Aaargh!!! <Removed ~Brett C> griefers...

One: If your ship gets blown, you get the option of getting back the ship at its latest loadout back for a premium fee, or defaulting for the "free Sidewinder". That "loadout" means equipment, not cargo. Lesson: Never put all cash into the cargo, because you might end up losing your hauler and having to start over in a Sidewinder.

Two: You can see them on the radar before you even launch from the pad. Heck, you can scan them while still on the pad. Your options are a) return to hangar, launch later; b) exit at full thrust and make a run for it; c) exit at full shields, weapons hot to give them their due. Getting surprised by a missile salvo? Your fault.

Three: This game is expected to allow for pirating, and not only in "anarchy" systems. How do you expect that to work if police were coming down like a ton of bricks on everyone?

Edit: The player is actually seeing your point, but the Commander couldn't give a damn. Space is a cold place. ;-)

Well said. I spent a few hours trading the other day in my Cobra and I went from 50k to 300k in a matter of hours. I didn't have a moment of trouble. It didn't even crash or bug out on me. :)

2) What can be done against those griefers? Police should be more powerful in (federal) station vicinity, I would say. If I fly towards Aulin I get stopped two times for a scan, but those <Removed ~Brett C> can hang around the entrance of the station without trouble?

In most cases police will arrive after the fact.
In mp you might want to play with friends to protect each other and have more fun.

But it is an unfinished beta anyhow. So I suspect/hope that in the future there will be more systems in place to limit griefing. But in the end mp is always more risky than sp. And sp can be risky too, although AI behavior in general is much more predictable.

In the final version of Elite Dangerous, what will the penalty be for murder?

I hope it's more than just a fine, surely.

(yes apologies, I could search for the answer to my question but I'm on a slow so called smart phone).

To be honest your most vulnerable at stations as a trader so if the police presence is high and powerful like Eve, with enough police ships patrolling a griefer wouldn't have enough time to destroy you before being wasted themselves. That only leaves combat zones which you expect a fight in.

So basically your advise is to not bother trading during Beta. How are its mechanisms to be tested if no one is actually doing it?

There are many things being tested here, or at least attempted. Combat, travel, trade etc. However the only thing being tested by many traders at the moment is their patience. Someone in a Hauler is no match, or threat, to almost anyone but that doesn't stop them getting killed due to bored pilots who probably can't handle anything more than simple traders who aren't even expecting combat.

No doubt someone will come along to defend their position to engage in PvP, as would I, but there are better places to do this and with better competition.

But then, competition is not the goal here is it....

My advice is not so much "Don't bother testing trading" as "Expect a**holes to have their fun at your expense."

I do a little trading from place to place, though the market quickly flattened again so that I'm barely making 500cr per run. I usually hang around the mineral extraction sites, killing bounties and scavenging for dropped cargo. On a good day, I can make 20k in an hour that way.

My main point was not to put so much heart and intensity into this beta test that it causes a rage-flip every time someone takes out their crappy day at kindergarten on you. Chill out and use this as practice time. Maybe do a little 'griefing' yourself if that floats your boat. Hang around the mineral extraction sites with a cargo scanner and beat the hell out of me while I have a bellyful of stolen goods. It's all part of the fun of the anything-goes environment that we have right now.

I traded my way up to a fully equipped cobra, it was slow and very painful and i got reset more times than i can count, i know how to fight and i know how to run, the fact is i dont want to have to fight, there are pther parts of the game i am more interested in.

i got my progress reset as we went into beta and thats fine, so did everyone else, except that some players jumped straight back up to billions again and then of course helped out their friends while at the same time knocking all the most profitable items prices down flat.

Then of course FD had the GENIUS idea to go to second round beta and leave these people will all their credits and now we have fully equipped anacondas camping stations and murdering players still stuck in Sidewinders.

not like they could have reset everyone and just given us all 50k or anything sensible is it???

So far I have traded the whole way through this beta, all the way up to an Anaconda. I have never been attacked while trading.

I understand there are a few bad eggs out there but people complaining the game is unplayable because they have been killed once are blowing the problem out of all perspective.

Space is currently very safe and trading is very viable. In future patches space will become even safer and trading even more profitable.

Well I'm envious for one! I don't think I've had a session yet where I haven't been attacked, and this is in areas that are supposed to be safe, let alone in anarchic space! For me it's not been a case of being blown up once - I wish! I could put up with that!

Regarding naming and shaming: why not? If it is a Pirate that's in question then isn't that just what a pirate wants - notoriety!! :D

I'd just love to see market prices soar as a consequence - especially for ship parts, weapons and ammo

Don't give up - I've lost 20,000 creds due to pirates and griefers (yes there is a difference!).

Its still not a finished game yet!

Agreed. Just ganking people for lols needs to be hammered out quickly. I hope the penalty is severe enough that most learn the lesson quickly. Those who refuse to learn will end up hellbanned, which is the only way to fix them really.

You have all the makings of a complete country and western song there, you know.

I lost about 70,000 credits due to Dahan Gateway jumping about. Okay so it wasn't a player's actions but it was still the 'fault' of the beta state of the game. Just as there aren't police systems in place where there should be there isn't smooth rotation of the space station where there should be.

Go test something else for a while, come back in our weeks when everyone has to start from scratch and take another run at buying your dream ship then.

I have to agree... I just made my first million and have never been attacked by an NPC in a non combat environment...
Today I actually went looking for trouble, particularly at Freeport, but the close I got was a scan from someone outside the station whilst I was inside.
I figured this was my chance to see what all the fuss was about... So I boosted out of the letterbox and put the pedal to the metal... The dude didn't even get close!
Sorry to hear that its getting you down, but just be careful and I'm sure you'll be fine ...

Playing a game with a progression line that gets cut off by griefers is not progression its pure frustration to the point were i said to my self i wait before i start "grinding" again until we have a functioning criminal/retaliation system.

This is where most of you guys are getting it wrong. This isn't an MMORPG, you are supposed to be playing the game for fun, not doing the most boring tasks imaginable over and over and over again just for the sake of getting a new ship. And certainly not getting upset over anything that slows you down.

What are you guys going to do when you get that precious ship? Will you still be playing the game a week later when you have nothing left to 'progress' towards?

To the OP: what you experienced was not griefing.

/thread

Sadly we'll get an increasing number of such threads as we get closer to launch, and especially after that when people who can't tell the difference of piracy (partly about space pirates) from griefing.

Then please do something that its not even feasable in the first place...because our griefer friends are doing it all time when they get the short end of the stick...and many victims from those griefers are getting to be forced to use it -.- in order to keep what they grinded.

If I can run from 'our griefing friends' in a Lakon then anyone can.

It's not rocket science. (well technically it is, but you get the idea!!!)

As well as the policing side, I am hoping that bounties will get advertised, giving exact locations of pirates camping stations (inc Freeport since the owners of the station are still going to want their goods) - hopefully that would create an industry in itself, and make it much more expensive for pirates to camp the one spot.

Go shoot yourself in the leg because if I want locator agents EVE has enough and it won't take a genius to find some way of tricking a bounty on you.

I understand your frustrations, and I still play as I have hope for this game. I have seen griefers kill more than one game as players back out in frustration.

My latest encounter was as I left Chango in my hauler yesterday and an eagle was camping the station. Pilot flew in behind me and let loose. Gee thanks. Then to add insult to injury he posted the link to the video he made of him griefing in these forums. Not only do they get away with it in the game, they can brag about on the forums as well.

Oh well, it's gotta get better - right?

You'd think if naming and shaming is against the rules then posting and boasting to embarrass victims would be as well.
