Two quotes from CR, the first 2014 and the second 2016:

As a revenue source it makes sense. If you can sell JPEGs of non-existent ships, imagine offering to sell real-estate on a specific planet immediately after revealing a 'dev-version' of a tropical region of an ELW. Sure, it will be a few 'months' before the players can go there, but you can already order the best/beautiful/a-list/super-VIP regions now! Because we WILL deliver the gameplay, but if you wait for that all you'll be able to get is a dirty shack on a dusty ball of rock.

Ach yeah you're not wrong there. What's set off the new chat though?

Nice reminder of how blatant it was too considering all the recent push about how good value SC is ("Just $45 and you get everything!" etc. lolz)

They're really reaching the end of the rope...

Its mostly the statement that Sq42 needs to sell well (and somewhat soonish) to fund SC. Even among SC fans its being more and more doubted that that will actually happen. So either SC goes bust, or CIG needs to find more money. Going to publishers aint an option. Borrowing more is going to be problematic. They cant keep pushing ships. So something new and fresh is needed, and this might be it as it speaks to many people on a fairly emotional level. Remember SC isnt as much about being a pilot as its about being a dude in the future, who just happens to have a spaceship. Having a virtual Trump Tower overlooking some central hub is what many would pay a great deal of money for.

There's very little doubt CIG will tap into 'pay for' features. They have promised to sell credits after all.

I'm just going to remember that Derek said too that Ali B had left the company last year. It's funny that the "proof" is that Ali B posted with his account, and saying what he says xD.

Mindblowing logic

Well Ali B said he left the company not Derek. You can't really fault Derek for Ali B changing his linkdin account to saying he left CIG.

Sure you can — you're just not thinking like a citizen. Everything is Derek's fault, remember? Chris said so in that letter he took 8 hours to write in response to an article that had nothing to do with Derek.

I forget that CIG and their fans are in this bizarro world were CIG are not held accountable for anything they say or do. And CIG's past is always changing.

…speaking of which.

Does anyone here remember at what point in the proceedings Star Marine was added to the project?
For bonus points: does anyone remember if CIG has at any point addressed the problem that someone else owns the Star Marine trademark?

Thank you for reminding me how do I think or what I believe. I had forgot about it.

Oh look. It seems they simply quietly threw money at the problem. :D
The backers will never know.

I wonder how much :)

If I were the prior owner getting emails from CIG's counsel begging you to sell up - it'd be a "well lets start at 25 million, and I'm being generous about even considering it!"

Considering the dates and the apparent length of process involved, I'm guessing he could be pretty mean to them just to make sure it happened in time just before SM went live. :D

That said, I can't find a new registration on a quick search, so maybe he can score two for the price of one… or well, the opposite, I suppose. e: Never mind – found it, filed Feb 29 '16; published Jan 31 '17… so almost a year of negotiations, most likely.

Odd how you are the one that accused Derek, and were wrong. You seem to have a short memory. Why do CIG's fans spend so much time trying to rewrite history.

am I right in saying CR has said in no uncertain terms that everything in the game which can be purchased with real money can be purchased with in game currency too... its just using real cash is a way to support the game?

of course it all depends on the cost.... but I have no issue with it taking 500 in game hrs to be able to get the funds to afford one of the larger ships, or 200 hrs to afford a larger hanger.

like ED, assuming SC is good (and it if isn't I do not care as I won't be playing it for more than a few hrs anyway) then I am in it for the long haul anyway, and actually if that means 3 years of my gaming time to get to the "best" stuff, I am actually ok with that that....

but then truth is, I was happy with ED 1.0 money earning levels too ;)

IF SC is too much P2W then the outcry will be such that the game will fail. I think CIG/RSI will be aware of this. Even F2P games like say war thunder dont take the urine too much on your time... sure I HAVE kicked in 20 quid to support the game, but all of my planes have been unlocked via in game progression aside from a few I bought and dont actually fly.

I have lots of issues with SC, but these are mechanical and VR related... them selling stuff for real cash, honestly I am fine with... .so long as you CAN get them in game.

CR has said many, many things in no uncertain terms. Yet here we are, guessing how it may or may not end up. Rather than, you know, playing the game and seeing for ourselves.

In this case its about balance. SC needs money, so they need new players. New players will not be stuck in the starting ship for 100 hours. But people paid very much for their ships, so make it too accesible and the old guard will freak out.

Question: how much 'backer money' shouldyou be able to earn per hour? What would be fair? Remember people paid $1000 for one ship, and CR said in no uncertain terms the ships will be made much more expansive after release. So how many thousand hours?

Food for thought...

What interests me is how insurance/buyback will work.

A big thing seems to be the whole LTI business (even though this doesn't include modules, but whatever). People have paid a premium so that their ship doesn't get wasted.

How will buyback work for ships bought with in-game currency? What overhead is there for replacing the ship that cost ~500hr of grind? A percentage seems sensible, but I'll lay my popcorn in for the arguments!

And, fwiw, this is still what I would call a pay-to-win situation, but we all know that SC isn't pay-to-win. [hehe]
