Some thoughts whilst "Touching" myself yesterday
Dead & Buried
Really good fun, the most fun I have had in VR out of a cockpit so far.
I had disabled chat , tho was fortunate enough to be paired with someone who seemed friendly enough so was experimenting with the hand tracking, giving high 5 or thumbs up at end of waves etc..
All in all it was rather surreal but very compelling. it was just a horde game shooting bad guys but you can duck in and out of cover etc.
Also as it is an official rift title it did not need the rear camera at all (however i will be getting that, Arizona sunshine and The Lab has convinced me of the need, and i cant be bothered mucking about with full room 2 camera VR, too much of a faff.
Arizona Sunshine....
I gave this a go last night, my mate bought it for his VIVE and thanks to the wonders of steam sharing I got to have a go too. (Thanks Dave)
the campaign mode seems great, and seems just the sort of thing which I am after in a virtual shooter game. its pretty and fairly well polished. walking around following a linear path shooting zombies in the head
I tried horde mode and, whilst there is no need for full 360 degree tracking, this has me convinced that i will be getting the 3rd camera for my birthday. in the campaign at least so far, the game is slow paced enough to keep on top of your direction and use the teleport accordingly, but in horde mode it was just too fast, and, god damn it if i didnt ALWAYS end up in that 60 degree direction where touch loses tracking in the official 2 cameras front set up.
I know you can do full room tracking with 2 cameras but its not perfect in my experience (not terrible) but its too much of a pain having to move the cameras about etc so i cant be bothered with it.... the 3rd camera will screw to the ceiling and can live there unplugged when not in use.
12 months ago if you had told me i would be spending almost £750 on a VR solution i would have told you you were off your head!.
but at least it has come with shed loads of games, loads of demos and I know it is unfashionable but i really like the XB1 pad and wireless adapter too.
Thank god its xmas
Rip Coil
This comes free with any purchase on the oculus store for a limited time (so under £1 if you like) and for that it is a must purchase.
its essentially a frizbie game crossed with pong, multiplayer and its a no brainer really for the price..... I was paired with a couple of german guys playing it and fortunately they were just as rubbish as me. i (/we) keep throwing the frizbie backwards into our own goal.. a farily simple game but good enough!. you stand on a hover board and move L & R by leaning, then you lean about and catch the frizbie with the aim of no letting it go in your goal. you can also punch it back by powering up a super punch, which is harder to pull off.
thank god for the wrist protectors as I did the stereotype error and let go of my touch and would have slung it into my TV!. letting go of them is a real problem and this is amplified in this game where you are throwing an item out of your hand. I will be making sure any demos of touch people have the strap nice and tight!!!
(oh and the valve demo the lab is also very cool, but that is old hat now)
