I'm not saying it's Thargoid for sure.

I just think it's behavior is compatible with what I would expect from a Thargoid. I does not look Thargoid to me, even if it has an eight fold symmetry.

Thargoid or not, I don't think it's the same bunch we ran into the last time. Perhaps a different culture, perhaps a totally different species?

Things that say Thargoid:
- Eight fold symmetry
- Hyperspace interdiction
- Interest in ammonia world
- Interest in the Pleiades
- Knowledge of our system names and Morse code

Things that say not Thargoid:
- Visual appearance
- They seem healthy and have functioning hyperdrives

ALSO their current behaviour definitely appears to be non-hostile, merely curiousity, and possibly even helpful if the yellow dots they appear to be drawing from the interdicted ships are traces of UA infection

First confirmed human fatality at the hands of aliens. Right on, Commander :D

I could swear that the UPTV (Unknown Possibly Thargoid Vessel) pulled him in to destroy the ship. War! WAR! WAAAAARR!

Great to see an alien ship at last, superb start to the new year. Looking forward to a "first encounter" of my own.

Cosmo - you mean the alien crash site rather than the alien ruins, I believe.

I whould add to that list that youre ship gets really cold when hyperdicted.
Ammonia is fluid between -33*C and -77*C

And that your ship is not totally disabled.
You have still the shields operational, as is the life support.
This does not allow any ship to freeze over,
in the current game mechanics.
From what i can tell, your HUD, controls,
engines and FSD are down.
Rest should be up.

So the freezing cold of "winter" is emenating
from the Unknown Ship.

As you can see down below, the ship gets shot at
by an NPC, but the shots hit the shields.
Proof:

And space is close to Absolute Zero at -273 Celsius; the interdicted ships are disabled, with power appearing to be totally disrupted, so I speculate that the heating is affected

From what the video prooves, that is incorrect.
Might be a thing with how the "cutscene" is done,
but life support and shields are on, too much heat to run cold,
even in a specially crafted DBX.
If power would be totally cut, so would be life support,
but the CMDRs never have the "emergency visor" on,
that you normally would have when LS is out.

Very frustratingly I'm 24 kylies from home. And then this begins...

From the videos, I'd propose the name:

OCTOMORPH

Cheerz

This.. I think should be noted..

In fact this may be a critical bit of intel at some point in time... remember how the Alliance "worked" with the Thargoids after FFE? Guess which power has a weapon aimed specifically at cooking your bits?

Also extreme cold has some travel advantages especially when trying to hop certain stellar phenomena that are extremely hot..

(Tinfoil intensifies)

if someone with an UP is close by and quick enough to do it, try dropping an UP before the scout jumps out of the system see if the UP's EMP disables it, worth a shot?

1. You can't do it.
2. Even if you somehow do it - nothing will happen.

It's fully cinematic trailer - just look and relax.

Aye I saw, though you've cut off half of it..

There's nothing above 18,000hz

the alien vessel is scanning us for something and i think its if someone has it the contact might be a bit more hostile

and that would explain why granger and his friends got attacked by one of the alien ships its not the UA's but it might be the probes or something we still haven't found

Welp, I got Hyperdicted(its pretty "scary') and i can confirm I have no UP/UA in my hold(Infact i have nothing) so the ship is a RNG event/countdown/or system based!

Could be based on some other common factors. Combat rank? Exploration rank? Maybe they are only interdicting Commanders that have Palin's UA resistant cargo holds?

Perhaps the relics found on the planetary base with all those triangle things around will change the encounter or perhaps not but worth a shot.

@ Erid, how do you know, have you tried it? once you get power back in your ship it COULD be possible to intercept it and try, dont just dismiss it out of hand because YOU dont think it would work, try it then come back and say it didn't work for sure.

Dunno if it's helpful. But I play in 4K in max settings. Some 4K images of the ship are enclosed below. BIG size Images, so spoiler tags used

Pretty unusual stuff. What did those guys have?

So far these Aliens couldn't have cared less that our ships held captive probes, artifacts, and a full loot from the sites... but randomly blasted some commander? There's gotta be more to it.

Regarding the disappearing NPC, couldn't that just be the game going "Oh yeah. Scripted event. This guy shouldn't be here." and getting rid of him?

Someone will try. How far UP can disable ships? 4+km?

I'm confident that it is definitely Thargoids.
If I thought asking Michael Brookes would confirm it, I'd ask him, but I'm sure he's smart enough to not give anything away.
