Basic rights are guaranteed by law in many places, yet there are always people who are able to obtain longer and more comprehensive guarantees than others. It doesn't matter whether an aristocracy is hereditary, economic or even meritorious, genuine power is always concentrated in the hands of a few.
Yuh huh, but having those basic rights is still far more preferable to most people, I would posit, than being arbitrarily tortured or murdered or worked to death.
That's true, but I'm not talking about where the power is concentrated, I'm talking about the basic terms of life in these societies. You can't excuse away the willful barbarity of the Empire because of some basic similarities. There are going to be political elite in just about any human society, but the expectations and restrictions put on them are what really make the difference.
Didn't you say she was naive? I fully agree, which is why she'll never have any real power, certainly not in the Empire.
Naivety can be wiped with experience and proper advisers, being a dictator in a whats looking towards a totalitarian government can't be helped.. only snuffed out before it gains more traction.
If Aisling gains power there would be no slavery. solving that side of the arguement
I can't agree with empire's caste system so I will always lean towards the feds. Plus when the @#$% hits the fan with an alien war I don't think the empire has the muscle or the cajones to do much. Just look at those ships... those are pretty boy toys, not mean lean warhips 
I'm there now, fighting for the Feds, though I'm having a hard go of it; twice my game has crashed in the combat zone. Verrry frustrated right now.
The Empire are the ones that were murdering Barnacles for Meta Alloys and they wanted to keep the Meta Alloys for themselves. Not to mention the Empire's warmongering lately and their refusal to follow the treaty of London. The Federation are the only ones here who will preserve our access to alien crash sites while the Empire would blockade all of them if they could.
This was the one system I hoped the Powers would not dip their toes into.
I can't support the Federation because one of their guys looks like the Terminator (there, I finally said it ) and their strong arm tactics in trying to control everything irks me. i.e. Parking a Battlecruiser over Palin.
The Empire isn't much better unfortunately, especially morally wise. The Alliance kinda never features.
I would have preferred it if this had been either for the Ant Hill Mob or the Federation because, as an independant, I always root for the little guy. It is unfortunate that the Empire has been slapped over the contra part.
If either power takes hold over the system I will do my utmost to get them outed again. Why can they just not leave it alone?
The Feds already have Sothis, haven't they got better things to do? (like haul poop?)
