Alien archeology and other mysteries: Thread 9 - The Canonn

Today's Community Goal is requiring UA fragments, to research how to protect stations from UA bombing. (At least, that's what Sirius Corp wants you to think :D)

Edit: here's the mission text, via /r/elitecg
It is widely understood that Unknown Artefacts have the ability to extract materials from their immediate environment as part of a complex self-repair process. Unfortunately, this can have disastrous effects on starships and other forms of machinery.

Perhaps the worst affected by this phenomena have been the galaxy's starports, many of which have had to suspend services as a result of Unknown-Artefact related disruption. The high prices offered for Unknown Artefacts on the black market means many starports have been flooded with the mysterious objects. And although meta-alloys can be used to counter Unknown-Artefact related interference, the scarcity of the material means this potential salve has had little impact.

But a recent announcement from the Sirius Corporation indicates that the company intends to tackle the issue by funding a major new research and development project. The purpose of the project is to make starports and other outposts more resistant to Unknown-Artefact related interference through the application of specific microresources.

In support of this programme, the Sirius Corporation has placed an open order for Unknown Fragments, Untypical Shield Scans and Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis, and promised to reward pilots who deliver these materials to Cormack Hub in the Procyon system.

The campaign begins on the 19th of January 3303 and will run for two weeks. If the final target is met earlier than planned, the campaign will end immediately.

To be eligible for rewards you must sign up as an active participant before delivering Unknown Fragments, Untypical Shield Scans and Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis to Cormack Hub in the Procyon system.

Be aware that faction-state changes, UA bombing and other disruptive events can negatively impact markets and station services, and could prevent the initiative from running smoothly.

What will happen if I die with this mission? Will I lose all progress or entire mission?

Well, having just been killed by a player in Mobius PG, I can say that no, you do not lose any progress.

You will however lose all the items, and the money to reclaim your ship...

If you were killed on purpose I hope you reported them to mobius group admins!
I died in open, just lost the re-buy amount (3.5M for my python! )

I'm on 29 data scans and hoping eventually either fdev will fix this puzzle so it's actually solvable or I manage leech the remaining scans off other players in mobius, it does get boring though sitting at the ruins watching cmdrs come and go all day. Just the odd CTD or server disconnect every hour or so.

PS: Can people PLEASE stop parking their ships close to the obelisks - you stop the SRV's being able to scan them!!!!
Also don't park too close to the deep ditches, it a pain in the rear to get out of those if you can't use thrusters due to a ship being close by.

My Ruin(ed) bug list now up to 11

Dirty. ;)

Don't know what came over the guy, but he's probably being removed as we speak.

On the topic at hand, and I'm sure it's been mentioned somewhere within these 1034 pages. The alien hyperdictions have been primarily been happening in the vicinity of Maia and Merope, right? This is 100 % a blind stab in the dark coupled with a bit of muscle atrophy, but would it be entirely insane to take a look at other clusters of blue stars, like the set in the region of NGC 6231?

What this can mean?

- Compass (as a drawing tool)? >> or more >> Freemasonry! :D
- Angle - like this or different?

What else?

edit: wait... what if they are explaining us their math? Triangle - 180 degrees?

Wow, thanks for the clarification. I can understand COL 70 being lockable, i.e., nothing of interest, but Bernard's Loop and Horsehead are pretty important "tourist" sites so that's got me scratching my head as to why (since you can always see the loop from Earth and that general area). The loop and Horsehead was my second long-range explorer mission when I started playing. I'd hate to see them locked on a permanent basis for newer players.

Barnard's Loop is not (AFAIK) locked - I've been scanning systems there all day looking for outposts and none in Barnard's Loop have come up as locked (though I think Horsehead is, and Col 70 certainly is). There may be some part of Barnard's Loop that is locked, but I have asked where and got no specifics. If you are really are talking about Bernard's Loop I apologise, as I am not there :)

---------------------------------

Just confirmed - Horsehead has permit locked systems.

FDev have stated that gameplay is the same across all modes (putting aside the obelisks not resetting bug in Solo). Correct me if I'm wrong there.

With the launch of ED on XBox One does that statement still stand (as in same across all platforms) and if so will it still stand with PS4 being released later this year & maybe Mac at a later date.

The reason I ask this is that I currently have 31 of the 36 known decoded scans. One of the last 5 I need is Culture 10. The combination I have seen on several spreadsheets is Token + Urn and to scan obelisk H21/E21.
Last night I logged into Open & H21 was lit so I loaded up with Token & Urn & set off & scanned the obelisk. The response I got was the "You have already accessed that data" message.
This leads me to believe either 1) things are different from PC to XBox One, 2) the combination is incorrect or 3) combination sets differ from player to player.

The 3rd option would go some way to explain why players see different lit obelisks when other players join Open or PG.
I observed this one evening when overlooking group H viewing with a high external view & an obelisk turning on then off & back on again whilst another player drove around group H & surrounding area in his SRV.

With the issue of server disconnects do you think this will become a bigger issue when PS4 players join the ED community.

Spent a good part of the day pondering over this, and.... nothing. Tried all manners of triangles, prisms, tetrahedron, tetrahedron nets, but none of the computed coordinates had any planets. Had one that was close, but error margin still felt a bit too high to consider the result.
The problem is, that in case of prism and pyramid we need height, so I used vector magnitude of V1=(Barnards Loop - Sinuefe) for it, but it is a very long shot. I also tried to tetrahedron and polygon net from it, but again, without knowing how to orientate 3rd point in relation to 2 we have (Barnard and synuefe), there is no way to find coordinates. It is very likely I am overlooking something since my astronomy skills are practically nonexistant, which might be a key to proper orientation of pyramid/tetrahedron.

After doing all of this, I have a strong belief that tetrahedron net might show us the coordinates for 3 other sites. Yes, 3 other, making it 4 total, just by the number of monolith or whatever you call them, pillars that hold ancient artifact, due to tetrahedron net having 4 outer angles (including top). Three triangle formations in ruins, while not aligned perfectly, might be an indication to that too. I also think that monolith at obelisk group A is indicating the planet we are on.

Anyhow, that is some food for thought. Not much results, but at least I learned some basic functions in geogebra... Hope some astronomy adept will figure out which way to rotate the triangle, and then we can pop this cherry.

Pole star is B Centauri i believe, its static in the sky and can be used as a reference point if thats what your looking for, its about 290lys away.

So, yeah, there's an apparent massive difference between the modes. If you've not seen it yet MB,, this thread has a lot about people's experiences.

tl;dr version...
- Nobody can get more than the initial 15 obelisks to light up in solo to-date. Once scanned, they go dormant and never reactivate.
- Going to an instance in open/player groups where there's multiple (apparently, more than two) commanders around, different obelisks light up. Logging out and in again to the same group/instance (may) make more light up. Access to these different obelisks give different decoded entries.
- You can just sit in your ship with the artifacts in your hold (you don't need to be in a wing), and you'll (sometimes) receive the decoded entries when other people scan the obelisks. You could go afk like this for an hour and get a dozen-odd entries if you didn't have any initially.

There are bug reports to that effect,,, but I can't recall their links... I'll try and dig them out...

Here we go: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ks-never-reset-in-solo-alone-in-private-group

EDIT: Obviously you can't say much about it, but using open/groups players can get up to 36 decoded messages. This *appears* to be the maximum (and an idea is that there's 2 more ruins sites we haven't discovered for the other 60-odd), but only you'd know that. However, using solo you're hard-capped at only 13 decoded messages by comparison, because none of the other obelisks ever light up.

The behaviour for solo sounds correct, but the open situation sounds like it's revealing more than it should. We'll look into it, but I don't think you're missing anything that should be able to access.

Maybe we should head there? One of the first places I headed was Polaris (only to find it locked)

Side note:

OMG, just read Michael's post!!!
