The balance was wrong then..... and it was wrong in 2.1 imo - for different reasons.
in 1.0 imo the balance was perfect for the starting ships, there is NOTHING wrong with it taking 50hrs play time imo to work your way through the sidewinder/eagle/hauler/adder/cobra/T6 ships imo.
the problem was it just did not scale well... you kind of had to trade to make any money and with the launch levels and costs of maintaining the larger ships then no one could ever have afforded a cutter for instance.
however now its too much the other way imo - 2.1 was even worse
if i steal 2 kills from police in a RES or do 1 skimmer kill mission or power down generator mission i can go straight from E rated sidey to a cobra and then in a few hrs get to a vulture and beyond.... however once you get to said vulture, then the game is balance quite well imo in 2.2. (forgetting that delivery missions are currently bugged I am assuming they will be fixed)
so i would say 1.0 Elite dangerous was balanced well for ships up to and including the cobra
2.2 Elite dangerous is generally balanced quite well imo for ships Vulture and beyond.
the trick is whether FD can somehow balance the game to keep the cheaper ships relavent and not something we just fly for fun, but no actual in game logical reason to exist, whilst still making the big expensive ships possible to achieve. (for role play, who would honestly risk their meat suit in an eagle if they had access to a vulture???)
Its not that i think there is a right and wrong play style..... but ED back in the day was marketed as a game to have a functional and believable economy... imo no believable economy is based around the richest people in the universe making their money as manure haulers.... and no believable economy would have a player earning enough money from the worse flyable ship in the game to something super capable in minutes
(in ED a jump from a sidewinder to a cobra is like the modern day jump from a motorboat to a luxury speed boat imo - and the anaconda is the air craft carrier)
I welcome anyone to disagree and counter my thoughts... but please try to do it without resorting to insults and flaming
