All things Frontier Developments at E3 2014!

I just finished watching this after I posted it. The first part is similar to the previous demonstration but wait for the Orbis Station bit, this time they fly around the outside and DB talks about how the planet positions in that system have changed while they've been demonstrating it at E3.

He also says "we are on track for a commercial release at the end of the year"

How do you think they're going to get it released by the end of the year?

That means it has to be feature complete by the end of the summer/early fall, with the fall/winter for the standard betas to come in and stress test.

Really hard to believe considering how many features still have to go in, we'd be getting major updates every two weeks or something.

I just quoted what DB said. Myself, I've always curbed my enthusiasm for release dates quite dramatically. Frontier say this year. I add on a year. That's how I maintain my happy positive disposition around here.

I guess because development isn't a linear thing. Quite often it looks like "nothing" is happening and then suddenly a lot of separate modules gets finished around the same time and the game suddenly takes a big leap. Especially since a lot of these features might work by feeding in to each other, which means they need to be put in at the same time for them to work as intended.

Or not...we'll see I guess. :p

I'm pretty sure we will get a release this year anyway, even if that release might be the "gamma stage". Since there is no difference in price between "full release" and gamma they could always say it's pretty much the same thing. ;)

The question is how many of these 'missing' features do they need to throw at the backers for external testing? We really don't know what is in the current FD build at the moment. Certainly more than the current PB build and probably beyond even the E3 build that we've seen videos of.

The way I see it, is that we're mainly being used as a smaller scale stress test and a way of testing how it works out in the 'wild' with a wide range of different set ups

The problem is not about releasing the gamma or retail this year (gamma has been stated as feature complete btw, with no player stats reset unless something goes horribly wrong). The problem is the percentage of the feature set for the retail game as viewed in the DDA that can be implemented, balanced and polished until the game releases. Remember, the retail game as per KS was to be released this last March I think.

I would be far happier with FD coming out and saying that it will launch when its ready, instead of going for a 2014 launch with a mere shell of the current planned feature set and a lot of things that were obviously planned for release being converted to DLC/expansion content.

Of course, at this point we are just projecting/speculating. Lets see what the good folks at FD have in store for us.

I just watched the GameTrailers version of the E3 demo. That planetary system is just gorgeous, an earth like moon orbiting a vast gas giant with another moon in the background. I hadn't even thought about seeing such things. Just imagine what the sky would look like on the surface of that moon.

Looks like Devs (and hopefuly Kerrash also) are back from E3

Just think, if all goes well, in a couple of years you won't have to imagine. You'll be able to go and see.

And while you're there, you can dig a hole and stuff it full of illegal contraband, shoot some of the wildlife, and abandon that whiny princess you rescued... because you don't care how many credits you've been offered for her safe return, if you have to spend another minute sharing your Sidewinder cockpit with her you'll space yourself.

Man, Star Wars would've ended a lot differently if I were in it.

Yeah, this video is great, we can look longer at the orbis in all its glory too. Deadendthrills sure will make awesome shots. The game should deserve some kind of timelapse mode, just for the educational or the bliss for our eyeballs.

Just came out the Newsletter #27 with a lot of information about the E3, but what surprised me most was the Peek of the Week, I want to fill it with goods :D
