way.

I guess you've not done too many passenger missions, or the few I've done have been exceptionally lucrative. I had one 2M cr payout for going 30ly to deliver a medic. Ok I had to pick up some medicine on the way, but that wasn't the hardest side mission.

I did see one mission for 11M cr, but it did involve a trip to Colonia and I'm not quite ready to spend 3 weeks doing the 40Kly round trip again just yet :)

So most people are concerned whether a sentence early in the OP was a question, rhetorical question or a statement. Okay. Welcome to the OCD thread.

Well, you started it, so thank you for the welcome. Seriously, though, you have your opinion of the features introduced with 2.2 and that's fine, you're welcome to it and welcome to state it. As you could probably surmise, though, there are a few folks with differing opinions and they are likely to express that disagreement. I'm one of them and therefore doing so as politely as possible. That I chose to do so by indulging in a little rhetorical analysis of your OP instead of simply saying "I disagree" seems to me to be a little more respectful of your opinion (since it requires me to understand it) than to simply say some variant of "you're wrong"

I agree with the OP. Since I don't use transport/mining ships, they should be removed from the game. Same with Power Play. Why waste so many resources maintaining that?

Burst Lasers, missiles/torpedoes, cannons, reflective or reactive armor. Waste of my time to have them on the outfitting screen.

And I'm an Admiral in the Fed navy. Please remove the Fed minor factions since I no longer need to rank up. Those missions are a waste of resources.

Not really, and not sure there's any need for OCD comments. I merely disagree that these are niche items, and think it rather sweeping of you to say so. I was hoping to prompt some interesting debate by pithily disagreeing, I'll try harder...

Given the FSD boost option via Neutron stars, great distances are now easier traversed (much easier). Accordingly low-count high-pay passenger missions seem to me very attractive. I've experimented with FSD boost in an un-modified Asp that could have passengers and made 117ly jumps. There's huge neutron fields all around, so a quick route to Jaques is definitely possible - though I confess I've not mapped it specifically, I hope there is one back from Sag A where I am near right now. This opens up big pay and the big ships and then with big ships come fighters. I'm going to need fighters because I'm not that good at fighting.

Ship transfer however doesn't remotely interest me, but I gather there are folks interested (didn't loads of people recently vote on the timing of this?).

Loving passengers, will do passenger missions more than regular ones. Fighters - certainly will try to get them as soon as possible, not having any big ships yet. Ship transfer is awesome, allows me to not to worry to buy new ships instead of selling old ones.

Next time please don't present your own opinion as general one.

There's a patch on the way, not sure when, today, 3PM BST?

Anyway it reduces ship transfer time / cost by 50%, lovely

My view of elite is that you must plan ahead, you want fighters? plan ahead, save up for a ship that supports them, don't forget rebuy!

You wanna head to somewhere 22,000LY from where you are right now? plan ahead, you ain't gonna do it over a few hours.

====

Most complaints are about the time it takes, just plan ahead, dont rush

If there is a patch that lowers cost and time I would ask why now? The Beta forum was filled with complaints about cost and time from the start. Why have a Beta test/forum and ask your users to give you feedback if you either ignore it or you follow the advise of the minority of players that love high cost and long delivery times?

Perfect timing? Perfect you say? But how can anyone know the timing is perfect? If no one is aboard a ship during transfer does its internal clock even work!?!?

:p

And the sound of one hand clapping is "cl" - the other one makes the "ap" :) Unless the one-handed clap ends up upside somebodies ear, in which case you can ask the recipient what it sounds like :)

OP, this will happen more and more in the future.

People have said, that ED is too shallow, has too few options to play it in different ways. FD does add these options now and will do so in the future. Inevitably, some of the additions will be things you are not interested in. Others may differ.

Rergarding restricted modules: l think they are a brilliant addition to the game and we need more of them, not less! They help to define and sharpen the charakter of the ships, make them more unique and interesting - able to give us an incentive to try them out.
Remember the X-series, where Argon ships could outfit different weapons than Split ships and the SWG was a great reason to buy the Paranid 'Perseus' (and "grind" reputation with them just for this reason)? This was and is a great driving factor to proceed in the game! ED does well in "mimiking" this (in its own and unique way)!
We have some restricted modules already: Enhanced class 1/2 thrusters for the small ships, luxury modules for passenger ships ('first class' should be limited to them, too!) and now SLFs. I hope, there is more to come in the future!

Because this won't be 'niche features' for some, but broaden and vary the way to play for all of us!

In terms of niche value...2.2 caters fer those with, while those without face even more grind. This update is all but meaningless in that respect...to those of us with one small ship, and just a few credits. If there are those who can't see the issues, then prove me wrong and do a wipe and start from scratch in the current game.

Conclusion:

It would be nice if less niche/restrictive features are added in future, and features that have been added are less prohibitive to use.

I see your point, but at the same time these restrictions are somewhat of a motivator to set your goals and try to achieve them (i.e. get a ship that is capable of transporting fighters). And before anyone jumps in with "BUT IT'S MOAR GRIND!" - well, that's a perfectly valid opinion, but then again mine is that it's the player that creates grind, not the game. The game only allows for it, so to me it's not an argument.

But that's just my peronal opinion :)

My general premise is that these features will not see as much use as they could of because of restrictions and prohibitive cost making them being used less frequently. The Passenger missions are niche because I'm pretty sure after the novelty has worn off not many people will do them for reasons I described. But note I did put a suggestion at the end of each feature to say how they could be improved for more general and frequent consumption.

I guess "niche" is defined as "anything I personally don't want to use"?

These are hardly niche features. That's all I can think of to say here.

Quite.

There are 4 updates in a season. each with a bunch of things, aimed at different players.

People play the game in many different ways.

I'm not going to be disappointed if even 75% of an update is not relevant to me, or even if a release goes by me without anything of interest, because it broadens the game and is of interest to others. I know that *somewhere* in the 20 quid I paid for four updates, there will be way more than £20 of joy in there for me somewhere, when my turn comes around.

Currently *extremely* happy with this update, despite never planning to install a fighter bay.

He's disagreeing with the assumptions behind that statement. As do I.

Although...

Barely anyone goes exploring on distant planets, so they should not have bothered putting in alien ruins.
That many alien ruins might not be found is also an enormous waste. If they are going to be in the game, FD should just tell us where they all are straight away.
There's relatively few neutron stars, and none central to a major system, so that's niche content and a waste of effort, too.
Not many people carry a wake scanner, so Engineer upgrades for that are niche and should not have had Dev time, either.
Most people don't PP, so adding a new faction was a waste of time.

[hehe]

It does seem odd to add in lots of little things that nobody wants over lots of fixes and QoL features that we can all pretty much agree we want. I really wish they'd spent the last 5 years on consistency and depth rather than throwing out lots of RNG missions and "bits" for us to play around with.

When are they going to step up and make the game along their own universe. Stick to the lore, that's what a sci-fi game needs - what none of us are looking for is "Eastenders in Space" we want Elite lore specific content that makes sense and stuff put in the game that isn't so wrong that it instantly needs a 50% fix to it. When are we going to see some depth to the universe and some life.

When is the game going to feel like it isn't "spawning around me"
