Different Sets of Active Obelisks
OK, so in a few comments I've mentioned sets of active obelisks in the Open servers. As we all know, in Solo play once you scan an obelisk it becomes inactive, and the set of active obelisks is always the same. In other words, you always find the same active obelisks. This gave rise to the map we've been using that has the obelisks numbered from 1-15. Many CMDRs, myself included, have also tried every one of the artifact combinations in those 15 obelisks, yielding a maximum of 13 data pieces.
On the other hand, in Open play CMDRs began noticing different obelisks activating, and the trigger for this remains unknown. I have no idea how it happens, but after the many disconnects today I noticed that many times when getting back into Open play, the active obelisks would be different. I decided to go through the site and make annotations in the "classic" map. As of now I have four sets of active obelisks. Set A corresponds to the obelisks found in solo and in the map. Sets B, C, D are variations I have seen and mapped using a color code (for now). I've gone through the site twice for each of the three sets in order to make sure that the Obelisks don't change while I'm moving. As far as I can tell, the sets only change when I log out and then back in again, so they seem to be tied to certain instances. The Beacons appeared to have been raised and emptied of the relic in all of those instances.
For now the image is pretty crappy quality. I took several images of the site in order to stitch them and try to make a higher-resolution map where we can easily see the active obelisks per set. I'll probably do that tomorrow unless someone beats me to it. Hope this helps out to figure out a pattern or something.
Edit Shoot, forgot to say. I started out with the 13 pieces of data that I got from Solo. As I got into some of these instances with different sets, I also started getting additional pieces of info, putting my total at 21 right now. I believe the pieces came from scans done by other CMDRs. While I mapped Set C, I was carrying around a Casket+Orb combination, and scanned all 15 of the obelisks, but I can't say if any of the pieces I got were from those scans. As for Sets B and D, I scanned some of the obelisks but with an empty cargo hold, yet I got an additional 3 data pieces. Anyhow, this all makes me think that every set of active obelisks has a corresponding set of data pieces.
Edit And forgot to mention again... some obelisks from Set D overlap with other sets. You can see this in the 1/2-Bank; in the 5-Bank; in the 8/9-Bank; and in the 13-Bank. There is no overlap in the 12-Bank (the blue 12-ball thing is right over the diamond-shaped structure that contains two obelisks. Set A has the inwards-facing obelisk active while Set B has the outwards one active). I'm using numbering from the original set to refer to the banks here, just in case.
Finally, for anyone wondering... the red hexagon refers to where I parked my Asp while in solo.
