How would you fit all that beard into a space helmet?
Curl around your neck much like a friendly SpaceLoach?

I don't have a real issue with it and I like to be immersed. There really is no reason why you can't create your character the way you want him/her and then leave it and only use the holome for different clothing.
Also if you get bored of the look, it means you don't have to wipe your save to change your appearance. Look how things are moving know with cosmetic surgery and gender changes, what will it be like in a thousand years time?
Probably a very simple procedure to change your facial shape and gender. Our medical suite in our ships could probably do that.
But I also I want to point out that this is *first* version of commander creator. It is even pre-beta. I expect more of hairdos coming later down the road.
Oh this is familiar ...
"don't worry guys .. it's pre-alpha .. more content will be added in another patch"
"don't worry guys .. it's beta .. more content will be added in another patch"
"don't worry guys .. it's pre-release ... more content will be added before launch date"
Unless something is said then nothing will be added at all .. it's FD's MO - placeholders.
Thankfully FD (Ed) has said in this thread that he will take it to the Devs.
So it nutshell it is how our commander looks in real life? So we just don't have context about why we are able to change our appearance on the fly? (t.i. it is just a game)?
Also I am curious how it ties into future content. I understand dress up changes, or hairdos. But changing your appearance on the fly all the time feels not very ....persistent for you as character. How it impacts commander when it walks around?
I hope you will have good way to explain it![]()
Hi everyone,
We really want to give you as many options as possible when creating characters. Unfortunately long hair is something we are unable to support from a technical standpoint.
Creating realistic looking long hair that behaves credibly both in normal gravity and in zero g, would take a lot of time and resources that we felt were better spent elsewhere.
It simply wouldn't have hit the quality bar that we want to achieve with everything we put in to Elite Dangerous.
From a lore perspective, a lot of spacers would have short hair to fit within their helmets, and to behave in zero g so they don't have their vision blocked.
That said we would like to add further styles in future releases that convey pinned-up hair, or long hair tied back.
Also - In the current build both genders have a pony tail, and there is a shoulder-length bob for females.
Thanks.

Yeah, I guess most players will not touch it too much, especially if/when your face becomes a somewhat prominent representation of your self in the game world. I don't really give much of a damn either way, be it only selectively available or always just a button press away. It's not something that actively interferes with gameplay.Yeah, I guess so. I thought about it for 5 minutes and figured out I really don't care that much about giving option to change appearanceI will do my best look for first try and most likely just slightly modify it when needed.
Thank god, a straight up answer about a feature that isn't boat-anchored and keelhauled by some fairy nonsense like Telepresence.
Speaking of which could you please revise that statement about multicrew to be more technical and redact any mentioning of Telepresence? It's done nothing but castrate any real conversation surrounding the topic.
I don't think your exactly right in terms of a lore perspective, we've seen enough times in the books etc that this is not the case, they would act as nessassary to keep their hair out of the way such as by the use of nets and skull caps etc.
Honestly Ed, I would rather you clarify that with say, Mr Brookes or the official writers for elite's books for example.
Liqua, I love to argue with you but this is .
Having 1.0 for certain feature is NOT a placeholder. It is 1.0.
Do commander avatar creator is placeholder? Where it stops to be placeholder? When you can do full plastic surgery in real life?
Give a break. Ed already pointed out technical limitations of long, free floating hairs. Everything else is debatable.
Looking on the bright side, at least that means you can go into the editor and start moving the age slider as time goes by playing. Showing that you grew old playing Elite![]()
But the point is, these hairs are not need to be free floating.
They may be almost static (gel or whatever) and they may popup from collar and just hide in helmet. Thats all.
My problem with this is that almost without exception astronauts have long hair. The answer isn't going to change unfortunately. That was written with the help of Mr Brookes himself! I don't just pluck this information from thin air!
Edit - I see you're talking from a lore perspective specifically. I understand... but the technical limitations have the final say here, not the lore reasoning behind it.

(If you discard the blokes)
Big hair in space is normal

But...he's saying it's got nothing to do with what's "normal" or even justifiable, but instead what CAN be done.
"My problem with this"...has zero relevance at this stage.
Pretty sure we can just add a note to OP that we've hit the conclusion and close the thread.
