Astronomy / Space What real icy rings look like

One thing FD is doing horribly wrong about rings - particle size. In game we have something like asteroids, while in reality it's more of a mass of small rocks that barely reach 1m in diameter. However, it's all in the name of gameplay and I totally accept it, and enjoy it. Not sure I'd be interested in flying in basically a cloud of dust and pebbles :D

I thought there was a great variety in the size of the objects, ranging from basically small planetoids that cast long shadows over the rings to fine atomic dust. They also are missing that funky cloudy formation at the edge.

Remember also that in the real universe if you went out to our own asteroid belt and parked near an asteroid chances are, you would not even be able to see another asteroid since in reality, they are pretty well spread out, extremely thinly placed and FD does not want us to spend days travelling between individual rocks.

This applies to an asteroid belt that divides our system. Rings around gas giants are pretty dense :)

yeah, I was watching a video from Obsidian Ant about Infinity: Battlescape and it looked like the rings were mostly dust and small sized rocks with the occasional large boulder thrown in for flavor. I'm kind of on the ropes about it, though. I like the planetary rings how they are, but it would be really cool to be able to fly through a dust layer, as well as make amazing screen captures. It could also have made asteroid belt mining a thing as well.

Repped for accuracy and the amazing Yotsuba avatar.
