An Explorers Open Letter to Frontier

Something as simple as a random chain of exploration targets that leads to other targets, like 20 of them maybe, leading to a fantastic discovery and reward in the end, would do the trick.

Well said.

I think that even if FDjust said Exploring would get some attention in 3.1 (or 2 or...) then this would help ENORMOUSLY release the pressure. We would stop hammering requests to FD and argue amongst ourselves about what we would like or think of doing in the "new explorer" season. And we would be able to refine and collate the ideas and present them more coherently and with more thought about pros and cons and sidethoughts at the right time for them to consider it. Because if they're 60% on 2.3 and 30% on 2.4, and this isn't coming until 3.3, we know we have a long wait.

Which, instead of complaining or badgering, we would or could use to make better ideas.

I don't actually agree with your list of things, at least not enough to say spend effort putting them in, on most of them. Some I agree wholeheartedly and some I'm thinking "bad idea", but unfortunately I can't upvote you at the moment.

So I posted a response instead. Hope it helps.

LOL "open letter"

You didn't dissapoint me either with yours ;)

OP is right - Exploration needs some love - what isn't required is an "open letter" to express ones opinions ... that just detracts from the message IMO

The entire point of the "open letter" is just to start a discussion, to prove to Frontier that I am not the only one. Sure it might detract from my original message, but if I sent them an email or even a traditional letter, I am only but one singular voice. A pinion. Im sure they'd say "Whose this guy!?" but If I can get others rallied around a cause, with enough people discussing, Surely we'd come up with an idea that Frontier Developments will notice and decide to add to the game.

Think of this Thread as more of a Protest. If we all just sat around and complained, what would that accomplish? I can say all day that something sucks, but its better to start a discussion on why it sucks and how we can fix that.

Not for me. Anyone else get triggered?

I dont get "Triggered" but I can see his point of view too. Its important, atleast here, to understand both sides of the coin. The entire purposes was to start a discussion that Frontier sees us having.

Too hard on my poor old eyes. Can the OP or someone else please paraphrase this?

TL;DR Version: Exploring Is Neglected, I feel that Frontier needs to pay attention to it. There is currently only 3 to 4 ships used by the community, and in most cases the community guts these ships of modules to make them viable for exploring. Exploring does not give any risk for reward. Nor good enough rewards in comparison to other game modes currently. I.E. what takes you hours to do in Exploring credits wise, takes 30-45 minutes to earn in a Nav Beacon (which is also boring grindy content and clearly placeholder mechanics) Its been 2 years since the launch of the game and we've seen no new tools. I wish to move Advanced Discovery Scanner, and Detailed Surface Scanner to Utility Slots instead of Optional Module Slots. I want frontier to add "Discovery Limpets" that one can shoot at unknown planetary contacts to do detailed scans. I'd like to see real world science gadgets being used for exploring in Elite Dangerous.

I hoped this helped. :)

Make Exploration Great + some ideas that have been suggested 1000 times before.

I don't disagree with the sentiment - but FD have added exploration content: there are alien ruins* to find, there's the formidine rift thing (which I know little about - apart from it's mention in Reclamation!)... yeah, they could always add more (and I hope they do!) - but there is stuff.

(*but please don't make us have to spot them visually!)

In my honest opinion, This only just "Stuff" to find. They added a few red pebbles amongst literally billions of redish orange ones. It can drive a pilot mad trying to find these things with sound and visual cues alone. We have NOTHING, other than meta-gaming like turning our graphics settings to low, to help aid our pain in sifting through the pebbles of sand.

This is what I think us explorers are doing when they add in ancient alien ruins or barnacle sites:

Except, we dont have giant combs! We're using our hands!

I agree completely with OP.

The 'Detailed Surface Scanner' right now is only a gimmick to 'tag' worlds to their discoverer's name.
It made sense on the beginning. But now, with planetary landings available, the name is just a joke.

The surface scanner should tag on the planetary map the POIs available on it, or at least, the more significant ones,
like delericts, bases, ruins, etc.

RIght now, satellites give us a great deal of information of Earth from orbit. There are spy satellites for a reason...
And space probes do the same from other planets and objects of the solar system.

That on the 33th century, with FTL ships, having to fly through the planet's surface, eyeballing for some strange dot on the surface, having to adjust the graphical settings in order to see them better just breaks the inmersion.

I've often considered going on an exploration trip but I think why bother... Planets views have been downgraded https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/252879-Planet-Surface-Graphics-are-Low-Res-Low-Detail-and-Low-Quality-(Not-Just-Ice-Worlds)-Includes-Video, the SRV scanner is bugged, driving the SRV is a pain on an icy planet and there is very little to discover that you can't discover in the bubble.

Why go to Colonia? Jump after jump with nothing more to find than you would find in the bubble. What can you do at Colonia that you can't do in the bubble? Exploration right now makes no sense.

I hadnt noticed that, and its very sad they did this. I've even noticed that planets can get really laggy depending on their surfaces though.

Well, +1 to the OP. I have to say, there isn't a single thing you raised that i disagree with. The exploration is mindnumbingly dull that i now only do two hour stints of travel before i change games so i dont get bogged down with it all.

Theres not much out in the black to keep you 'on the ball', and if you're not thinking about the task at hand, youre easily distracted and just want to neglect what your doing. Which isnt what exploration is about, you should be braving the universe, acerting dangers and laying eyes on beautiful planets or potential lands that could harness lives or commodities.

More risks are needed, more rewards would be preferable, but most of all more in-depth exploration is a must. I've seen my fair share of systems, yet i never say im an explorer because of the way elite is currently handling it.l, all im basically saying is i work a dull job.

"Move scanners to utility slots"

no. I already have to go without a KWS in order to fit both chaff and a heatsink on my Python. Now you want me to give up one of those or lose one of my two shield boosters in order to continue doing what I already do? Get out of here.

I agree 100%. Exploration needs TLC. I like the idea of an exploration ship in my fighter bay instead of a fighter. Something fast agile fun to fly and has scanners and supercruise. No weapons would be needed but the ability to deploy a srv would be handy too. I love the idea of exploration equipment on my hardpoints. I would love to see planetary book marks as well as surface nav beacons. A surface beacon another cmdr can find from orbital flight and fly toward to see the awesome view I found and scan it for a short text message I left. Engineered surface/data scanners to scan from further away or for faster scans. I could go on and on....There is tons that FDev could do here.
