What other games do you recommend?

For me, DCS is a must have in VR. With a haptic feedback chair, powering up a helo is sublime. IRacing is also amazing but expensive and only geared to online races (best FFB). Assetto Corsa also uses scanned tracks and is really close to IRacing in feel and VR is really good (has single play campaign). Pcars is fun if not a little too arcade like for my tastes. For those lucky enough to have Richard burns Rally, there is a mod for VR that is quite good (work in progress). Being an older title, it isn't as pretty as Dirt Rally but many find it's physics to be more realistic and what Codemaster is trying to emulate. Dirt Rally is not to be ignored though and is great fun in VR. For me sitting in a race car or an aircraft is the definition of immersion. To parrot many others, VR is truly a game changer.

Aside from Lucky's Tale (which is surprisingly good) and Adr1ft (which can induce motion sickness but is quite nice otherwise although the gameplay seems incredibly limited unless I'm missing something) I've only really been playing Elite. I'm sorely tempted by Eagle Flight (curses - was sure that was going to be in the Black Friday sale), if only to have a cool game to show off to friends who don't have a spare 10hrs to learn the basics of ED.

Not a game as such, but I can recommend the Apollo 11 experience. There's a moment in it (after the apollo has escaped the earth's gravity and you're looking down on the planet) that's so powerful my wife actually burst into tears (and I've seen Youtube videos of others having a similar reaction).

New Retro Arcade, as no one seems to have suggested yet.
Good use of VR.

Are there any games available?

Don't forget a good 2D (in 3D game engine) side scroller like INSIDE. I played it on virtual cinema screen (VorpX) and had one of the best gaming experience so far in VR even it's not a VR title. The amosphere was amazing. Absolutely a recommendation. A brilliant game. It's art.

I have DCS world but can't find the real "access" to it. Do you have to invest a lot of time or do you have to play online??? Just downloaded the free version. Any tipps?

Regarding 'Dirt Rally' and 'Project Cars':

Is there any point to play those with a joystick (HOTAS)?
I also own rudder pedals and succesfully use them in the SRV (no gear change needed), but they are obviously missing a third pedal for any car simulation.

So, are those driving games recommended without steering wheel and proper pedals? (I definitely won't get those ... I already sunk enough cash into this space game ... ;))

I've been tinkering with Warthunder. The VR is very good, you really get a sense of how small those cockpits were. It runs well, hitting 90fps with a gtx980, res at 1080 and setting on high.

The menu system is garbage though. It was already not designed very will to navigate, now it's 30 feet tall.

Something very nice is that you can select graphics options from the launcher. That's something Elite could really use. Dr Kalis app is ok, but errors on me whenever there's an update

I played Project Cars with the XBox controller that came with the Rift. It was not fun to play it. Racing games are supposed to be played with a steering wheel. You can even play with the keyboard, it works but the great fun and the right feeling when your in your Formular 1 car chasing the opponents with 300 km/h only comes with a steering wheel and pedals.

I don't know what they give you with the base (free game) as far as missions go, but any aircraft you purchase come with missions and their are 3rd party missions available as well as a mission creator. The Combined Arms modules allows you to drive tanks and vehicles as well as control AA and Sams and such or you could just sit back and play JTAC and play it as a strategy game. My particular interest being all things flight, I find I spend most of my time learning (or trying to) the intricacies of each bird. They are all full simulations with clickable cockpit controls except the Flaming Cliffs birds. Haven't played it online, but I recommend you visit their forums. They have a robust community.

Oh and when flying the Huey (and as of today) the M18 helos, you can man the door gunner position while the AI or another person flies the bird.

Without a wheel pedal setup you would kill the VR immersion for sure. Not to mention you would never be competitive using a stick or pad controller against those who do. With a W/P setup, however, the feeling you are actually driving a race car is awesome. Just like flying with a Hotas makes you feel like you are flying a spaceship in ED or my favorite a Huey in DCS. I would not recommend racing, especially in VR, if your not up to buying a wheel. If, in the future, you do get a wheel for say a XMas present, you won't be sorry. If you really like driving fast cars that is.

Well, I've made the mistake of getting Project Cars without owning a wheel (I have a TM Warthog Stick/Throttle setup and Rudder pedals that can be used as gas/brake pedals). No fun at all. Then again, I then also remembered why I don't own other driving sims: i *hate* driving. Doing it daily to and from work. Why on earth would I want to do that in a game? Yeah, I felt really silly, tbh. Guess I got it for the VR, but didn't stay for the fun. Yet, even if I liked driving, controlling a car with a stick is simply no fun at all, the mechanics are simply too alien.

I, too, hated the death defying grind of driving to work daily before retiring that is. I would say, however, that having raced in sims for years has definitely honed my driving skills and that learning things like "left foot braking" and mastering the behavior of various vehicles has saved my life on more than a few occasions. Not to mention that driving 300+ kph is best left to the computer and track and not possible at any rate in the grind. Love going fast.

For me, there is only one other game in VR which is tempting me away from ED and that is Onward. I've had no military or counter terrorism experience, but I imagine this game must be getting me pretty close to it. I love the selection of weapons available and have even built myself a noob tube out of 40mm plumbers pipe to hold the controllers more steady (especially for that long range sniper shot!). If you have a Vive then have a look. I can't remember the price, but it was a bargain.

@RhymeRhyme, Bannok & dogbite:
Thank you, guys, for the answers!
I was expecting this, but hoping for a different answer.

Well, I think, I'll stick to space then - at least in respect to games that need additional hardware.
(I am looking forward to 'The Climb', though, as soon as my touch controllers will have arrived!)

Some thoughts whilst "Touching" myself yesterday

Dead & Buried

Really good fun, the most fun I have had in VR out of a cockpit so far.

I had disabled chat , tho was fortunate enough to be paired with someone who seemed friendly enough so was experimenting with the hand tracking, giving high 5 or thumbs up at end of waves etc..

All in all it was rather surreal but very compelling. it was just a horde game shooting bad guys but you can duck in and out of cover etc.

Also as it is an official rift title it did not need the rear camera at all (however i will be getting that, Arizona sunshine and The Lab has convinced me of the need, and i cant be bothered mucking about with full room 2 camera VR, too much of a faff.

Arizona Sunshine....

I gave this a go last night, my mate bought it for his VIVE and thanks to the wonders of steam sharing I got to have a go too. (Thanks Dave)

the campaign mode seems great, and seems just the sort of thing which I am after in a virtual shooter game. its pretty and fairly well polished. walking around following a linear path shooting zombies in the head

I tried horde mode and, whilst there is no need for full 360 degree tracking, this has me convinced that i will be getting the 3rd camera for my birthday. in the campaign at least so far, the game is slow paced enough to keep on top of your direction and use the teleport accordingly, but in horde mode it was just too fast, and, god damn it if i didnt ALWAYS end up in that 60 degree direction where touch loses tracking in the official 2 cameras front set up.

I know you can do full room tracking with 2 cameras but its not perfect in my experience (not terrible) but its too much of a pain having to move the cameras about etc so i cant be bothered with it.... the 3rd camera will screw to the ceiling and can live there unplugged when not in use.

12 months ago if you had told me i would be spending almost £750 on a VR solution i would have told you you were off your head!.

but at least it has come with shed loads of games, loads of demos and I know it is unfashionable but i really like the XB1 pad and wireless adapter too.

Thank god its xmas :D

Rip Coil

This comes free with any purchase on the oculus store for a limited time (so under £1 if you like) and for that it is a must purchase.

its essentially a frizbie game crossed with pong, multiplayer and its a no brainer really for the price..... I was paired with a couple of german guys playing it and fortunately they were just as rubbish as me. i (/we) keep throwing the frizbie backwards into our own goal.. a farily simple game but good enough!. you stand on a hover board and move L & R by leaning, then you lean about and catch the frizbie with the aim of no letting it go in your goal. you can also punch it back by powering up a super punch, which is harder to pull off.

thank god for the wrist protectors as I did the stereotype error and let go of my touch and would have slung it into my TV!. letting go of them is a real problem and this is amplified in this game where you are throwing an item out of your hand. I will be making sure any demos of touch people have the strap nice and tight!!!

(oh and the valve demo the lab is also very cool, but that is old hat now)

Did you pre-order the Touch? You would have gotten The Unspoken.

It's a wizrd battle game that sucks you right in. Great fun. You can play against AI or humans and there is a pretty good unlock and progression tree.

One of the best full games out there.

Also with Touch, launch the Medium and Quill apps. There are just virtual art and drawing platforms that came with the Touch, but once you start playing it becomes obvious that VR is much more than games. Especially when you open professional scenes and look around them. It's incredible.

yes i did and no i didnt (yet)

currently John Lewis have not sent out the pre-order codes.. i have been badgering them and they promised the code will come in the post today (god knows why not email like everyone else)... Others however have simply been told JL have no record of ever promising the pre-order games and they have deleted the page which does say it.
(not 100% tho as a quick google shows, top hit)

we shall see what happens. Right now i am regretting cancelling my oculus order and going with another company

Anyone tried 'Dead Hungry' yet? It's available from Steam, for both Vive and Oculus Rift (touch) users.

From Q Games, my..erm Cousins company. ;)

I played some more Dead and Buried yesterday. I played 2v2 shootout. Everyone in the "Saloon" was talking. Hive fives, thumbs up. It's the first time I've actually spoken in a game in more time than I can remember. It felt like the excitement of playing Halo 2 again.

At one point my team mate and I were crouched down behind the bar (meaning crouched in real life). Bullets were flying overhead. We were just laughing and peeking.

I can only imagine what it looked like from the outside. But it was a Ready Player One moment.

I feel shooters are ruined for me. I hope Elite out of cockpit uses Touch. It's the next step.
