I must say, I'm pretty disappointed with the name plates they shower off so far,

Even a choice of fonts like shown above would greatly enhance the point, and POSSIBLY I might be convinced to pay £1 or £2 for a font selection.

So, wait, ship nameplates will take the place of ship decals? They really couldn't fit nameplates on in addition to ship decals??? :S

That's not at all what I expected. Well, guess it saved me some money then, because I always fly with my DWE emblems showing. What a shame, ah well.

Cheap, and no effort, but same can be said about most "paintjobs" that are just basic recolors.

Seriously, it shouldn't be that hard to make good looking stuff.

I still can understand these posts... if that game is so great why are you here wasting your entertainment funds and time???

Honestly? Because I want to play the game that Braben described in kickstarter dev blogs and Sandy et al detailed in the DDF back in the day. I also think that FD is a decent company and that independent development houses should be supported.

However, that doesn't mean that they should get a free pass for decisions like this that would make even EA blush...

My bad, I didn't understand how truly upsetting these name tags were to so many of you. Hell, I can't recall a single video log from Braden's Kickstart dreams and promises where he promised free name tags after launch... free anything for that matter. I can't recall complaining about the cost of my entertainment, I always figured if I can't afford to play I should be working more. This is a good game, not perfect, better than any other of it's kind. I will continue to pay them to develop and fine tune it, with the added fun of these forums.

Thanks for the tears... I love single moms, just added the dad part to be fair, you know equal opportunity.

They weren't too impressive, especially considering they won't be free. I think these should have been free and then they could have made some really fancy designs and charge for those.

Whatever – will buy all forever.

...

I mean, I'm going to buy them anyway – been waiting too long for any real form of ship naming as it is – but I'll reserve judgment for later. :p

Back in 2012 it wasn't even clear whether the game would be partly subscription-based or paid for wholly by purchase fees and microtransactions. That's a discussion that came later, and the conclusion was strongly in favour of microtransactions.

Prior to that, when the KS was ostensibly talking about the game as a whole, this made it into the FAQ:

shipfaq.jpg

Now if you want to get technical, linguistic, legal, there's nothing there to say that any aspect of ship naming would be free. So there's not going to be a rush to the courts over this. But in the context of the original Kickstarter, when funds were still being solicited from backers and the general perception was that anything answered in a FAQ or comment would be part of the launch game unless explicitly stated otherwise, it's a bit cheeky of FD not to offer a basic naming feature for free.

And yes, I know you can "name your ship" in the game interface so there's another technical, linguistic, legal argument to say that they've met their commitment. But again, there's the letter of the law and the spirit. You can name your ship but nobody else can see it unless you pony up some cash? Imagine if the Kickstarter FAQ had said that. You might as well write the name on a Post-It and stick it to your monitor. You're the only one who's ever going to read it unless you stump up the dough.

Not cool, FD.

(I've read in at least four places now that ship names won't even appear on scans unless you've paid for a name plate, although I must admit I can't find an FD-originated source for this. If this turns out not to be the case, and that ship names appear on scanners and/or HUDs without payment, I will be happy to modify my stance on this. If anyone has a link or other reference to this either way, I would love to know the definitive answer.)

Where is the 'plate'? Why are they being called name plates without a plate?

Edit: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=name+plate&source=lnms&tbm=isch
Exactly this! This is why I thought they would be low-profile body modifications with an actual "plate" for the name, even if that plate itself was just a flat panel. That's what you think of when you see "plate" in this context. The problem is that it's hard to know whether FD's occasionally strange and confusing use of language comes from ignorance, naivety or deliberate manipulation. There have been historical arguments for all three.

But you're right, what we saw on the PAX video are quite simply not name plates. They're just names.

They do look cheap hopefully for those that want this the price will reflect it.

in the Patch-Notes:

Ship Naming
  • If it's not our ship and they have no name plates, then we don't know the ship's name

Lol
This forum some times...

"Wouldn't it be cool to name ships?"
"I'd like to name my ships"
"I MUST name my ships!"
"OMG FD, why the hell can't I name my ships?"
"REALLY? I DEMAND SHIP NAMING!!"

*Gets ship naming feature*

"It's not good enough"
