Two reasons why single player is more attractive than multi-player to me

You can say that again. I'm so far up the **** end of the world, no PvP could ever be fun. Even in ideal conditions, last mile ADSL routers (be glad it's not ISDN or PSTN) overheat in the summer, reboot every other minute, drop packets, etc.

I have no choice in the matter — ED will have to be single-player for me.

Not necessarily.

Of course the game can't do much if your internet itself is flaky, but one of the things coming relatively soon (tm) is geo-instancing and matchmaking. With that, you will be matched to people close to you geographically to help minimise ping times and latency. So, with luck, your game may not be held up by having to synchronise a player that's on the other side of the world to you.

Remember that the game is really being designed as a "play with your mates" kind of multiplayer, rather than an MMO in the traditional sense. The theory goes that your mates will live relatively close by.

Except that worked in no game ever. From a design perspective, you either provide an effective toggle (like most "mainstream" MMOs), a way to play in your own universe without any non-consensual interaction whatsoever (lobby games, UO), or you go full grief and just roll with your game being a cesspit (EVE). Any "self-policing" mechanisms will be subverted by players in the never-ending quest to screw with other people's fun.

The moment you called EVE a cesspit you lost all credibility, with respect a 9 year PVE and exploration centric veteran of EVE.

Try doing it as a new player, without a huge ISK wallet or well established Corp.

I am hoping that ED will be a bit more open to new players and a lot less of the "it's a sandbox so you must let people grief you".

Have also played Defiance which for all it's faults does seem to have a good co-operative Multiplayer where you can casually join up and fight the NPCs but you are not forced to. Similarly it does have PvP but only where both sides want it.

And no I haven't paid my 100GBP yet and probably won't until I see how the game evolves, but did get to Deadly on the BBC B, so really do want to see this game become what it could be.

I am part of a small group in EVE , barely a dozen strong and we had fun more than most people in large alliances and my wallet has never blinked above 2bil isk while the richest of our little group floats that often he usually runs most of the ops going on and takes the largest risks.

Oh and this group formed up in late 2011 until then I bounced around more than flubber so tell me more how you know how to have fun without waving around expensive ships...curious to see your KB now.

In EVE? Easy. Buy a Trasher, kit it out as a PvP tackler and find a hi sec asteroid belt. Watch the Ventures scramble for safety, it's like running through a swarm of pigeons.

Cheap as, and fun like very little else.

Wonder how that works out vs a butt lovin venture ( there were quite a few PvP fits for it, think PL even managed some interesting kills with it when it was new).

We did in fact do that as well, take a gang of ventures out. At least 1 of them would actually be mining, the rest would just be waiting for fools in Trashers...

Easiest targets for that are leftover Goons after attacks on Jita or whatever else they came up with.

I once did a spot of miner protection ( randoms, fleets so I could ass ram can flippers or the odd banker )...it ended with a pre-rebalance hulk ripping the ass out of a geddon trying to whack it and me just ****ting myself laughing...
