I must say, I'm pretty disappointed with the name plates they shower off so far,

For a few extra monies maybe you pay to have your ship drag around a banner behind it with your name emblazoned on it. The banner could be twice the ship size that way everyone will see your ship name. With it written on the side you might be able to see it in a port as it is being docked.

Must say, I think I'd have preferred a basic text-only graphic, perhaps with a choice of fonts, for a suitably "industrial" look.

Those designs, especially with the failure to mirror the graphic, just look cheesy.

And also, fair warning to FDev, if they've created any designs which incorporate a US flag and they're displayed like that, they're going to get a LOT of complaints from yanks.

Entirely underwhelming, as expected. Yet, enough people will beat a path to the store willing to throw money at this for this style of "development" to continue.

Really disappointing, uninspiring nameplates, was hoping for a lot better.

Here hoping more premium nameplates will come in the future.
So this is what they will be nickle and dimming us for? It's even less effort than the block colour skins! How cynical of FD. I mean if this was the free option then fair game but there will be no free option. So this is it. This is the calibre of craftsmanship they expect people to spend money on?

No thanks.

I like them so far although a plain one would suit me best.
t would be great if we could get something that looks sprayed on, graffiti style. (not comic sans !!)

Hmm. When they spoke about needing "name plates" I naively (and it would appear incorrectly) assumed they'd be something similar to the body kits, a physical addition to the ship that would sit atop the complex geometry of the hull and provide a more uniform surface on which to stencil the actual name. Something like this might have justified making them a paid-for cosmetic.

But while the skull and other graphics are nice, there doesn't seem to have been much additional effort put in to what we're seeing here. Maybe the Asp is a bad example because for the name location they've chosen the largest unadorned flat area which happens to be dorsal aft, not where you'd traditionally expect to find a name on a ship designed to land on planets. I'd at least expect to be able to read the name from the ground when it's parked next to me. Maybe there's one that goes underneath, a la Starfleet registry numbers?

I guess the ultimate test will be the price. If it's one or two quid per style option, and each option can be used on any number of ships, it might be a worthwhile investment for those of us who like our screenshots and videos. Anything more than that, especially if it's per-ship, and it's going to feel like a cash grab. Never forget, "Can we name our ships?" was part of the Kickstarter FAQ. And while most players were quite forgiving of the delay in actual implementation, I suspect had the FAQ answer been "Yes, but you'll have to pay extra cash before anyone can see even the most basic stencilled name," that the responses might have been a little lighter in the goodwill department.

The proof of the pudding will be in the store soon, I guess.

No thanks. Big fail. Zero effort given.

Well they've certainly gone to some effort. Surely totally underwhelming for a reveal would just the shipname, and the reaction expected for that would be? ('is that it!?')

I like a clean nameplate myself but I like the pirate version, the star is pretty good too imo. The coriolis might have a place to BGS players but 60/40 for me. I'm not sure what the other one is.

I quite like this teaser of some of the designs. They're exactly what I expected - I expected the ship name to be painted on the ship with some embellishments. This is exactly what we have here. Guaranteed these won't be the only designs - they're not designs that take "no effort", no those are the block colour paintjobs - these nameplate designs have illustrations and illuminations around the text, which is quite a bit more work than a colour swap. Someone had to draw these decals in illustrator or something; sure some of them are simpler than others, for instance that skull one looks quite complex in fact.

The Ravager nameplate from the Unknown Trailer is another one that we weren't shown on stream, and it too looks well designed - a skull in an astronaut helmet with crossbones.

You may have been expecting really complex aeroplane nose art style stuff, but there is room for that to come. These nameplates are perfectly passable as a cheap cosmetic. If they cost a pound and can be used, like decals, on multiple ships, I'll have no problem buying one or two. I have some Frontier Points on Xbox still to use, so those funds are allocated anyway.
