To Colonia without a Fuel Scoop Challenge

I consider being barking a positive ;)

A major push today saw me manage over 900 jumps. Since I was ahead of expectations, I decided to cross the galactic arm gap and I'm now in the Saittarius-Carina Arm.

Current System: Gru Dryiae SQ-D b32-14
Distance from Sol: 7,576LY
Distance to Colonia: 14,662.34 LY
Current fuel: 345 T
Fuel used: 151 T
Number of jumps: 1,996
Estimated number of jumps remaining: 3,988
Actual distance travelled: 10,322 LY

With 33.4% of the distance covered and only 30.6% of the fuel used, it is obvious that I can make it. The only question now is how few jumps I can do it in.

I believe sanity is an "expensive optional extra" when it comes to exploring in Elite. :D

Anyway I am in awe and I sniff a galnet post in the making.

So your ship is completely fitted with tanks and you are plotting economical whole time to make the journey without refueling at all, right?

Makes me curious if a mix outfit of fuel tanks and cargo racks would make it possible to use fastest plotting with cargo slider... Could save a lot of jumps ?!

Yes.

Wouldn't work, unfortunately. For one thing, replacing a fuel tank with a cargo rack means less fuel; some could be got rid of and still make the journey but not enough for the slider to become meaningful. But more importantly, even with all the internal modules as cargo racks it wouldn't actually help. The slider could be used to change from zero weight to full weight - but with the fuel tank option it is already using the full weight distance!

What is needed is the option to set an arbitrary max jump distance. It's been on the explorers' wish list for a long time.

Decided to call it quits for today as the servers seem to be playing up a bit. Witchspace is taking noticably longer and I had a couple of disconnects during jumps which eat up fuel for no progress.

Current System: Flyua Hypue SU-D d13-128
Distance from Sol: 9,440 LY
Distance to Colonia: 12,741 LY
Current fuel: 310 T
Fuel used: 186 T
Number of jumps: 2,478
Estimated number of jumps remaining: 3,409
Actual distance travelled: 12,977 LY

42% of the distance covered and 37.5% of the fuel used.

Yes.

If you make it (and I make it to colonia) I think many a drink shall be waiting/coming your way. You wonderful brave !

Also how do you work out how many jumps you've done so far? Is there a way to quickly total it with EDSM?

For the number of jumps, I'm keeping a running record of the jumps via a spreadsheet (so I can track fuel usage) and periodically exporting the travel history from EDDiscovery to make sure I haven't missed some.

Less than 10K to go now!

Current System: Prua Phoe LE-E c4
Distance from Sol: 12,236 LY
Distance to Colonia: 9,890 LY
Current fuel: 265 T
Fuel used: 231 T
Number of jumps: 3,150
Estimated number of jumps remaining: 2,784
Actual distance travelled: 16,826 LY

55% of the distance travelled and over 53% of the fuel left. It's looking like I might have approaching 100 T of fuel left when I get to Colonia...

You're making impressive progress, CMDR. Just curious, how do you plan to get back?

Refuel at Jaques & head on for Beagle Point? (*)

More likely, fit the best fuel scoop I can get (6E I think) and head home. If I find the 6E too annoying I can always transfer a decent scoop from the bubble - I think I remembered to store a 7B which is nearly as fast as the 7A but without the eye-wateringly high transfer cost.

I might be tempted to try for no-scoop to BP one day, but only after we get lightweight sensors and it would involve following the Saggitarius-Carina arm from the Bubble to avoid needing to cross the Abyss. I would also need a support team for that one: maybe to get to the destination and definitely to get home again!

Outstanding Experiment![up][up]

Take a rep. Never thought that this could work.

I'd be more than willing to fill an Anaconda with fuel limpets and tag along for the occasional refuelling. Although at . I'm sure others in the Fuel Rats would too. With 340T of limpets in my Anaconda that'd require 2 of us to give you a complete full tank again from empty.
Although given you can make roughly half the trip on 1 tank we'd have to do 3 refuels total. One halfway, one at Beagle and one halfway back. :D

I'm up for that.

Just to be clear, I've no intention of attempting getting to BP without a scoop at present. Thanks for the kind offers of help, but it's just a future possibility. OTOH, if someone else wants to give it a go I would be more than happy to help out in at least a technical support capacity (eg investigating efficient routes, spreadsheets, etc).

Today's update:

Current System: Blua Hypa VJ-Q d5-158
Distance from Sol: 14,214 LY
Distance to Colonia: 7,911 LY
Current fuel: 233 T
Fuel used: 263 T
Number of jumps: 3,667
Estimated number of jumps remaining: 2,059
Actual distance travelled: 19,767 LY

I don't anticipate being able to put in as many hours as I've been doing over the past few days, but I've got to the point where I feel confident enough to book a table at Jaques for Christmas dinner :D

Just to be clear, have you been refuelling at the outposts or are you doing this on a one tank wonder?

Also save me a seat at Jaques , a bottle for, you mad man. How does Centauri Mega Gin sound?

1 tank wonder so far and looking like he's going to easily sail into Jaques with ~1/5th of a tank left!!

75% done now. Route plotting is getting a bit problematical with anything over 200 LY or so taking an age. I've been restricting it to just using a limited subset of star types (typically F, G and either A or K) to avoid a huge number of jumps but this has sometimes resulted in relatively large jumps (as much as 13 LY :D) which uses more fuel. As a result I'm currently looking at more like 90 T of fuel left at the end but it could be a reasonable amount more or less than that.

Current System: Blaa Eaec QR-V d2-63
Distance from Sol: 16,585 LY
Distance to Colonia: 5,491 LY
Current fuel: 191 T
Fuel used: 305 T
Number of jumps: 4,204
Estimated number of jumps remaining: 1,398
Actual distance travelled: 23,315 LY
