Gunner = Arcade Action Cam for the 12 yr olds?

Well.. however, the "tactical" gunner view IMHO should look different from the actual "real" view (because in the ed universe a cam view without an actual physical cam cant exist). The biggest difference would be full cg to wireframe. If you know another solution to distuingish "real" from "a generated tactical view" then Im glad to hear it. :)

Fairly sure ship computers have the horsepower to render a vr experience in the future, it can plot complex multidimensional jumps after all! Why would it need distinguishing? It doesn't have to be a camera, c'mon think outside of the box, this is future tech we are talking about!

It would have been nice for Frontier to go the extra mile and put in some clues clearly marking this as some virtual/enhanced reality mode (relying on ship sensors to create a 3d respresentation of the world around the ship but as such entirely blind to anything the ship's sensors cannot pick up) or explicitely make it a camera drone thing, succeptible to being shot down or jammed ala MWO.
But that would be depth and we can't have that.

Then it would be utterly useless.

Exactly. Trying to operate a turret while in a ship (and having to deal with its pilot's movements that you can't predict) would render turrets pointless. Limiting the POV to where the turret can move kneecaps an already limited position. It's not as if the turrets can fire in directions they can't reach (other than seeker missiles which can turn around in flight).

I see the functionality as being sort of like a computer assisted steady cam rig. The view is a projection you see virtually (like telepresence) based on sensor data rather than an actual POV (would be nice if you lose turret function if your sensor subsystems were destroyed)

Does indeed look like an Arcade Shooter to me (pretty much a "Incoming - Redux").

Too early to tell, but with the CMDR "Teleportation on Demand" (in a game world where you can't get even basic Trade Data for a 30Ls distant Station, let alone System Map information >20LY away)... Sense, it makes absolutely none.
It does look like we're seeing a clear "Console-fication" trend of ELITE. Would explain the heavy PewPew focus.

Oh well, who kows. Maybe V2.4 is an ingame Facebook? Share your Vanity shots, Selfies and footage straight from inside the game to various (a)social media? :D

PS.
I seriously would have expected to see Turrets running via "Turret Cam" instead (i.e. degraded Video stream and eventually losing one Cam when a Turret reaches 0% Integrity).
Just as to keep it rooted into the "we're actually inside a Spaceship" meme, not in "We're doing a space Arcade Shooter optimized for Consoles".

Not even going into the RPG style Crew leveling of individual Position Skills I would have expected - something it would have shared with NPCs in these very positions.

We'll see. From here on, it's likely too late to turn back from that trend. Too many resources have already been invested. One would have thought that they've learned from the CQC failure. It seems one would be wrong.
Heavy focus on what is clearly the most unreliable part of the Game (Instanced MultiPlayer), nicely demonstrated by the repeated Connection losses right through the presentation (Alpha build aside, it will happen).

It means I can join a ship for an Aussie Commander (say) .... sleep while he flies, giving him an extra pip to play with, and I collect the credits when I next wake up :D Then he does the same for me !

There we go again, seriously...

If you don't like it, if it breaks your inmersion JUST DON'T DO IT.

I won't be using this feature since I have zero interest in playing with other people, but it's a good thing they found a way to implement turret management in an engaging way. It add's a new way to play the game and that's a good thing.

And about the realism issues, did you hear about "drones"? That's the excuse used with the external camera on Eve online, and should work here too.

Can you imagine the uproar if Fdev decided to take away instant meetup and actually made us fly somewhere to use multi-crew, I wouldn't hold your breath for that happening.

Note that I agree with you, I don't like instant transfer either. I at least hoped that we'd have to fly next to another ship to engage multi crew.
BUT, it would have been the same, fade to black then pop right in the seat. There isn't much possibilities until space legs.

I hoped that the update might bring me back into the game, but for now that's still a nope.

Im not sure how they could of implemented it any other way. A first person turret would be very boring for some. I would of preferred that way though. My gaming style is more simulation. My games (DCS,SH5,Iracing, TheHunter, FSX).

They were dammed if they do and dammed if they dont. I am looking forward to multi crew. I really wish there was some kind of walking around ship and duel SOVs. Explorers would of liked that I think.

Looks very Arcade indeed.
Camera which cannot be destroyed, is free, uses no power, and can give 360 missile lock advantage.
Very poor implementation.

Lets hope this gets addressed during the beta phase.
No it was implemented fine, you just don't like it.
