Formidine Rift Delta Mission 1/6

Expedition Log: 30/08/3270
"I should have paid a bit more attention to the mission description. I just saw the credit count and signed up there and then. More money than I've ever earned and all in one go, just for taking a year out. What's a poor girl got to do? A bit of jaunt into the void, how bad could it be? Didn't read the bit about several thousand light years. I've been past Leesti before! Get rich scheme - let's go!

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 2/6

Expedition Log: 12/09/3270

"It's pretty out there, we've seen a gorgeous double nebula called Heart and Soul. You should see it, lots of bright blue stars nearby, wish we could divert to have a closer look, but our mission is beyond apparently. Really brings back how big the galaxy is. Make you feel real small and insignificant.

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 3/6

Expedition Log: 18/09/3270

"My job is the EVA. Taking out one of out two Sidewinders and dropping beacons out in the void and then making sure they are activated. Not sure what these things are for. Who needs a beacon this far out anyway? Weird, they all have this code in their BIOS - 'Exodus'. Still, at least I now have something to do. The journey was so dull! Months of travel to get here.

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 4/6

Expedition Log: 01/10/3270

"Something weird happened today. Unloaded another beacon and set it up, then everything went offline - and I mean everything! Life support too! No comms, nothing. Stayed that way for about two minutes. Then everything was back to normal. Affected our support ship too. No idea what caused it. Going to need new underwear when I get back. Rumours are there is something odd about this area of space.

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 5/6

Expedition Log: 11/11/3270

"Oh my God ... someone help me. Where are they ... please ... this can't be happening.

Formidine Rift Delta Mission 6/6

Expedition Log: 29/11/3270

"I've had time to accept it now. I went out as normal with one of the beacons, set it up. Had that weird power loss again. I waited and it all came back online like before. Signalled my support ship - no response. Flew back and it was gone, just debris. No survivors. Don't know what happened. It's just me and this crappy Sidewinder a zillion miles from home. Should have known it wasn't going to work out. If it's too good to be true.... There's an Earth-like world here, going to try and reach it ... you never know.

I think maybe these settlements in the beacon systems - the rally points - are a point on route for these missions, near their objectives that the ships of the fleet transmit their logs back to.

So where these messages suggest nearby habitable planets, it indicates we need to extend our search beyond the beacon systems and look for signs of habitation, not in the beacon systems. Satellites, more beacons (such as the ones mentioned being deployed in numerous messages), dead ships, lights on planets or more settlements would be a start.

This is all stuff rifters have been looking out for for literally years now, but we now have 3 regions of space (200 light years bubbles around the community goal target systems maybe) to search instead of the massive area that may be included in the rift.

Well Done Cmdr.

So that's three out of four missions that went missing in the Rift and there may be survivors on two earth like planets (although after 33 years it will probably be unlikely that anyone is left).

Scary.

It strikes me that there's two things of note that might help reveal areas where these missions were carried out:
Firstly, she's flying a sidewinder. Is it plausible to assume wherever she was dropping these beacons was within maximum range of this ship's drive, or is the presence of a support ship dictating mobile fuel capabilities?
Secondly, this nebula she describes must sit between the site and an eventual beacon drop

I reckon it has to be within the same system as the support ship. I don't think Sidewinders would have had jump capability 33 years ago, especially if the support ships were using older jump drives.

The in-game description for the Anaconda says that it can carry up to Sidewinder size ships. We know there was a fleet of Anacondas, so I'm not sure that the mention of the Sidewinder indicates much.

I don't get 5/6, she wrote down that weird message on the 11/11/3270... then all of a sudden eighteen days later she writes another message, as if everything is kind of normal, Saying she's heading out to an earth like world? So our next step is finding a system with this 'earth like' world.

Looking for an earth-like world would narrow our search down to the G, F & K class stars I think. There aren't many G class stars around this area, I've been to a few and couldn't see anything particularly remarkable.

Or the remains of an ELW?

So Drew is trying once again to get us to look at the mythological underpinnings of the story.
It won't work Drew, by this time tomorrow we'll be back to following pictures in the skybox ;)

However, in the brief window where we're thinking about it, I thought I'd raise what I consider to be an interesting point.

If the names of the ships are significant, that must be for one of two reasons:

1. Because the author wants us to make the connection - and they're willing to stretch the bounds of probability and coincidence in order to do so.
2. Because in-game characters, for in-game reasons, made it happen.

Personally, I hope it's option 2. because then things get really interesting...

In order for the murderous terrorist to be escorted by ships with significant names when she was 'disappeared', someone with a high level of authority within the Empire must have been aware in advance that the interception of the convoy was planned and arranged escort ships appropriately.
Since the ship names are meaningful to people trying to solve the Rift mystery, rather than the cover-up faction, it follows that the attack on the prisoner transport was performed by forces who support discovery rather than suppression.

Then we have to ask, why would any group who wants to solve the Rift mystery want Kahina dead?
The Independent Rift Explorers Alliance thinks she's a dangerous psychopath who belongs in a secure facility - but that's exactly where she was being transported and anyway, the IREA don't do the violence thing.

So, conclusions we can draw:
Kahina is alive and under the protection of a group who wish to support her efforts to uncover whatever lies in the Rift.

Thoughts: we could tie in the words Dynasty and Exodus to this, possibly along with cloning. Back to that idea that perhaps this was a break out Imp faction of some sort.

Hmm... i'm on it! At least we don't have to fly/drive around a planet for the time being :D I still don't understand 5/6 though.. that is a strange message, such a big gap in between log five and six.

Or the remains of an ELW?

Possible.. quite possible.

I reckon it has to be within the same system as the support ship. I don't think Sidewinders would have had jump capability 33 years ago, especially if the support ships were using older jump drives.

In fact, I recalled reading that exact fact - Drew's own hyperspace lore page used to say:

"In the late 3290s a fast hyperspace mechanism was perfected that immediately made the Type 2 systems obsolete. Jump times were restored to mere seconds, but the advantages of longer range jumps retained. This was based on the, previously discredited, fast jump system developed for the ill-fated starship Antares.
This new type 3 drive (or ‘Frame Shift’) was also remarkably compact, allowing for installation on vessels that had never been able to mount a hyperdrive system before, even small vessels such as Sidewinders and Eagles were now able to jump independently. By 3300 virtually all of the type 2 drives had been decommissioned, with the loss of a number of ship classes that could not be retrofitted with the new systems due to design constraints."

However, that paragraph has recently been changed:

"In the late 3290s a fast hyperspace mechanism was perfected that immediately made the Type 2b systems obsolete. Jump times were restored to mere seconds, but the advantages of longer range jumps retained. This was based on the, previously discredited, fast jump system developed for the ill-fated starship Antares. By 3300 virtually all of the type 2b drives had been decommissioned, with the loss of a number of ship classes that could not be retrofitted with the new systems due to design constraints."

So we should probably assume that this sidewinder has jump capability...

But this was 33 years ago, with Type 2b drives, not the FSDs taht we use now which weren't invented until 3290.

This! They also left a cloud behind if i remember rightly... cant quite remember how long this "cloud" stays behind though. Probably long gone by now.

That reads to me like Sideys didn't have jump capability before FSDs.
