Because there isn't. It's leftover geometry from creating the beacons that rotates with it. They didn't intend for part of the puzzle to be solved by clipping the debug cam through the ground people...

Probably not even leftover.

More likely just objects to attach audio sources to, so you get a nice 3D spatial effect as it rotates.

You know, How much testing have we done with the ancient orb? Its referenced as mechanical in it's info (and even states "no one has found a use yet") What if its a trigger or something for parts of the ruin? In a sense a lot of the other objects seem to be either just parts or Misc and yet the ball seems to be different.
We also have no reliable way of "placing" objects in elite either gravity or movement can mess with accuracy, But what is easy to move? A orb, it rolls, can be pushed, stopped and moved into place as such(with a bit of tedium i bet) and from personally trying to other relics into the "gaps" of the parts lying around I had trouble, yet the orb was a lot easier to try and move.

Could be that we need to get it somewhere on the site? possibly with the others too?

Consider that we have a found a possible light path from the large "landing pad" to the small with a raised section blocking that path. An object, like the orb, placed on top of the blocking ramp, could be what is needed to get the light on track again!
But, placing objects is very clunky and awkward. I'm heading back out there again, it won't hurt to try stuff like this.

Has anybody noticed whether or not these UA's at Crash Site 2 are facing a particular direction? Earlier they were facing one direction horizontally, and not they're facing mostly up. Is it possible these things are homing beacons or something?

OK CMDRS, IT'S OFFICIAL:

I've been on Crash Site 2, parked my ship >1Km away, sent it away, went on the site with my SRV, and listened to the morse of both UAs there singing.

THEM BOTH ARE MORSEING HIP 17862 6 C A, AS EXPECTED.

System + exact planet name.

Case closed.

Next please. :D

They're transmitters I bet. Homing beacons. Where are they pointing to? I noticed the three at this solo site I'm at are uniformly facing up at something.

Im at work right now but ill run it as soon as i get home.

If they face up is just a spawning glitch that put them standing.
They always point to Merope, in space. On the ground they try to.
It's always been like this, and these UA are not different.

Someone already scooped them and checked it.

Morsing coordinates to be picked up by their mommy (alien ship)?

What happens with the UA's from the original crash site? Or were there none?

No UAs in the first site. Only here.

There is an entire Page about the Unknown Artifacts on the front page, we've spent months on them.
If not disturbed, they point to Merope and transmit their location in MORSE.

If a ship is close, they scan it, then they make a drawing of it using MORSE.

Check the FP for details ;)

Gotcha.

I brought one up off the crash and went to Merope. Jettisoned it a good ways out from the star. It scanned me. It was pointing directly at the star. I dinked it to force it to move. It re-rotated back towards the star. Class B Blue-White star.

I wonder what would happen if I face-planted the star and jettisoned this UA into it.

Thanks to the CG I'm wandering around the ruins again, this time in daylight. It's given me the chance to double check something I thought I saw in the data tower's glowing prism. If you look closely while it spins, there seems to be a dodecahedron-shaped void/set of faults in the crystal inside the prism, which contains a sphere shape. It's not easy to see in a still, but it's the dark green shapes inside the glowing blue-green prism. (it's a lot more easy to see when you're looking at the moving original).

Dropping the dodecahedron at the top of one of the pyramids just saw it roll down the hill, even though all four towers were up.

Just a little follow up on my previous post.
If you use the images on the bases of the monoliths/beacons as a template on the relic pattern you recive somthing like this as a result:
A1127104AA0C786E63F83EBA5D7A2954094F91B0

I haven't been able to make sense of the binary but I have noticed that the large triangles when overlaid on top of the relic pattern (as you've done), give triangles with 3, 6 and 8 active triangles within them.

Triangles with 3, 6 and 8 crop up elsewhere, on the map:
BfMlRgD.jpg
4s1vOq6.jpg

The missing 10 triangle on the map would be from a pattern where the entire large triangle is lit. There's no state on the obelisks where this happens though.

Using the outer triangles bitwise AND against the relic gives the follow which I feel may be a dead-end:
Base 1: 111 (7) / 111 (7)
or 111111 (63)
Base 2: 101 (5) / 011 (3)
or 101011 (43) or 011101 (29)
Base 3: 001 (1) / 101 (5)
or 001101 (13) or 101001 (41)
Base 4: 111 (7) / 111 (7)
or 111111 (63)

Haven't had the change to apply the same to the 3x obelisk active/inactive patterns yet to see if anything similar happens.

Just been looking around the ancient ruins and a lot of the structures look like sluice gates as though there is some sort of liquid channelled around. There are also patches that look darker as though they are damp and all the relics are sitting on what could be the remnants of liquid under the odd brown rocks that you can destroy.

Why can you shoot the rocks round the relics but not the ones at the base of the towers that come out the ground (other than to make the relics easier to scoop)?

Do you really think it wasn't done already? :D
Into a black hole as well.

EVERYTHING was tried with the UA. And when I say, I mean it :D

Thanks for your effort CMDR!
