Alien archeology and other mysteries: Thread 9 - The Canonn

Oh, another uncreative and boring engineer CG to further the story? I totally didn't joke about this last week at the ruins...

This is getting depressing. Instead of providing actual clues through the site itself they have to fall back on the crutch of CGs and Galnet. Disappointing, but pretty much exactly what I expected.

Your Callsign suits your perfectly. Point being the devs probably mapped out the mystery content for this patch with a lot of thought. There probably are clues at the site as to what is next and they've been watching this thread. They've noticed we aren't getting closer and so this is their way of stopping us from stalling out. This also gives us two weeks to figure it out for ourselves so I'd rather we kept focus on trying to solve things than complaining when FD is just giving us a helping hand.

I'm inclined to believe this about the devs and their interest in giving us a bump. I'd be willing to bet that they created the clues for finding the 2nd crash site as well for the very same purposes. The galaxy is ginormous plus we're at a disadvantage with the current planetary scanning mechanic we've got so finding something like this on our own, shy of outside help, is damn near impossible.

Another reason for the CG might be because there is something to discover at the ruins but we're barking up the wrong tree - or there might have been clues on how to discover something at the ruins in "the way we were supposed to find it". The CG might be a little nudge in the right direction.

It might also not be anything of the above.

I think half the content has been skipped. Don't think we was supposed to find this site this quick or the way it was (watching a promo vid) but by in game clues and other things we have just bypassed.

It's possible the ruins don't actually do anything. The odds and ends that light up etc are just embelishments to make an 'alien' site look a little more er, 'alien'
The ruins maybe are just something to stop and look at on a longer journey but as we are here already the next step (ie CG) needs to be launcehed sooner. It was probably always planed, just not for this early originally?

I hope you are right, but I don't know... Frontiers approach to mysteries has either been hiding stuff in sound or needle-in-a-haystack.
It's clear that the intelligence of the community as a whole is far beyond any single designer there.

Like I said, I made multiple half-jokes about it while at the ruins last week. I'd hoped FD would actually put some effort into this, but no. I don't really have any respect left for them left, at this point. It really doesn't look like they care at all about an actual mystery; just drip-feeding content through simple clues gained from boring, relog-fest CGs.

Many of Frontiers teams are really great, so I still have respect for them. The sound team(probably the Frontiers strongest team), the art team, the programming team, the design team has had some ups and downs, but more or less has had good success. It's just the team that puts content(stuff for us to do) that is somewhat lackluster, and that may be because they don't have a whole lot of tools either.

I sure as hell hope you're not being serious here, or maybe I just misread your post.

Partly serious, especially following his criticism of the content building team. His actions short cut at least two weeks of player activity, and I doubt that was a minute's work for FDev to build.
You could lay the blame on FDev for including gameplay footage of the site, but hey, I'm only being "partly serious".

Personally I think xDeath should shoulder a fair portion of the salt that's being dropped on FDev & the CG...

Why? If anything, he's helped to speed up what would've been a long, drawn-out CG-fest, by a significant amount, using his wits and a few tools. It's not his fault Frontier didn't have anything more creative than a CG in store.

I have to agree with this. It's not fair to lay blame of FDs poor gameplay design at the feet of someone who singlehandedly advanced the story.
To be honest I hope this forces FD to reconsider burying the fun parts of this mystery under yet another spreadsheet activity.
Advancing the story by numbers instead of adventure.

@Storris: thanks for claryfying. I get your point a bit better now.

This will be all the more easy once we can get out of our ships. The only other way would be to put manipulator arms on all the ships and SRVs. That way you could more than scan, shoot, or listen.

I think the lack of tools and the lack of puzzle options are what is doing it.

Right now all the puzzles have been forced outside of the game.

The first thing that is needed is a complete suite of sciences and exploration modules.
Second thing that is needed is the ability to create save and send notes/emails inside of the game.
Third needs to be access to the forums inside of the game. Tools can be created for the forum that can do all kinds of things to make the game more immersive. They can just create an in game skin that makes it look like another UI. Heck throw it into Galnet.

That would be a quicker fix than the space legs will take. They just need to create puzzles that are both compelling and rely solely on the tools inside the game.

Or, we can still do something at the site and the outcome of the CG will be "only" some ship upgrade to be better prepped, because they are coming. Well, I hope this is the case.

Or there will be five CG's for every data pattern and another six for each collectable item. Worst case scenario - big bucket full of ice cold water for those on site investigating, trying things and theories.

Some comment/hint on this from FDEV will be greatly appreciated.

Scientists: Booooh FD! We want riddles to solve the mystery!
Non-scientists: Booooh FD! We feel left behind, we don't like riddles abd want to contribute as well!
FD tries to get everyone on board. Is this so bad?

Can we get back to the science part please?

They're not giving out more hints, and I can see why now.

The 'end-game or bust' attitude on display here doesn't gel with the adventure seeking rationale accompanying it.

Adventure isn't only to be found in the next chapter. A large part of any adventure is in finding and solving the clues, as well as the story arcs that they intersect. Having the objective gifted to us in this way has bypassed a large part of that adventure.

And love 'em or hate 'em the inevitable CGs play a massive part in player engagement, and in developing the story you're so keen on advancing; "Huzzah for the CG" I hear you shout.

^ This.

I already did a rough check, I've been on the site and listened to the morse:
if your ship is present, the UAs on the site scan it, and then they draw the ship as usual.

If you go there in your SRV, leaving the ship far away so that the UAs do not scan it (> 1000 mt), I still don't know, I forgot to check this particular situation.
But I suspect they will morse the system as usual.
If someone wants to do that recording for me, I'll check it. But, please, turn off the music, and put the Debug Cam as closer as you can to the working UA, or the morse will be hard to decode.

However, I do not think something new will happen.

Your wish is my command. The ship was parked about 1.5km out, ran in solo mode, wave scanner on the SRV turned off, right up next to the live UA making racket. Recorded 4 minutes. Uploaded both raw and one amplified with 18dB gain.
