how to find ELW's

I am on my first trip out to Colonia. Almost there and hoping to find an ELW. No luck so far. Is there any kind of method to increase chances of finding one or is it just luck?

You can improve your chances by setting filters on your galmap to F or/and G stars and dont forget to check "apply filter to route planner" option. F and G stars have highest probability of ELW's. After that, try to sacrifice a goat to RNGod.

i have set filter to G stars only, because these have smaller habitational zone (from 300Ls to 900) than F stars. There will be many of these G stars on your route to Colonia, so you dont have to be affraid you will miss something.

someone created habitable zone maps for some star types.

Theoretically, Elws can be found around any star, though it's much more likely to find them around main sequence ones (O.B.A.F.G.K.M). There's a forum user, Ziljan, who has avert useful tool link in his signature for determining habitable zones for different star classes it you have trouble eyeballing them after a scan. Can't temper the link myself unfortunately.

Hope that helps a little.

You rang?
Take a look at the List of Earth-like worlds, especially the Google Sheet. TChecking the frequencies on the list, you'll notice that generally, A and F give you the best chances, especially coreward. However, with A stars, you'll only want A7-A9. (See the exact star type on the galaxy map.) These are followed by K, then G. But if you want to maximise your chances, I'd recommend setting it to F only. Star density in that area is high enough that the route planner should still spit out a mostly straight line.
I would otherwise recommend against filtering though, because you never know what rare kind of ELW you might pass up on.
The vast majority of ELW-s found to date are around F,A,K,G,M,NS (neutron star) stars, in descending order. Take a look at the "By Star Class" and "By Luminosity" subsheets, you'll see what I mean.

Good luck with finding one! (And two, and three, and...)

it's jackie silvers sig you are looking for:

"Do try my Hab-Zone Calculator"

lot's of good information. Thank you guys. I will read up on the habitable zone etc.

One more question
Looking at the system map a water world looks pretty much the same as an ELW. That is fine. But is it possible that an ELW does not look like the typical ELW in the System Map and only way of finding out is actually scanning it?
In VR listening to the planet sounds is not really an option. It drives me crazy and I can hardly distinguish the different sounds.

BTW, I love the trip so far

Just about any star has a *chance* at one...even a black hole, I would say A8, A9, and F0-F4's for highest probability.

If you can't hear the sounds, (and can't hear the bird song) you have to pick them out visually...little specs of golden brown kinda pop out of the blue when it's an ELW.

but in the system map it always blue plus something, isnt it. Dumb question for the King of ELW's, sorry [smile]

You can just make out the golden colored specs in this one....there is a water world to the right...and a HMC to the left...picking them out visually is hardest way. It really helps to have the audio to confirm. I actually know whether I have one now before the system map even opens due to the delay involved if one is present.

I really really need to sit down and write a guide on how to find these damn things...lol

You mean the green patches, which are the landmasses? If you see their colour as gold, you might want to calibrate your screen.

Also, to dape: bear in mind that in some rare cases, the light of the star alters the colour of the planet, especially when viewed. The best examples are carbon stars: for example, see this one. More commonly encountered are ELW-s around dwarf stars (M, L, T and technically Y) which'll have a reddish hue. If you're unsure, it's best to zoom in.

Jackie was kind enough to let me pinch some of the code so if you have EDDiscovery you can even get the habitable zone displayed over the top of the game as you scan stars.

OK i have it, how do i do the Habitable bit then please.

F0? I'm obviously hugely missing something here. What is F0?
