Trouble Getting Friends into Elite Dangerous?

Bought it for my brother. He played it twice.

Showed it to five friends who all bought it and played for a couple days each.

None of them take my advice about games very seriously anymore :(

My nephew (in his 20's) has it, he just haven't installed it or played it ever.

I might have scared him a bit, since I have kind made a big deal about getting the CH HOTAS, pedals, vr etc etc....

I love elite simply because I'm this guy.

I've invited 8 people to play the game. All of them got bored and left because the NPC's weren't a challenge, the economy was broken, and a lack of functional social tools.

It really has nothing to offer anyone who is used to playing modern multiplayer games.

The problem is because there is no story (and Galnet does not count) and very basic quests (missions) people usually think what is the point so I also have a hard time to convince people it is fun.

My friends who did play for the first year or so have left because the game has become an arcade shooter.

Same story here with a mix of all these points. Had 9+ folks that I knew playing at one point but they've all moved on and most long ago. The reason is simply due to the game becoming an arcade / FPS-like shooter (except from a ship). Don't get me wrong as many of them enjoy the fast paced shooters but Elite can't compare to the likes of Titanfall's or Battlefields, Halo, etc. But those that left expected more of a sim experience which FDev hasn't delivered but other developers will likely deliver.

Fans certainly won't agree with this comparison but Elite is closer to a CoD type game than it is to any type of sim or realism based game. It didn't start this way but step back and look at what Elite is today which is 95% combat focused and this includes frequent respawning. Look back at the past 2 years of updates and where is the focus? Consoles and pew-pew. And what is coming up next? Console (PS4) and more pew-pew focus. Watch the dev livestreams; FDev seems okay with this gameplay from their reactions. And it's likely foolish to think the game will steer away from this course they have plotted - not now.

I even bought a friend a copy of ED when it was on sale, but he couldn't get interested, said it was like euro truck simulator in space, nothing meaningful to do.

I can see why he said that, I like Euro Truck

None of my friends will touch this with a barge pole...Im afraid its reputation is one of constant korean style grind with things like GTA in space being another popular theme. Of the few who did try, none of them stayed long as they merely confirmed what everyone suspected and that was that. As it stands right now, I cant really recommend this game with a straight face anymore...the enthusiasm just isnt there like it used to be ^

3 people I bought the game for called it "Broken" in so many ways and I honestly couldn't argue with them about that. Even now I don't think I could. They didn't have a chance to get out the door before they were set upon by NPCs and Humans alike. Even with me as escort they were prone to die almost instantly. I am pleased that multi crew will allow me to take on the role of Sugar Daddy and allow newer players a chance to scrape up a couple Million and get themselves a Viper or something. Maybe it will stop people from feeling stuck in sidewinders and opting to tap out.

Amazing...that entire friendships have been born and died and drifted apart in the time it takes for them to release a single update...

Sorry, but that line of reasoning is just projecting your own opinion on other people.

I invited a few people who enjoy multiplayer FPS. The game was boring for them.

It's just a boring game for most people. Period. Doesn't have anything to do with catering to one crowd or another, FDev didn't just missed the mark, they missed the whole dart board.

Most of us are still here for 3 reasons:

1: Fanboi
2: Lack of alternatives
3: Sunk cost fallacy in regards to time played.

Yeah I've never felt it easy to recommend the game to my friends. In the past I may have tried with a big but, but these days I tell people not to bother. Can you imagine trying to tell a well balanced gamer about the endless moaning about getting shot at. The mod harrassment and so on, and all the things they falsely promised, my good will for this game is well and truly gone. Recommend it? you have to be joking.

Number 2 here also.

And if someone tries to argue with me about alternatives existing by naming a couple decade old single player games I'm just going to ignore your post. You're being fatuous.

Yet here you are, endlessly yapping on about how you're SO done with the game

lol I don't yap.. I am however allowed to express an opinion arent I? Perhaps you'd prefer it if I joined the many others who've left and never looked back.

I have a friend who's a keen gamer but I'm having difficulty getting him into ED. He hasn't yet bought the game as he says prefers more action and I can't help but think he's simply dismissing ED as just being a space SIM. I've tried to explain to him that ED's so much more just than a space SIM, but he's not too fussed about buying and playing the game.

What's your experience? Did a friend have trouble getting you into Elite Dangerous? Are you having the same problem as me getting a friend into the game? Has a friend ever regretted getting the game? If so why?

Fact is Elite is a slow paced game although trailers try to sell the opposite, it is not an action game where you grab the joystick and get out the capital ship to fight the bads. I have your same problem with my nephew. We shared tons of online game hours on other titles, but I can't make it to bring him ingame. He bought Horizons too. I left him about year ago somewhere in the Bubble and never have seen him again (in Elite).

There's nothing strange with that. He wants to play for fast satisfaction. ED is not that kind of game.

Fairly sure if an alternative came along, these forums would be an awful lot quieter. I know Id be gone in a heartbeat...ED has itself become a placeholder...just treading water until the next one which will hopefully be better. FD started out good, but they have so dropped the ball lately. Gonna take more than vague hints and empty promises to fix this ^

Im here as there is nothing else out there at the moment that gives me my space ship fix, played X games to death, dont really want to spend any cash on a SC, nor NMS, there are some others I have my eye on.

I was hopeing ED was going to be the game I thought it was going to be and to some extent it is, but its been pretty much stagnant for a while now, and no 2.3 wont be the game changer for me at least, maybe 2.4 who knows, its ok for now.

What about Star Citizen? Might be more up your alley. It's made progress

My friends do not play video games, which is one of the things that help me keep my game time down.

This is something as a newb to Elite Dangerous I just can't fathom, when I am done with a game I just move on and find something else. I've noticed ED has lots of people who just loiter on the forums saying how bad everything is. I have never seen a community like it, even Eve wasn't that bad. :)

I stopped playing Eve, I stopped going on the forums..... Seems like a torture to me. If something upsets you so much why would you keep it around?
