News Ship naming – transmission intercepted.

Personally I don't mind, paying a couple bucks here and there if it helps keep development rolling along. Especially when you consider the severely delayed timelines between major rollouts. I'm guessing patch 2.4 won't be out for another 3-4 months, and the next major release won't be out for some time after that. Meaning FD won't see another major cash injection for awhile, making it important to find alternative methods for developing cash flow which is why there has been an increased emphasis on cosmetic items in the shop. I'm not suggesting FD are in any kind of financial distress merely pointing out they are more than likely keeping an eye on the future and ensuring there is sufficient cash flow for current and future releases.

So where is it written... this full price game definition?? Once you give a company money they have to keep giving you new stuff for free, just doesn't make sense. I will give them money each time they "produce" something new I want, that simple. If you don't want new stuff don't pay them for new stuff.

'resumes banging head against wall'

Yes, i gave FD my money. I paid for Horizons, and all features released during Horizons. I did not get SLF's, SRV's, synthesis, module storage, ship transfers etc. for free.

Where is the free here, exactly?

Newsflash: FD are doing well financially. They are not so hard up that they need microtransactions just to stay afloat. They just had a successful release and they've just paid for the license to a world famous movie IP.

Oh joy, ship naming, that'll bring out the best in the players. We'll have every fictional starship name repeated over and over by those with no imagination, random swear words and letter/number combinations from the juvenile branch and a tiny percentage of ships with actual half decent names.

FD should make a ship name permanent to that ship even when sold and decrease the ships value for every other ship with the same name. Also probably dish out a weekly prize for really GOOD names.

Zac, I implore you, give us a basic free option for ship name decal. Demanding real money for the name decal is really beyond the pale and completely indefensible.

It's bad enough there are no in game unlockable paint jobs, this is just another level.

For reference, premium beta backer from kickstarter, second account purchased with Horizons, approximately 10 paint jobs bough alongside a weapon colour. I'm not shy of spending money on this game.

I picked up Elite for $30 on the game preview program. I bought Horizons and I feel like I've gotten more enjoyment than I've paid for, so personally I feel comfortable buying any aesthetic add-ons I like enough to buy.

That being said, I think that the way they plan to handle uniforms- by offering standard colors to swap between in game for free and purchasable "high-end" designs is a great idea and shows that they were listening to their player base. This charging for name plates though does seem like one step forward and one step back.

Personally I don't mind because as some of the previous posts have stated, Frontier is a relatively small developer and I believe in their products so I don't mind supporting them, but I understand peoples' frustration.

With width being the key factor for external ship name decals, looks like I will have to save up for that Type 9 to finally launch the good ship "Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious II"

As long as I can have the good ship "Warren Beatty" .. no wait, "Faye Dunaway", no wait Warre ...

Not a 'trivial' thing (dev wise) to place / position a name, sprayed on each of all 30+ ships I think. It would be nice if all things in life were free but then again, throw in.

I'm interested if ships names are unique, which will mean a landgrab on day one; or you'll end up like with gmail-like ship names "EnterpriseBob1985" and "Ent3rpr1seBob1985" etc.

And if you can rename your ship, or is a name permanently attached. Given we can just transfer modules to a new ship of the same type, hopefully renaming will be allowed.

The point is that it shouldn't be a paid cosmetic to begin with.

It's not a required feature to play the game, whereas a monthly subscription would be. So, what's the harm?

In my world, the service rate I charge for my customers may be higher than the competition, but it is carefully calculated and the details of said calculation are made available if and when requested by my customers; and they understand you get what you pay for. (been using this method since 2003 btw).
My point is, FD is making these cosmetics available at very reasonable prices in order to help cover operational costs and by doing so at the same time it helps make the game more enjoyable. Other companies may not charge for these types of features, but you get what you pay for.

The pay-per-name thing is a little odd I have to admit. If the price is low, say £1 per ship with unlimited renaming per "name plate", then maybe it won't feel like too much of a gouge. Having said that, ship naming was in the Kickstarter FAQ...

Kickstarter FAQ said:
Can I name my ship?
Yes, although ship names are not unique. Your commander name will be unique and used to identify players.

...so this could be construed as a bait-and-switch. Of course FD could get all legal/pedantic and argue that you can name your ship, you just can't stencil it on the hull without a micropayment. It still feels a bit like a cash grab though. Let's just hope it's a reasonably small amount of cash they're grabbing.

The way it sounds like (Decal) it'll be a 1 time purchase to have the option to apply to all ships. The way I imagine it is that you fill the ship name in at the shipyard and just apply decal - ship name. And it auto-fills based on the name you put in.
I'm expecting somewhere around £3-£5 which I feel would be reasonable.

I may be wrong though, until we get it or get clarification we won't know.
