Patch Notes Update 2.3 The Commanders Beta - Changelog

Although (as far as I can tell) you will be able to see other people's ship names, if they have their plate. So ... ?

I think we can see our ships names when scanned
The NPCs even have ship names and id now when you look at the info panel

If you like you can look at it this way. The big companies such as EA etc. charge £30 or £40 a time for the types of updates that we're getting for free! Couple that with the fact that we've not had an annual season pass in the last twelve months that we'd be expected to pay for, and a few quid for something here or there becomes extremely good value for money :)
For free? Yeah, last time I checked a $45 AUD DLC and $200 season pass isn't free.

Nope, I checked with a few people, they couldn't see my ship name even after they'd scanned me.

Yeah, if they have a plate, which you have to pay for.
I don't think you should be forced to pay for something like that, especially when this feature has been something that people have been asking for for a very long time now.

I get it .. we'd all like, everything for nothing, true. But at the very least this should throw out some variety; some ships will show up a name, some won't. For me this just makes the name mean something and stand out. Certainly though, until we know how much, I don't think it's possible to judge if it's a good or bad thing (plus server rental, it's a business etc). PM me when the game goes live if you like, I'll gift you one.

I'm not asking for everything for nothing. I've already paid for the horizons expansion, so why should I have to pay again for one of the features introduced in it to actually do anything?

We could go around it all day because where did it say in Horizons that ship naming would be a thing? It didn't. It's a possible expectation though, so it is a thing .. you can name 'your' ship. If you want it to be scannable (by other people) there's a plate. It's peripheral, and won't alter your Horizons game or access to 'game content' in any sense. It's 'player content' really Cmdr? o7

This is an obvious cash grab attempt and fanboys like you should be ashamed for defending it.
Hell, they might as well start charging people to be able to see other people's commanders because hell, it's not critical to gameplay and won't affect your experience or anything.

It's not game content in any sense, it's player (to player) content ... or otherwise who cares what you scan as? (Not the NPC's). As said, it's not like we don't want everything for nothing but names might need moderating, the decal model needs adding, more server storage etc etc. so not really a fanboy issue, just a common sense one?

Yes, but it's content that's part of an expansion, an expansion we ALREADY paid for. And so what if they have to moderate it? If someone sees an offensive name they can report it and the support will have to take 30 seconds to look at it and ban them, whoopdy doo.

I take your point, and it's not invalid. All I can say in FD's defence is that the original expansion cost is some way below that charged by other companies for expansions. Plus what I said earlier about how we're getting additional expansions within that, that many other games companies would charge for.

Anyway, they've already said that ship names are server moderated, if the server picks up on any key words that aren't allowed, it will be blanked out and not shown to other players.

I dunno. It's a nice try .. but I don't think you can argue it as a cash grab. It doesn't affect what missions you can take and it's totally between you and other (real person) players. It's a vanity item then, and that's been the policy for quite a while on paintjobs etc.

Still the model needs adding + server store + just a nice thing (doesn't affect game)

I can and I will, it is an obvious cash grab.
It's a feature that everyone has been asking for pretty much since release and now they've gone and pretty much said "welp, you can have it, but you have to pay for it to show up or do anything" and you can bet that they know people will be dumb enough to pay for it.

People have been asking but Frontier sure didn't promise it (I know this because .. I was asking!! :p)

But FD should add to their server capacity (unlikely to be free exactly) and foot the cost of development for nothing? Bit thin I think, on a vanity item.

Sure, if you're going to make that argument, we should pay for each separate update in horizons, we should pay for multicrew and fighters separately because hell, they need to add that to their servers as well and hell while we're at it we should make it so that we have to pay for every single serverside update too. Your argument is flawed.

I really hope they'll be adding in and swapping out more bases to mix up the variety a bit.

Way too many of the old types, and with these really nice asteroid bases (especially that one in the ring, that's amazing) and super ships.

It ought to be something like 10-20% of all coriolis stations should be swapped out for the asteroid type, at least. Super ships should be rarer, but not so rare.

As far as the Holo-me goes I wish there were options to change the body shape, height and such. Not too excessively because that would become a headache with clipping.

I've already said a couple of times now, that other games companies charge big bucks for every single update. Would you prefer a few little things that cost a pound or two each be free, but each update (of which there are three or four a year) cost £30? To be honest fella, this is the only alternative.

No because those are core parts of (Horizons) game content, advertised and sold as the expansion season. What they aren't, is a peripheral, that's basically a paintjob under a different name.

To be honest, Elite Dangerous Horizons, with it's heft $50 price tag (used to be $60 I believe) and $200 season pass, has the most expensive DLC I've seen so far.

Other players not being able to see your ship name in the targeting panel unless you've bought a nameplate is absurd. I hope that this isn't intended behavior.

Your ship should be broadcasting its name and ID to people who can it. I also think that we should get a basic bit of sign writting free.
