So just remove any benefit to the exploration rank from mission value & problem solved, surely?
Yes and add a 'bus driver' rank. Since ranking does show nothing other than someone dedicated a lot of time into an activity and the ranks impacts nothing, the discussion is obsolete - unfortunately.

Literally this game seems full of people who want other people to abide and or play the way "they" feel other people should.
Well, I'm not sure how full, but there is definitely an amount. It's hard to tell some apart since many will say they don't care how you play while trying to maintain that the developers should change it to something that suits their ideals better.

not again.

Yes, I see that the exploration experience points you get from sightseeing missions are about a factor of 10 too high.
BUT, they get me at least some money and some experience toward exploration rank and were the ONLY argument for me to even try them out!

I think they monetary requirement for Elite rank in Exploration should be raised from 150 million to 600 million. And the scan data rewards should be like wise quadrupled. The Passenger Mission rewards should probably also be cut by 30-50%. At this point there will be a balance between the reward from normal exploration and running passenger missions.

Your're serious?
At Trading or Combat or Missions you normally can get from 5M to 15M per hour. These Passanger missions got me best case 6M per hour (even mostly 4M/h) and you want them cut them again?
I've actual a bit more time to play, are allied with many sub-factions in my home system, have my TouringCruiser equipped with 7 cabins,...

Well sightseeing mid to long range can have anywhere from 1 - 15 million payout per mission. 156.5 million is Exploration elite. So yeah, it's doable if you stack 'em right and do nothing else I suppose. And ofc I'm not counting the actual exploration money you get from honking between your sightseeing stops.

... but getting mostly 200k - 4M credits missions with the occasional 9 or even 12 M missions once a day/evening/play session.
7 Missions for me translate mostly to 20-30M credits and therefore 10-15% Pioneer-to-Elite-Rank.
As I'm now indeed a bit interested in the lore info these missions give or the interesting sights they provide, I usually need 5-7 hours from first aquiring to cashing in.

Before all these missions (and the exploration rank increase) I never was interested in exploration.
Now I am.

You should not always see the negatives especially when that doesn't hurt you in your game play!

Even within a few days according to some, maybe over a weekend. I wouldn't know for sure since I don't care to test it out and have too high of a rank to effectively do so anyway.

Cheesy crisps. I have done a few passenger missions over the last few days and did notice my exploration was higher than I was expecting. Put it down to a few decent worlds in my last trip. I feel kinda bad for doing the missions now. The cap certainly needs to go up if we're getting 5mil a pop for easy exploration stuff.

I agree with the sentiment but wouldn't that mean explorers would have to do passenger missions to get the rank they deserve? As an Explorer, I personally do not want to be a taxi driver, although I welcome the addition to the game.

That's a VERY good point. Passenger exploration missions would probably have to have a set cap on increase OR make exploration pay more in general

No I don't think so. Looks like a bug. I presume you don't have to play 20 hours a day in that week though to gain it.

I hadn't heard of this until now. I do find it a shame that bugs like this pop up ripe for 'exploit'. I get that bugs will happen but the ones that lead to more of X quickly (Fill yer boots bugs) are particularly disappointing to me. I'm sure some players love it though.

You make that seem like a bad thing ;)

I posted earlier a description of how the rank works. It's not based on time, it's based on quantity and quality of data sold, which I think is fair enough. The mission payouts detract from that, but I do like the motivation they provide to get out there & see what there is to see.

Combat rank isn't based on money, it's purely on kills (with a multiplier depending on rank), I see Exploration working in a similar way (ie it's based on the amount of data with a multiplier based on quality).

For Trade rank it's about profit so I can see some logic to including certain mission payouts in that.

In a Tourism systems they are a lot more abundant, so you get some higher payouts and number of missions. And how long it takes to do them completely depends on your ship. My Conda has a range of 29ly right now, I did a 57, 90, 220 round trip in around 2 hours. That included stopping for 2 tons of coffee that the CEO wanted and me stopping in systems to go out of my way and detail scan every gas giant I came across. I have absolutely no problem with the current payout at all, but a safe convenient stroll through the bubble shouldn't account more for my exploration rank then a 1200ly trip to the Witch Head nebula and back, using economy route to scan the systems I fancy. The only thing I see that needs adjusting is how much you get towards your next rank, not how much they pay you if you do your job right.

Why not? If someone has flown the required number of systems or distance or whatever is required within a week what's the problem? It's only a badge anyway if that's you're end goal then the game is going to be pretty thin up top for you.

Literally this game seems full of people who want other people to abide and or play the way "they" feel other people should.

Did you even read the OP? You don't have to do ANY exploration to get Elite explorer. Literally, NOTHING AT ALL. You just have to drag some tourists about for a bit. If you could get Elite combat without shooting a single ship don't you think people would be a little bit ANNOYED with that? Here's a clue: They would be. And something would be done about it, but hey this is exploration so who cares.

But exploration rank is meaningless. Just like the trade and combat ones are. They are a cumulative statistic. Nothing more.

It doesn't mean anything more than "I scanned x amount of y and made z credits - horray I am elite!".

It's never meant anything and cannot mean anything if it's cumulative, rather than representative. The latter meaning the title refers to competency, versus completion.

tl;dr - problem isn't the ranking; it's that the gameplay is so hysterically shallow, as to make the cumulative total meaningless; give it meaning, or move on.

It would be nice if it could be dynamic.

That is, it can be LOWERED as well.

Right now it's used as a basis for missions but should not our ranks be LOWERED if we:

- Fail in a mission
- Die in combat

After all, our reputation can take a hit if we fail a mission, why not the galaxy's view of our overall competence if we fail multiple times?

Wooly wording on poll.

A week is 168 hours. That doesn't sound too unreasonable to get one elite ranking.

"Within a couple days" may have been more accurate, as has been purported by some.

I tend to play fairly leisurely myself in general though. Six of one and a half dozen of the other.

I voted no.

Does it really matter how quickly someone is able to get something? Does it bruise your ego that much? Does if affect your gameplay in any way, shape or form?

As someone else has said: 'If you want a badge, fine, have a badge. If you want to explore IMO you will anyway.'

:D

The original concept worked well, it's biggest flaw was neutron farming & even they you have to travel 10kLy there, be bored for a week or so then travel 10kLy back so even doing that was a fairly committed task.

So just remove any benefit to the exploration rank from mission value & problem solved, surely?

Eh, I actually think passenger sightseeing missions giving some exploration rank is a cool idea, similar to how driving the SRV and collecting materials provides rank progression. The problem is that sightseeing missions simply provide FAR too much as it currently is. It’s unbalanced and extremely out of whack with the rest of the system’s rewards.

Like I’ve said before, reducing the rank contribution by a factor of 10 would seem to fix it right up, which greatly implies the possibility that there is simply a decimal point in the wrong place somewhere in the code of the 2.2.03 update, because this wasn’t the case in the 2.2 update. So either it’s a bug, or Frontier intended to greatly increase sightseeing mission rank contributions far and away above all other means of gaining Elite Exploration rank.

I tested a couple of missions, which resulted in bus driving essentially. But I will give it try again.

I presumed a successful completion of the activity. Rank doesn't count efficiency or skill, hence it doesn't matter if someone made a million in easy kills or only by killing elite wings. Given enough time, everyone can archive Elite rank. Same is with exploration and trading. In general I do like exploration missions, too.

Again so what? what's distance have to do with exploring? Christ we still have places on this planet that haven't been explored but hey if someone explores it let's just say "dude , you've only explored this once, you need to travel back and forward at least 2000 times before I even give you props. Did the player go to somewhere he hasn't been before doing this easy mission because I think you'll find that's called exploring.

I Imagine Sir Ranulph Fiennes would likely beat you around the head with a frozen block of Polar Bear turd if you came out with that to him.

Nope, there is very little else in this game where you can do two "career paths" at once, i.e. mining whilst having a decent PvE setup to fight for yourself, so it's not right that someone taking a passenger to one place far away gets the same rank as someone who spends a lot of time out of the bubble mapping unfound planets and moons

168 hours is a lot but that isn't what I took the OP to mean. If you say to someone at work "it'll take a week" you mean 5 working days. In this case you could stretch that to include the weekend but you still need to sleep, eat, empty the bins etc.

At least I do.

Even this depends. When I say to some, I get this work done by Wednesday next week, it could be I have to work 5 days fulltime for it, or it only is a 5 Minutes Job but depends on someone, who only comes Tuesdays to office...
