To Fly in Open or Not - Is Ganking/Griefing Really That Bad?

Ganking doesn't happen much generally, however at CGs or fresh new discoveries you can almost guarantee it.

That said, last weekend there were individuals at Shinrarta Dezhra interdicting any CMDR they could as soon at they arrived in the system, no doubt instantly attacking and destroying them for the glorious goal of giving themselves the satisfaction of another CMDR aggravated for no ingame reason... And about the same time there were also individuals at Jamesons memorial ramming other CMDRs coming in/out of the station... Again no doubt for some highly noble reason, which is in no way toxic to the community/game.

ps: These are probably the exact same people now desperately trying to badger FD to penalise combat logging so they can dish out even more grief even more effectively. God I hope FD ignores them.

having your own attacker lobby to change the law that what they did to you was ok ....

I see Microsoft have taken more of a public approach to peoples online "reputation" now in a peer-reviewed scoring. Perhaps Frontier should do the same.

There is no formal way to concede defeat in ED Perhaps there should be

I just had the best thought / idea ever.

What if... [hear me out here].... what if.. what if there's a big red 'concede' button.. when someone attacks a victim, all the victim has to do to 'surrender' is push the button and the attacker gets a little trumpet fanfare, a few semi naked girls do a quick samba across the screen, and a message appears to say 'Congratulations commander {name here}, you are victorious!!!!!'

and the victim simply ghosts out slightly and can just be on his merry way!

I think this holds traction.. The attacker gets that all important 'you win' feeling, the victim can go without the re-buy screen.. EVERYONE wins.

Open isnt that bad if you keep away from the hotspots. I do it sometimes but mainly in mobius. I just prefer to be in a different part of the playground from the rough kids. I generally travel unarmed and Im not going to give them the satisfaction of killing me

Would you fly to an engineer packed with commodity goods for engineering in open? Or when you need to unlock one with those penalizing requirements? No, only if you are a complete fool. Because it takes some griefer 5 seconds to waste hours of your work. And they will try just for the lulz.

Elite barely got any PvP, but it got a lot of single road combat at engineers, CGs etc. Even in the far out at an alien site I dont know how long from the bubble. There still comes someone along just to blow people up for the lulz.

This is actually a fair point, while I've never been hit by this, I HAVE seen people who were trying to interdict me nearby. This is in my opinion, just one more reason to remove commodities from engineering though.

You can also meet them in the landing process.

Dear Shintai, I am such a fool.
And guess what? I like it.

All things considered, your right. Elite barely got any PvP.

You can't tell whom is who.

You can't tell whom is who.

Who is the griefer? Which one (is) an actual Pirate? or what ever. As I see it, Elite, separating, dividing, valid game choices into ever smaller pieces, cuts itself to death.

Ganking in open is rather urban legend. However, yes - its happening sometimes.

Its like a monster in dark place in childrens room. Its growing and its sooo scary. But if you turn on the light there is no any monster. You just need to play few times and you will see there is no monster, no darknes.

Firstly, in our crazy language, the plural of sheep is sheep..don't ask why, it just is! Also, singular of trousers is trousers! Hope this clears up everything for you! :D

Secondly, ganking is 'urban legend'? You are falling into the classic ED forum trap of 'it hasn't happened to me..ergo, it doesn't happen!'

Oh dear Kobayashi :p..are you sitting comfortably? then I'll begin..

I have been griefed/ganked - or more accurately - killed due to insurmountable odds, many, many times..but it is not a problem..why?

..because each time I was in a system or at an event looking for trouble..just not quite as much as I found! :D

My record is 3 ganks from two different groups in about 10 mins, while trying to get to a RES for a bounty hunting CG. I informed cmdrs at the station of the unfortunate events befalling me by comms - some sympathy, some laughing..when I materialised back at the station for the third time to say 'byeee everyone..this is ridiculous, I'm going solo', it is safe to say the responses were well, it was mostly 'lolling'!

I then used solo to travel to the RES & returned to open, where my day continued on it's inexorable spiral down the toilet, as I was subsequently killed by Sundae's FDL with the help of some NPC PP enemies - a FGS & FAS wing that chose a particularly inopportune moment to attack me. This was the moment I discarded the PP once & for all! All in all..an expensive, miserable 20+ mins in my ED career!!

There is a vid of this too..but the only way you'll see it is if my PC is stolen..like celeb sex tapes, but slightly more embarrassing!

Having said all that, sure the anecdotal evidence sounds bad in isolation to the unitiated; but firstly I never run & secondly, in normal, everyday game play I have been attacked by apex predator wings maybe 3-4 times since I bought the game 18 months ago..as others have said, well publicised events have the potential to get hairy..

..you rolls the dice & you takes your chances! Hmm, now where have I heard that before?

NB - OP? Not sure where your figures have come from - looks like you divided number of hours by the corresponding number of mins - best to use the same units with numerator & denominator yeah? otherwise you get into territory of dividing apples by oranges which never ends well in exams!

I've got some good news for you, however - your cmdr deaths have only taken up 12.5 mins of your game time & you divide this figure by 24000, which is way lower than 1.66%! So you're even safer than you thought!

Not everyone has them kind of assets or has the time to put in every week so a 10 million rebuy for one person might not be much but for someone with time constrainsts as in a family time, and a job it might very well be significant.

Ganking to me is kind of petty. I thought most of them were deluded teenagers in Mommy's basement with Daddy issues when in fact ex-EVE players in their mid 40's in Mommy's basement with Daddy issues. I have no issues with seasoned players in highly engineered ships wanting a fair 1v1 to test their skill or pirating but attacking players who are in transport ships taking part in community goals is just mindless childish behaviour.

Saying all that it can be exciting but I do think engineered weapons can be OP.

PvP vs PvE: the ever-ending MMOG argument.

Go all the way back to Ultima Online in 1996. Heck, go back even further to MUDs- you'll find the same arguments on both sides. Academic papers have been written on it. It is kind of comical, actually.

What it boils down to is: the 'killers' need 'victims'. The killers don't want to fight other killers- they want someone weaker/less prepared/not interested to kill. Their 'joy' primarily comes from taking joy from others. To cater to them, you need just enough things to do to keep the victims around so that the killers always have someone to prey upon. The killers need mechanisms that a) make it obvious that they are 'winning'; b) clearly destroy some aspect of 'fun' for the losers. The victims need some kind of sense that there is 'justice', but the reality is that they will never be able to 'self-organize' into combat groups like the killers do, because (d'uh) they aren't playing the game to kill someone else.

I have no interest in playing the 'PvP' game. I don't want to spend dozens of hours each week min/maxing my engineered build and practicing my 'skills' so I can fend off an attack from someone who has effectively nothing to lose. Someone whose only goal, whether they admit it or not, is to ruin my fun. So I never play in open.

Would I like to have more social interaction? Perhaps, but not on someone else's terms regarding what the game is supposed to be about. Do I think PvP should be removed from the game? No, but one of the key reasons I play Elite Dangerous is entirely because I'm not forced into being someone else's plaything: I have the legitimate choice of playing Solo or Private, and I do.

Personally, I'd prefer it if Open was PvE, and PvPers had to form up private groups to get their jollies killing other players. But guess what? The PvPers, for the most part, would hate that... because every player they ran into would be (by definition) prepared and on point for PvP action- and most PvPers don't want an equally prepared opponent. That should tell you something about them.

In 2 years of playing in open met 5 pirates and about 3 pkers
Pirates were great fun and very happy i stopped and dropped them some stuff
Pkers also fun 1 was a cutter sitting outside a station, came from behind station and got him to chase me around a bit
Made a break for it and got him to chase me away from station staying 3.5km from cutter and charging fsd for low wake (bluff i dont know what im doing) managed to get him to chase me for 15min before i high waked :)
I tend to operate near edge of bubble so very rarely see anyone let alone PvP cmdrs

I don't think it's "really that bad", for the majority of the time.

Then you see someone tooling around in an Anaconda for hours interdicting harmless Sidewinders with a grim level of dogged perserverance.
It makes you wonder why the game isn't escalating the situation, fighting against him, send out a squad to interdict him, constantly. I mean constantly, like when I take a data mission and that one NPC interdicts me 8 times between the star and my destination port and follows me 30ly-50ly in an FGS/FDL, then performs some ritual of life-preserving necromancy just before I kill him, rising again from the dead.
He keeps escaping? Send more Annies his way for max masslock, then he may only highwake out.

I've spent the last few days flying a modded ludicrous-speed iEagle in a busy area to see if this still happens. It does.
My speed alone offered near immunity to this one Annie in particular. After he realised his little Taipan couldn't catch me, he avoided me and continued his business of ganking his indentured victims.
I'm pretty sure every time an FDL or anything with teeth came into the system, he logged off or highwaked, but that's difficult to confirm.

Conversely, there are people who just say hello and have a chat with you and there are people who at least try to give themselves a good reason to PvP, it's really not all bad. :)

I've played a little open and a lot of closed. To be fair.... Enjoyed both in the past. But as the DLC's have seen uber weaponed AI and player ships proliferate, it's now impossible to do anything enjoyable. So academic.

surely, you mean 12.5 minutes worth of death (being killed), or am I not getting the stat right?

Personally, I've got about 1500 hours logged, been killed twice by CMDR's (three times, but combat zones don't count, seeing as killing other sis the point...), and of those two, one was I walked into one with my eyes wide open (a CMDR that had a name associated with slippery mammary tips), as I was trying to work out a defence for him using dumbfires to kill people inside stations. I did work out a defence, but he logged off before I got a chance to take action. (Enter station in solo, buy viper, equip dumbfires, use his own tactics against him). I actually had fun working it out and watching him do his thing.

I've only been killed once, back in Gamma, by someone that wanted to test out their Asp. I was pretty useless at combat then, and was expecting some chit chat before the attack....

Anyway, that is one random kill in over 1500 hrs...

I'm good with open.

The dangers of open are vastly exaggerated.

I have spare fingers in one hand to count the times I was killed by other players... in 2 years.

Do not fear the darkness. Sky is full of stars. They will guide You.

Hmmmm, I took a course in celestial navigation. Not helping much with game. Sooooo...

Checked the astrology (not astronomy) section of USA today, and it said it was a good day to put someone on ignore. :)

An I lose button?

That's a revelation. The other player doesn't even need an I win button, winning is easier than ever - I like it!
