I must say, I'm pretty disappointed with the name plates they shower off so far,

I know. They could have at least had gold framed neon signs with a special feature that blinds your enemies in combat.

Sarcasm mode off: No matter what they come up with some people wont like it. I personally don't mind plain and simple. It does the job and fits most paintjobs better.

Sure, and when it comes to full on ship kits and paint jobs I'd agree more that we have a lot of boring ones — But we're talking decal levels of cosmetics here.

Well.. im realy happy with them. Its exactly what i was expecting. Just like when you put a name on a boat. Or the side of red dwarf.

Neon lights!? Realy? That seems tacky.. if they do it i will enjoy the new target that will be quite literally in neon lights.

This looks fine enough to me, it's not like they would be readable from another ship passing by anyway, even if nameplates were as big as the ship itself. Maybe we should have the possibility to install a new module that replaces our engine sound with a voice that screams (angrily) our ship name continuously. Great fun at stations during CG's.

I'm not into beta, but I suppose the ship name will also be displayed with cmdr name when a ship is targeted...or not? The latter would be a pity.

Now that you mention it — that might be exactly what some people expected, since those kinds of exaggerated and cartoony cosmetics are very common in Free to Play games.

I totally don't have neon lights on my Liberator bomber in Planetside 2!

Currently you can only see other players ship name if you look at left hand UI, contact tab and select their ship. Can't remember when i did that last time...

Currently the latter. Targeted ships do not display any name. The speculation is that you need to have the name on the side of the ship for it to be identifiable by other players. Could change though - it's a beta after all.

If they cost close to same as bobble heads they better have lights and more interesting stuff on them than just simple font and small picture. I am ready to pay for cool looking stuff, but those look like low effort, something most can do in word easily.

I want my ships name to be painted in gold fleks and sparks whenever I boost, that way when I boost away from people it will say, "MISSED ME!"

The youtube content from people blowing me up would be pretty good too.. "MISSE---" *boom*

On the Corvette there are lights illuminating the Elite logos on the left and right sides. Hopefully there will be one for the names as well. Knowing Frontier this preview is too basic per what may finally be released.

The only disappointment I had was that the Reaver ship with 'Reave....' nameplate in the other promo vid wasn't named 'Rancorous Bison'

We should get a basic name plate for free and pay extra for the fancy lettering ones/mini decals. But I suspect we will have to pay even for the very basic one :(

Very good give them some constructive feedback and be nice, as prob just a first mock up of name plates.

Some players in another thread have mentioned typefaces such as
a woodern type western one
metallic effect
burned in like written with a high powered laser

I think some funny ones would be
written in crayons like a child has done it or used paints. you know backstory kid has written on daddies spacecraft, bless
sprayed with a spray can freehand
or for the pirates, written in blood, or spelt out like someone has used a pistol to fire bullets to write the name.
That 1970s space style lettering that you see in space 1999
