So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

.
You all make good points folks, but can we get back on topic now? :)
Maybe we should start a new thread re the searching issue (unless their already is 1?).

I have just this afternoon posted some suggestions from the Canonn thread about this very topic. You could always read (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/324053-Exploration-Planetary-surface-search-improvement-requirement-amp-suggestions) & add further suggestions, then maybe pm MB & DB & Sandro to bring to their attention how strong is the feeling over this. If you want something doing you have to shout loudly & frequently

After tremendous amount of tedium, yogurt and tears, I'm happy to announce that Commander Sajime Chent-Shi of the Children of Raxxla has found the GAMMA BASE in the Formidine Rift region !

This was an enormous man-hour effort, with more that 150 hours spent searching the surface !!

FORMIDINE RIFT GAMMA MISSION 1/6
Expedition Log: 30/80/3270

Looks like I drew a short straw somewhere along the line. These long range missions pay well, but it's a year out in the void. A year ! We're out far beyond the frontier. The boys call this place the "Formidine Rift". Apparently that means "terror" in some old earth language. Nice. Just looks like more space to me.

--------

FORMIDINE RIFT GAMMA MISSION 2/6
Expedition Log: 12/09/3270

Finally arrived in place after five months of hyperspace travel. Now we have two months of laying a bunch of beacons before another five months travel back home. At least I'll have enough credits to retire by then.

--------

FORMIDINE RIFT GAMMA MISSION 3/6
Expedition Log: 18/09/3270

Supposedly there are a bunch of other ships out here doing the same job as us, but no comms allowed. All a bit strange. it's vast and lonely out here, pretty much the whole galaxy is behind us. It's getting to some of the crew.

--------
FORMIDINE RIFT GAMMA MISSION 4/6
Expedition Log: 01/10/3270

We picked up some kind of bizarre signal yesterday. Whatever it was wasn't human. At least, that's the scuttlebutt going around the decks. Everyone is looking out of the canopies now. We're seeing some strange lights during hyperspace transits. Terror ? Yeah, we got some of that ...
--------

FORMIDINE RIFT GAMMA MISSION 5/6
Expedition Log: 11/11/3270

More strange lights. We've got equipment malfunctions, scanners dropping in and out, systems restarting. Ship is limping on. Everyone wants to turn about, but if we don't complete the mission we don't get paid. No one wants to give up those credits either. You expect to turn around and see ...

--------

FORMIDINE RIFT GAMMA MISSION 6/6
Expedition Log: 29/11/3270

We're done and we're heading home. We picked up some heat signature in the last system. Definitely something there and it wasn't any profile I had seen before. Something was watching us. There's something evil out here, and it doesn't like compagny !

Congrats! :D:cool:

Ok thanks :), although I'd still like to understand how the bearing can be used to find the co-ord's

Just don't let the lat/long system overwhelm you. Flying in regular flight (at first) will make it easier to understand how the lat/long numbers change in relation to your flying, since the numbers change slower than when in SC. That would be the first step.

Then:

- Doesn't matter where you are when you get out of SC, point your ship to 0 degrees on your compass (North) and fly toward that direction
- Take a look at the lat/long numbers and notice how they change while flying in that direction. You will notice that one set of numbers changes, the other one doesn't.
- Now do a loopy loop in your ship. Keep pulling up until you find yourself flying upside down, then roll over so that you are now flying right side up and towards the opposite direction, 180 (South)
- Notice how the same set of lat/long numbers keeps changing, but now in the opposite direction, and the other one is still not?

Use this method to reach your desired latitude, say for example -34.0
Once there, change your compass heading to either 90 or 270 (on the compass) and fly towards that direction.
You will now notice that the previous set of numbers will stay still (-34.0), while the others will change instead.
Fly either 90 or 270 on your compass to get to where you want to go, say for example -77.

Once you are on the intended lat/long of -34 and -77, then fine tune your location using the same method above and to reach -34.2057, -77.6673.
After a bit of trial and error you will be able to apply the same method while in Supercruise.

Tremendous job guys! Heading over right now...

I'm just trying to find the settlement on LZ-H, & even though we have the co-ords, I just can't use them to find it.
I need (approx.) -23 & -175, I'm at -28 & -159 (which I got their by trial & error), I just don't know which way I need to point!
I think I get the bearing display now, but it doesn't help to get me there!

Ill have a go with my new knowledge! Someone correct me if Im wrong.

Latitude

Draw a planet with a line drawn all the way round it's fattest part, the equator. This is 0 Latitude.
Draw another line parallel to this but just above it. That's +1 degree. Continue drawing these lines until you get to 90 degrees. This is the North pole.
The same works below the equator, but it's 0 to -90 at which point you're at the South pole.

Longitude

Draw a line from North pole to South pole. This is 0 degrees. Draw another line slightly to the right of it and label it +1. Continue until you reach +180. You're now half way round the globe.
At this point the next line you draw will be -179. The next one -178 etc. until you get back to your starting point at 0. (On earth we use Greenwich as 0 degrees but on featureless planets it matters not)

You were at -23 latitude and below the equator (roughly a quarter of the way to the south pole) So to get to -20 you needed to be north (or up!) a little bit more. Best way is to just get that -23 heading towards -20 by turning left or right until it stats ticking down. When you get to -20 stop and level the number off.

You were at -175 longitude. If that's still going up, turn the ship around half a turn and make it count down to -159.

The problem for me is being so close to the planet is disorientating and I get lost. I think the secret is to make a mental note of the line running through the poles before you descend to make orientation a little easier.

Grats on the find. i spent only 5 days searching for this and i did search that large crater , i guess i got unlucky. Welp time for me to put elite down and come back at a time later. Best of luck guys.

He found it in the dark?! Nobody likes a show off! ;)

Well done!

Edit: flew over that crater twice,it being huge and an obvious place to check...

Congratulations CMDR!

Gamma base... This confirms it, we're looking for the smallest base (Delta) on the biggest planet (GL-Y E2 6)... Thanks FD, love you too :/
