I'm leaving, I don't expect to return.

After 3 days, 16 hours and 24 minutes, I am leaving.

Noooo, not leaving Elite Dangerous, I am leaving the bubble on my first proper exploration trip.

I have a DBX fitted out for just over 30 ly jump (with weapons). The plan is to scoot by the Pleiades sector to see if I can spot an alien, then head off wherever the fancy takes me. I am taking weapons as it is just my luck that these alien types decide to get angry, just as I am passing by taking pretty pictures with my space Polaroid (I have already had one of those days in RL). If I go down, I will go down shooting!

I intend to do the whole thing in open, including my return with lots of exploration credits, hence another good reason to go tooled up.

However, I don't expect to return as:

a) my planetary landings are suspect.
b) I enjoy a glass of wine or two whilst flying. This tends to make me fly into stars.

and

c) that galactic map completely baffles me!

I may well post a pretty picture or two in this thread, assuming I have not crashed into a star/ been shot by aliens/ been ganked by d*cks.

Au revoir CMDRs.

Hibachi.

Well, good luck CMDR and make sure you have fun.

If you get lonely, feel free to add me (or anyone on the "Lonely Explorers" list).

Have fun out there, and nice title as well :)

Been there done that...

Flew 12,000 Ly out investigate the Formidine Rift in an Anaconda. Went to get some materials from a planet, too relaxed to bother looking at the planets gravity, came out of glide quite high up from the ground. Took a moment to have a nice sip of wine, put my glass down to see the ground looming way faster than I was expecting and boom.

Took me about 4 or 5 hours to get out there and seconds to come back. [noob]

I like my guns too. Though I keep to the basic ones that came with my ship and the A-classed everything else. Of course when someone comes shooting I do a lot of running and boosting, hehehe :D

I always explore in open! have some rep for not hiding in a PG - I wouldn't stick around too long in the DBx during a fight though it has a lettuce leaf for shields

Hi All
Sorry to partially hijack this thread, I headed off into the deep black yonder for the first time last night, on route to Colonia (I think!!)
In a Python with a limited jump range so may take awhile
Any tips always welcome, flying in the Möbius PG

Regards

[up]

...this reminds me of my first expedition. I was so new and clueless :) Had no idea how to outfit my ship, didnt know what jump range is and why it is important. As a result was flying 21ly Asp  Returned 6 months later as a Elite Explorer, tons of great discoveries and a lot of experience.
These were good times :)

Good luck on your journey commander and welcome to the explorers club :).

I am lost already, EDExplorer shows me flying round in circles for a while, but then I seem to be heading "somewhere" fairly straight!

Buddy, if you can navigate please feel free to join me for a while...

In other news, I am several hundred light years out, currently landed in SYN.... something. Dear god planetary landings are confusing! But I got the LCU on the floor, and then tried the SRV for the first time ever. !!!! FDev, why change the controls into something totally different? At one point I was thinking of self destructing as I couldn't get the darn thing back to my ship!

Anyway, back from the pub now, and about to take off again...

Are you plotting each jump manually?

If you get ED Discovery it has quite good functionality for showing you your route on a map of the galaxy. Also plotting way points for longer journeys than the in-game planner can handle.

Thanks for the invite, but I'm heading south ish, I think.

I'm never too brave that I won't run away, but now I have options!

I never stick around in fights if I can help it! But if I'm going down, I want to at least graze their knees!

Are you plotting each jump manually?

I am looking at the galaxy map and trying to turn it so that I head south. I pick something that looks "lower" than I am and try to head there, but I am getting a lot of "can't plot route because no permit" type messages.

Yes, this is amateur hour exploration wise...

If you're trying to go South then yeah, there's a lot of 'unknown permit' sectors in the way just south of the bubble.

First off - I'm still not sure if you're looking for the next system each time or plotting a route to somewhere a few hundred ly distant. If you're not plotting multi-jump routes then do that, should resolve the circles. If you know where you want to go then try zooming out, orient the map and then pan a few thousand ly in the direction you want to go - zoom back in, pick a system and slap a bookmark on it. Now you've got a marker for a direction that'll keep you moving in a vaguely consistent direction - just point towards it and plot a route to a system a few hundred ly in that direction (the second icon under the system in the galmap, after the select the system one).

Secondly - if you can't get past the unknown permit systems and you're not trying to go somewhere specific then just go 1kly east or west before you go south and you'll be going down one side of the worst of them and should have many fewer problems.

Enjoy yourself, commander! And make sure the space madness (TM) doesn't catch you!
Be sure to make plenty of screenshots and don't be afraid to share them with us!

Fly safe!
