News 2.3 Dev Update

Couple more thoughts - NPC multicrew, no idea why is that not possible AT LEAST for NPC to take over the Helm and Commanders to assume one of the roles. There can't be technical difficulties, as that is already in the game (SLF).

So... I can hire a crewman and let him pilot my ship, while I telepresence to a fighter, but I can't let him pilot my ship when I telepresence to the turret station? And vice versa - I can allow my crewman pilot a fighter, but he is unable to take position on the turret station and grant the me the extra pip for use?

This is completely illogical and I see no viable explanation for this restriction whatsoever. It also gives an advantage to the Commanders with friends (tiny, fair enough, but still) in combat. I don't really care how other play their game, unless it has an effect on my gameplay. And this is the latter.

::EDIT::

The advantage is actually quite big if we take 1 ship with 2 fighters, but only NPC crew vs 1 ship with 2 fighters and Cmdr crew.

They got ship launched fighters and passenger missions.

The only horizons only content is landing on planets, engineers and the beluga.
Ship launched fighters is horizon and passangers was a 1.X feature apart from the VIP missions

I have to say, I don't think I've ever been this disappointed with update news before.

Practically everything I've dreamed of doing with multicrew—long range group expeditions, stranded SRV rescues, basically anything with any substance whatsoever—none of it is possible with this.

They're doing exactly what I feared they would: shallow, instant transport for nothing more than a quick little boost in combat.

Sad.

Wings isn't instant handwavium God mode and I get to pilot my own ship while in a wing with friends. There's a difference.

Losing to a wing: hey they outnumbered me.

Losing to a single ship granted uber mode simply for putting butts on seats: not cool.

But single ship won't be as effective as wing of ships.

I understand your concern, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet.

Anything you described would require full fledged space legs. Not saying it should make it better...but it gives context.

I love elite , I love it so much.

But sometimes I feel that FD want to make the most simplistic game possible.

Explorers need more content.

Emmmm....I am sysadmin and server developer and I think you misunderstood me. NPCs are well defined term for AI code which imitates some artificially created character in-game.

In context of our posts is this - NPCs will still have co-pilots as before, but they won't have additional NPC crew members - most likely for now. I suspect if they will manage to add additional roles for NPC crew for commanders to hire, we might see them added to NPC ships too.

Well, the NPC controlled ship (the AI controlled ship) does not need any other NPC (or AI) crew members. Those computer generated and controlled entities (objects with programmed behavior) are not "living" in the game context. They do not need to refuel, buy ammo, use fuel scoops, they do not really trade and/or mine and they do not have any problems with possible rebuy screen.
So, it is absolutely redundant to talk about NPC ships with NPC crew members. It can be simply called "slightly better AI" like was in 2.1.

I sincerely hope this mean that we'll be getting 3rd person combat... that could be game AMAZING!

So...

This release offers absolutely nothing to the trader/explorer/miner

This release offers absolutely nothing to the solo/not-so-social player.

This release introduces powerleveling in the most atrocious manner. AFK 17 draconis, Robigo, Sothis, CZs, skimmers anyone?

I have a question. If FD want to create a long lasting fan playerbase, how do they plan to do it if they keep showing the middle finger to a major part of the players?

Why they don't listen and pay attention to what people says on the forum?

I was expecting some kind of defensive role too. As in "aiming" or diverting the shield energy to a specific fraction of the ship's surface. Another missed opportunity.

I was thinking of controlling the 'shield focus' to absorb incoming fire like the way you block beats with Audioshield:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v24wmuoMPog

I'm guessing that these were the simple roles to implement, and hope we'll get more later (esp. Navigation type ones)

I have another question - if I'm wearing a VR hat and get up and wander around, will the other players see my character wander around the bridge/cockpit?

Have a look at the way this multicrew coop sub sim is doing it:

Questions:

1) so no Engineering seat huh? Seems like a huge lost opportunity... No Scotty to Bridge banter :(. No increasing forward deflectors. No one handling module repairs midcombat. Etc.

Yes, a defensive Engineering seat could be as busy in combat as a gunner.

And some questions of my own:

4) Could the Helm choose to delegate access the galaxy map and set the ship's next jump target to crew while they fuel-scoop aggressively? Would be helpful for explorers in a hurry to be somewhere.

5) What happens if a Wanted commander joins my crew and the ship is scanned by authority or bounty hunters? Is my ship now Wanted? Is it prosecuted as aggressively as a wanted passenger is now?

6) SRV crewing. Please?

7) Are earnings just trivially multiplied whilst crewed or split according to some activity metric during a kill? Multiplication feels a bit Monty Haul to me.

8) Extra pips for all feels artificial. If the concern is to allow crewmembers to be able to shoot at all times, why not reserve them a pip from the main pip pool that they control?

9) Will Commander Creator avatars feature in Wanted notices? Be a shame to work up a rad look and be the only one able to admire it.

10) How will the Helm be able to see what the Gunner is doing? Consider a trojan Gunner who refuses to fire. Will it be easy to detect this?

11) Will there be new Player Journal events for Multicrew join/leave/role change events?

12) What will crew be able to do while the ship is docked?

13) Will the 'looking for ship' lobby still be available whilst on board a ship? Will it have language flags/regional settings so I only get crew I can communicate with?

14) Since vouchers etc are multiplied among crewpersons, will bounties accrued but not 'taken away' by departing crew all be assigned to the Helm?

15) As Multicrew may expand our friends lists, will the friends list be improved? Eg with the ability to group friends, or to tag or annotate them? Half the time I forget what interaction caused me to add CMDR Xyzzy to the friends list, and then the player goes and wipes save and becomes CMDR Plugh and I have no idea at all who they are now.

I guess that not allowing others to crew the Helm is to prevent ace pilots selling their skills for real moneys to 'level my ship in a RES while I sleep' (with that added frisson of not knowing if they will log out leaving you with 1s of oxygen 1000LS from any station.).

I sincerely hope this doesn't mean that we'll be getting 3rd person combat... that could be game breaking.

I think so: " Using a third person interface, they control a reticule that all turrets within their arc will automatically follow; giving them improved spatial awareness and easy control of all turreted weapons."

I hope they'll explain why a a crew can fly two fighters but my npcs can't.

And I really, really hope that with 2.3 my slf co pilot will appear sitting next to me in my conda

You have access on full list of 2.3 features I assume then? :)

Also being in multicrew how it is powerleveling? I assume to collect bounties you will have to take actual part in action (as with Wings).

Which as might be hull camera which shows overview of outside view, without allowing to move it much outside boundaries.

This dev update really shows why FD should have gone for 'space legs' before implementing multicrew.
With walking around we could have had things like damage control or ship boarding.

I hoped we would have gotten things like directional shields, so that one player could switch shield strenght to different parts of the ship.
Outside of combat it would have been nice to see a role of navigator, with access to the galaxy map and the ability to set destinations.

It's all combat and ease of access I read. I didn't back this game for ease of access. I backed it for space exploration and adventure.
So much potential.

So...

This has to be said, countless times. Let's hope we're only witnessing the beginning of all this and that you will consider other options quickly. Eagerly waiting the streams for such answers.

How does human multicrew instant transfer work in the Elite universe lore? Telepresence?
Will this open another can of worms just like instant ship transfer?

I would prefer Commanders gather at stations to multicrew my ship, but hey that just my opinion.
The lock on ships to not allow other players to multicrew is a neat idea, I'll be using this feature.
Will wait for NPC multicrew instead.

Looking forward and interested in the commander creator though, sounds like fun.

Keep in mind the way it's been outlined currently you are open to being griefed like never before. Random CMDR drops into your ship. Random CMDR says he'll play nice. Random CMDR opens fire on security ships and civilian ships with your guns and kills them thus earning both of you bounties except that he can opt out of the bounty entirely upon exiting your ship. You get stuck with the bounty on your head.

Also Random CMDR says he'll play nice, then shoots at a station as you are docking. Station blows you up and you have to eat a reduced rebuy but a rebuy none the less.

Not so rosy now huh?

There will probably have to be a failsafe against that. I'd suggest a 15 second window before security response and a warning, applicable only to multi-crewed ships. That should give the captain sufficient time to boot the griefer.

Its just semantics, call it the major feature of the release if you want. It's the same really.

I will explain powereleveling. One guy does all the work in stacked CZ missions while his buddies are afk getting zillions of credits.

I hope I'm totally wrong on everything, though. I really do.
