Loool, the irony in this post is hilarious. You say that as if 20 hours is actually a small amount of time to spend on a game... looooooool
True dat. The discrepancey between ships & rng mods is HUGE.If you want to have wing fights with other players that enjoy pvp you will need to upgrade your mods. The difference between an A rated ship and a engineer ship is just to vast. Shield generator, shield boosters, Weapons, power distributor, power plant, drives, FSD. The more you upgrade the more useful you will be in a wing fight.
are you serious?
ED, like other long burners, like WOW or EVE 20hrs is nothing.
I was 25hrs before i got out of my sidewinder!!!
if you want to get to quad elite (not a goal for everyone) you will be measuring your time in the 1000s of hrs. I am 1000 hrs in since Sept 2014 and my highest rank is Dangerous. I could have grinded and be quad elite by now i guess.... but i do my best not to do that.

It is true that things is different, a nuke can kill allot more people faster than a hunting gun but when it comes to different variants of guns it is as much the shooters expertise that gets the 'shooting' done.
All games of today are subject to the 'gear' disease. Everthing is in 'tiers' and 'levels' - better loot is the one thing that drives players. In the end this just makes the gap between players too huge to be able to interact. Not an easy fix though... :|
It is problem from outside world PvP. If you are came to ED to measure something with other players form other countries...there are better suited games for that. However, if you up to contextual in-game PvP, this can work - but needs improvements which have been pointed out by both FD devs and players (karma system, etc.).And here is the thing..... imo outside of CQC, imo ED is a pretty rubbish PvP game..... or certainly it is if you want unscripted but BALANCED PvP.
ED is designed around asymmetric ships and ship builds and therefore, unless you contrive it to be or do the meta flavour of the month build, the PvP is always going to be unbalanced imo.
whether this is a problem or not is down to interpretation.

Depends how you define 'grind', the OP has their definition and that is not necessarily in accord with others but to claim it isn't present is burying your head in the sand tbh. My advice is to be aware that you can get caught into a 'grind trap' in the pursuit of goals and objectives and you are advised to spot and avoid that type of behaviour.
Say for example you want to unlock Prof Palin Engineer but can't face the prospect of doing a 10k LY journey and have no real interest in exploring what are your options:
1. Don't do it <-- miss out
2. Learn to love exploring <-- can't be forced on a player
3. Just tolerate it and get it done, maybe you'll like it maybe you won't <-- grind
OP isn't wrong but has over simplified the issue imho.
I still can't play E: D for longer than one or two weeks in a row ( and haven't recovered from the last play session 6 month ago).
In my view, most of Elites activities are nothing more than excessive grinds, with not enough activity options to switch between so it does feel less so to me. Sad, but that's the way it feels to me.
To be completely honest I came to realize over time that people complaining about grind are horribly missinformed.
Especialy before 2.2, you could reach bilions of credits, max ranks with fed / empire, in under a month if you were dedicated.
And don't get me started on engineers, last month I unlocked all engineers and upgraded 11 ships fully to max rank on all modules / weapons in just a bit over 3 weeks.
So less QQ more PEW PEW
