Why are so many people afraid of us?

I'm a guy that likes to play games with other people, some folks are terrified
of being 'beaten' by another Cmdr while playing the game.

....and we're still in BETA!

It doesn't matter to some folks that the rules aren't being enforced, the communications aren't in game yet, or that we haven't been given even a fraction of the space that we're going to get.

Nobody's griefing you... Yet. You know what 'griefing' is? If I knew your Cmdr name, then followed you around and refused to let you dock.

Griefing would be if I knew who you were, then made sure you couldn't land because I'd kamikaze into you. (knowing it's you.)

If we were playing WoW, and I put my avatar in between yours and a quest giver, not allowing you to turn in your mission.... THAT'S griefing.

Don't cry that someone in an early beta is shooting you dead when that's what the rules allow. 1) there will be better rules. 2) the space will be wide open 3) you don't know what griefing is.

It's getting old.

Sorry I couldn't resist ;)

Another thing:

People are so dorky about giving neg-reps on this board.

I've never given anyone a neg-rep unless they're racists or terrible people.

I've been given two of them for this thread alone. The same people that are worried about 'griefers', are passive-aggressive jerks.

All they have to do is tell me why they don't agree... but they don't. They just neg-rep when they know nobody else will ever see it.

Crappola.

Some people have had quite bad experiences online and have a right to express their concerns - it's up to FD to judge the merit of it, not you. You can of course express your opinion as to why they are wrong, but name calling ?

I would negative rep you just for that comment alone!

Isn't neg-rep spam actually a more pernicious form of griefing? ;) Semi-seriously, getting killed just costs time and insurance excess money, whereas a neg-rep is a way for people to record indelibly that they thought you're an idiot. Down with neg-rep sniping! Criticise the idea (in the thread), not the poster. Only if the poster is being a fool all over the forums, consider using neg-rep to remind them to gently correct their ways.

JugHed, want to start a neg-rep abuse sufferers self-help with me on a Tuesday night? ;)

Yes - getting killed costs time and money not helped by the fact that a few are hacking the client to give them an edge (infinite hull; extra cargo; whatever) FD are fairly slow to react to these issues, which is a shame, and so some people capitalise on this and ruin it for everyone. Their motive is not to test the Beta but to harass others. It is these types of players that are ruining the experience and accounts for some of the threads.

I sometimes negative-rep people, not because they are an "idiot" - more that I strongly don't agree with them - I post why and neg rep them.

It's been a while since I felt the need to do that I add ;)

If your trying to play the game the traditional way at the start it takes a long time to be able to afford insurance. 1700 for the ship that you get replaced for free. You need a good 5000cr before you can buy a pulse laser and then afford insurance to replace it.

It took me almost a week an hour here and there before I simply gave up. Too many crashes to desktop. Too many people shooting me down who were supposed to be on my side in conflict.

I actually lost money and restarted several times.

Then I gave up trying to play how it was meant to be played. Instead I just go to a conflict zone, collect credits for a couple of ships, then save and exit. rinse and repeat till I got about 7000cr.

If any players start shooting at me I quit the game and come back later. I don't want to PvP till I can comfortably pay insurance multiple times. That isn't now.

I don't want to play PvP at all. And do not appreciate my own side trying to kill me either.

This game is hard, and not helped by crash bugs and malicious players that don't respect unspoken rules. Perhaps with comms it will get better.

But for newbies to the game like I was, PvP is typically not welcome when to die is to start over. For PvP I'd rather play war thunder where I can repair my plane cheaply or wait 15 mins to a few hours to repair for free depending on what tier plane it is.

ED for beginners just means starting over, and over and over. That is the biggest problem for people that wanted a coop game as sold by David in all his interviews. He always states that PvP will be limited in the game, so many of us are disappointed when it seems to be the direction many are trying to force the game in.

The original elite never had you die and start over. There was always a save from the last launch from a spaceport so all you lost was what you accumulated during your last excursion from safety. That is what many of us who played 30 years ago remember. Losing everything so easily was an unwelcome surprise that probably becomes less of a problem once you have accumulated some wealth.

Exactly.

Getting killed by another player = fine.
Having to spend an hour* just to recuperate the losses = annoying.

(*Depending on the worth of your ship, the frequency of client crashes that make you lose all earnings since the last Save&Quit, how often you need to fly back for repairs etc.)

@Liqua and @Antmax - I utterly agree and would add.

Firstly I am backer, but with limited play time, due to real word responsibilities. So I am never going to be an ace pilot. I just want to enjoy the game and play it the way I want to.

People call it PvP but in my experience its Pvp or PPvp we are actually complaining about. If a player attacks me in their fully loaded Eagle or Cobra and I am in my puny basic Sidewinder carrying a full load of cargo as I approach the station. Is that really PvP? Not it's not, its the classic big player attacks little player because he can. I die, I get my free Sidewinder and have to reset because I have no money for new cargo. Next run - someone else does it.

Granted there will be mechanisms in place at launch but they are all retrospective. Nothing I have seen helps me at the time. It's okay putting bounties on the attackers head or killing them but it doesn't help me. I have to bear the cost, restart, rinse and repeat.

Once this game goes to gamma and we have a mix of advanced players and rookies this is going to cause huge frustration for the rookies.

I have been trying to test what its like being a trader and as Antmax observes that's not possible currently, hopefully it will be by gamma. I was really positive before I started playing in PB1 that I would be able to play in the way I want in the all group but I am rapidly changing my view.

When the final game is released, there will be of rules, laws, sanctions, mutual interests between the players. The game will be playable and probably disciplined. Perhaps, Frontier will apply sanctions outside of the game, to discourage the abuses

I'm with you, man!

Thanks for the support!

It's a technical point, but you don't like playing with people, you like playing against people.

That is not true. At all.

I would rather the rules be made that Co-op is the preferred gameplay.

It took me exactly 1 hour to earn enough for two pulse lasers.

Once I got those, (because I read the forums) it took me exactly 1 more hour to replace one of those with a gimbaled laser. Once I had that, it took me about a half-hour to get another.

After that, it took me about 3 hours of gameplay, (with goofy exploration/testing fun) to get an Eagle.

I won't tell you how long after that it took me to get a Cobra, because it will make people mad. It wasn't very long.

The Point: It should be harder, not easier. Just because people shoot you sometimes, it doesn't make them 'griefers' or bad people. You're just there. We will get spread out and have bounties/penalties put on us soon enough.
I'm just tired of hearing the whining.

Make sure you have enough to cover insurance. Stay to the places you should. Keep an eye on your scanner. Be a good pilot: You win.

It's too easy how it is.

Edit: that was all with a piece of crap stick and an aged computer. watch out now that I have trackir, an X52 pro, and a monster rig!
