Building the game around NOT walking!

I'm looking forward to Drew's book.

Cmdr Tele-presence solved the mystery of the Rift, meanwhile 32 minutes later, 10,000LY away he was part of a crew that wiped out the first Thargoid Battleship.

Of course lore matters.

Simon

Exactly, i wonder how much of his book will deal with this? If lore does not matter, why should i invest in any of the extras like Drew's book?

Apologies if it came of slightly agitated. I do believe that we will get Space legs eventually, however unlike the things that they had made prior. The introduction of space legs is a large enough workload to make an entirely new game and looking through their catalogue of previously released game, they have no First person system experience, which doesn't make the implementation any easier.

That being said, I do hope that is being added sooner, rather than later, because I agree with the main point that it makes these weird, half-solutions that might have to be reworked when that system is finally implemented.

Try and Google "The Outsider", then you will see that FD have experience in FPS and also the Planet Coaster game has elements of persistent, world building which can deliver the various environments needed for space legs

Are we running before we can walk?

NOT being able to walk, and building the game up without this feature is making less and less sense and creating weirder work-arounds, such as tele-presence.

It seems to be really inefficient, how much of the game will have to be re-made once we can walk?

THIS!!! Telepresence is a cop-out and an easy fix. Stop implementing it and putting yourself into more tricky situations later FDev.

I love this game, I play it all the time. But I can't help but think that the immersion, lore and story of the game are it's weakest areas.

They're not developing telrepresence. Not even to the extent as with the SLF where they record a "Initialising telepresence" message.

Walking around is not the game content, it connects the gameplay parts. In my opinion it can be added after enough other content is added. Until that happens all it takes is to pretend the CMDR is walking around, we just don't see it.

We also don't see our commander pooping. Or phoning their family.

Heck, we didn't even see the prequel where this dude learned how to fly a spaceship. Or learned how to read and write.

Well...I am kind of glad that "space legs" will be the very last thing added to the game. And even if FD decided to not add them I would not be too disappointed. I do want them added eventually but I can live without them. The focus should be on piloting space vehicles and "space legs" should be see as a bonus, not a requirement. Right now we can easily transfer to mothership to SRV or SLF, also CQC arena. Later on with 2.3 transferring to other commanders ships. But what I would definitely like added is for NPCs to be walking around the ship, repping things, switching seats, boarding the ship, VIPs doing tours bothering the flight crew, ect.

To be honest, considering the dev resources required to gameplay ratio for space legs, I wouldn't mind if they suspended them practically indefinitely. There's almost nothing that couldn't be done with space legs that couldn't be done much more efficiently by other methods, methods that are either much simpler by design or are able to share development resources with other gameplay facets to save resources.

I'm starting to suspect we may never get to walk outside our ships.

For example where is the door in your SRV?

It's pretty obvious they got the priorities in the development all wrong. It has been years, everyone is saying this. But no, telepresence here, inconsistencies there, everything is going good.

I'm really curious to see the commander creator, yesterday's post was so stingy about it that seems like it even got less development attention than multicrew. Which it's hard to believe because multicrew is as barebone and pathetically slim as it can get.

The sides of the SRV likely open out. There's a warning message "WARNING Open in emergency only" on both sides of the cockpit.

Why are you obsessed with trolling commanders over this game. They know we are not talking about real life, but you seem to be confused. I will enlighten you, they know it is a game, and they are here discussing their hopes (and fears) regarding it. How is this too much for you to understand?

latest

I guess we've to stick with that...

Yeah but i think i am not crossing any forum lines when i say people who wanted to name their ships are just role play babies who cry about "mu mersion" before they get their Rusk. Amirite lol?

There is a great clip from Game of Thrones about naming swords that I could link here but it won't survive moderation. For anyone with a good memory, it involves Arya and the Hound. :D

OH i see you got the hint!

Imagine now that everything that we are granted for will have to walk for it... did you imagined?

NOW imagine the forum a day after that....

Yeah i see you got the point...

The problem is not the game... but the players...

relax , he is a farmer.. a rage farmer... not like us salt farmers... the last guy who said he was a trol got moderated by that :) so i'd use some restriction talking to him....

Unfortunately, this is exactly what I thought when I heard "telepresence".

I would have made a thread, but didn't feel like risking flak. Thanks for taking the bullet OP.

I think "space legs" is on the bottom of the dev list. If it's on at all.

That's a real shame.
I really hope you are wrong.
That it's at least on the next 3.0 level.

Let us pray!

I'm starting to suspect we may never get to walk. Given the hard time frontier has creating something more than a turret control (recycled SRV feature I i should guess) for multi-crew... First person walking and controls might be the end of the world.

the problem is not the devs but the community it self... just imagine the forums after the day 1 of the change :)

"MAH CR/HR got cutten in half"

"why do i need to hand bounties by walking, arent we at 3333, where is internet"

"why do i need to walk to the SRV?"

"why do i need to walk to my other ship?"

and on and on and on ...

You must be a time traveler... either that or you know this community very well....lol

I've been worried about this ever since we got the blacked out transition screen for SRVs. At this rate walking around in your ship will be a cosmetic add-on that ends up being tacked on as a timesink that will be ignored/bypassed in combat. I kind of doubt that we'll even ever get seating animations. And moving about the ship will be a blacked out cutscene where we instantly appear in the different rooms. Likewise at stations.

I'm thinking spacelegs are going to be wasted effort. An optional setting that puts you at a competitive disadvantage.

And since Frontier don't seem to be considering the impact of telepresence on Space Legs, then they must be several years into the future. Far enough that they ignoring the consequences of setting up instant gratification when moving about a ship, or the galaxy. Space (snail) Legs will seem like a functional downgrade.
