Noob in the Black

Hiya. Despite always fitting my ships with an ADS for a few extra random credits in my travels around the bubble, I'd never tried my hand at exploring - hadn't even been more than a few hundred LYs from the starter systems. So yesterday I re-bought an AspX (sold my old one to outfit my Python when I acquired it), threw the Python's L4 FSD in it and set off to see what all the fuss is about Colonia. Currently about 4K LYs from home and it's been interesting enough so far, but have a couple of noob questions:

1. Exploration data. I know you need to be X LYs from the system to sell the data, but is there any change/increase in value the further away you get? Just wondering if it's smarter to sell off at the "pitstop" stations on the way out, or to hoard it. On the trip back I was probably going to keep it all for rep/rank investment when I get back to the bubble, any suggestions on effective or smart ways to do this?

2. Tagging systems. Basically, if I scan a system and an individual body doesn't have a "First Discovered By" tag against it, that's mine for the taking if I want to DSS it right? I know I don't get it until I hand in the scan, but wanted to be sure I'm not wasting too much time. Also, if I pick up a water world or ELF (or anything interesting) on the initial scan, is there any advantage to detailed scanning if it's already tagged, or is there no bonus to be gained there? Or do you HAVE to DSS it to confirm what it is and get the corresponding payout?

While it's nice to be doing this as a change of pace from pew-pew, I'm definitely in it to a fair degree for credits and exploration rank (currently low-level Pathfinder) so any advice would be welcome. It's been pretty smooth sailing so far, so here's to another 18k of the same... :D

P.S. In case anyone cares, approximate loadout is https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/asp...0i40v62f.Iw18WQ==.Aw18WQ==.?bn=Long Range Asp . With the upgraded FSD I get a shade over 42 LYs per jump.

Welcome to fold :)

To try and answer some of your questions (I can't answer everything though, as I don't know :/)

1) Exploration data does not change value with distance, so hoarding or selling off on pitstops will yield the same value. Rep will the local faction of a station will come with selling the data. The rank bit I have no clue :(

2) There is always the chance that someone already scanned the body when you come across it untagged, and then they sell the data before you do - in which case they get the tag, not you. Relatively unlikely, but possible.
No bonus is due if a body is already tagged - ELW's and TC WW/HMC's still pay decent imo, the bonus is...well, a bonus.
and no....you don't HAVE to DSS to get the tag, you can do that with level 2 - process is the same; you must target the body and wait for the deep scan to finish - if you have a DSS on board, it's a level 3, if you don't it's level 2. Level 3 (ie you have a DSS on board) will yield extra info - I'm not clear on what since nearly all my scans are indeed level 3. But it is possible to NOT have a DSS and thus save a slot, and still get tags/bonus; you just won't get paid as much.

Edit:
Looking at your build. I doubt you will need the heat sinks. I did the trip to Beagle and am on my way back and only used one....and that was accidental as it was bound to some key that I used when i thought I was in chat. You have over 42ly so arguable it doesn't matter much.
If you disable the AFMU's until needed, you can get away with a 4a power plant which will give another .5ly but from previous readings I believe also gives better heat management (got 3a in my Asp).
When jumping, you can disable; AFMU, planetary hanger, cargo hatch. Some say disable shields and sensors as well. I leave mine on; though I'm testing shields off from Jaques to Bubble to test out a hull integrity hypothesis at the moment.
Lower heat means sooner to be able to spool the FSD for the next jump - important if trying to get somewhere more quickly. irrelevant if you're planning to scan bodies ;)

Hope that helps.

The data will have the same value selling it at 21 ly or 65 kly.

You have to scan them to get the credits. If it is untagged, then you will get an additional bonus.

I think you are carrying too much weight.
2 heatsinks should probably be enough in case something happens. Lots of explorers carry none.
You don't need to have everything powered up all the time. That way you need a bigger power plant and will generate more heat. The same happens with the power distributor. Also, having D rated shields is another way to save some weight.

Just for curiosity. Why did you use a 5 slot with the scanner? A bigger AFM is the usual.

Hint: If you click in the icon right of the title of "core internal" you can find a few predefined builds. There is planetary explorer. I would change the SRV bay for a smaller one:

Thanks all for the tips! The build I posted was from memory (and wrong), this one reflects the actual state of my ship currently:

https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/asp/0pitfFflidisnf5------020202023c4d0i0i2iv62f.Iw1sAwZZA===.IwBj4y1dSA==.?bn=Long%20Range%20Asp

The multiple heatsinks was mainly from the horror stories I'd read in the past about dropping between stars etc, but I also didn't think of the outposts along the way allowing for restock. 2 probably would've been fine, though the jump gain wouldn't have been huge.

To be fair though, with Valije's build I might've been hitting closer to 50LY max range. I habitually A rate my thrusters always, so would be a habit to break there... :p

Parked again for the day, over 6K from Sol now and counting!

EDIT: Also, why mining lasers?

Having better powerplant and power distributor does not contribute to heat.
