Rift users! Let's make space dark again! Fix for the Rift CV1 bad low-end gamma.

These settings seem like they don't work same way with the DK2!
Can you guys paste here the values of not only those 2 values but all the remaining values of that config file please so I can compare with mine please?

I tried it yesterday with my CV1. The blue blobs in space i got are now much more subtle. Space is as black as it should be anywhere else. I don't think that the cockpit got to dark with that tweak as others mentioned in this thread. I think after all this time with the overbright CV1 defaults, we are just not used to it. Colorwise it is much closer to the colors that i had with the DK2 and also closer to what ED looks on a regular screen. Which i guess is what it is supposed to look like. I think that this tweak goes into the right direction.

I am happy to hear that you find CV1 image to be improved by this tweak. Just remember to check your settings and do comparisons yourself for example when Elite Dangerous patches or Oculus runtime patches are released. We never know if they will try to improve this and then these settings might obscure the improvements.

Tried these settings and they got to dark for me. I could not see the window bars in my Viper. I will try with ToeDenominator at 0.2150 and see if that helps. Thanks anyway.

same here, got to dark. I will keep an eye on this.

Thumbs up cmdr horizone!

I used that setting copy/paste for my DK2 fed by RX480 and it really did improve things a lot. While in hyper jumps some textures were obvious before because of bad alpha channel blending it now looks really like dusty clouds without any edges. A bit odd was the impression in inter system FS drive the space is slightly darker than when actually dropping out at a station/planet. I might fiddle with the figures to optimize further but it was definitely a much needed improvement.

So far it looks like it's working on both CV1 and DK2 - results might rather depend on variations in headset panels and different kinds of graphics cards n settings...

I don't understand?! I'm using a DK2 and those settings makes everything super-white and bright to the point where my explorer interior is completely white. Maybe my config file has different numbers for the other parameters?! So could someone paste here ALL the contents for that config file and not just those two parameters please?

as said i just did a copy paste of what horizone suggested in first post - any major difference i'd rather say it depends on given hardware and GPU driver settings. I would assume you have to adjust the figures to what fits your individual system setup best.... guess there is not a standard value fits all solution, which kinda makes sense. There are gamma adjustments via test pictures in many (console) games for a reason, same would be necessary for VR and ED too i think.

I have a DK2 but stopped using it as soon as I got the CV1. I remember though that while waiting for the CV1, I was using the DK2 with Oculus Home and at that time the colours was really washed out in the DK2. Like it received a signal colour-adjusted for the CV1 I guess. I have to reconnect my DK2 at some point maybe and make some comparisons. But FYI my gamma-curve adjustments are only meant for the CV1 at Elite default gamma and I can only test with my own stuff and the results are ofcourse something I myself found improved looks. YMMV. As a full-time working single dad, I only have limited time but would love to do more research at some point.

Nice call Horizone. I found after a while of comparing the SC transitions that <ToeDenominator>0.2078</ToeDenominator> was about the right balance with my CV1 and I reduce Gamma by 2 notches. Let's rock!!!

It would be better to avoid future resets to defaults after game updates to copy the lines in the following file instead.

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\GraphicsConfigurationOverride.xml

That way when an update comes, you won't have to worry about the settings being overwritten.

So as follows:

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<GraphicsConfig>
<GUIColour>
<HDRNode_Reference>
          <ToeDenominator>0.2050</ToeDenominator>
          <ToeStrength>0.2300</ToeStrength>
  </HDRNode_Reference>

			<MatrixRed> .33, .11, 0 </MatrixRed> <MatrixGreen> 1, 1, 1 </MatrixGreen> <MatrixBlue> 1, 1, 1 </MatrixBlue>
		</Default>
	</GUIColour>
<GraphicsConfig />

With 2.2, I had gamma at 0 to try and get things dark. With 2.3, this was just too dark for faces on the comms panel and I had to put in 2-3 notches of gamma. Making these "Toe" changes makes the clouds and galaxy darker, and I can put in another 1-2 notches of gamma to brighten the cockpit and commander faces in the comms panel. This is a nice change. :)

Changing the ToeDenominator value makes pretty obvious changes. Your value of 0.2050 was a little too dark, probably because I still use a lower gamma, and I found 0.2150 worked well. On the other hand, I didn't see much of a change with changing the ToeStrentgh, say from 0.2000 to 0.2500, so I just left it at 0.2300. What effect should I be seeing with ToeStrength? Thanks.

I've been playing with old settings again for a more moody (and dark) atmosphere based on this old thread:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...out-colors-and-low-contrast-Not-anymore/page4

I've included my tweaked settings combined with OP's tweaks here and a 'rusty' brown interface which seems to be doing fine regarding minimizing 'god rays'.

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>

          <ToeDenominator>0.2050</ToeDenominator>

It also pays off to play with your gamma settings, and turn Bloom and Effects off completely.

I for myself don't mind that the avatar pictures are black squares. feel free to change your GUI settings to your liking.

Alternatively here is a toned down white GUI with blue interface elements for the Imperial crowd. Bringing down the 0.65 value further down will make it even less god-ray prone. It's a shame that the station interface does not seem to have the same brightness and color setting as the ships's environmental GUI's. Maybe something to put on their to do list.

Code:
<Default>
			<LocalisationName>Standard</LocalisationName>
			<MatrixRed> 0.65, 0.65, 0.65 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> 0, 0.65, 0 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 0, 0, 0.65 </MatrixBlue>
		</Default>

Copy the whole shebang in the file found here:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\GraphicsConfigurationOverride.xml

All flavors of ED will be affected at once: Live/Beta/Arena/ etc...

Happy tweaking

Bloom can only be dropped to "Medium" using the in-game options - or can that be turned off completely in the settings file?

X-Terminator repped for awesome and totally appropriate use of a classic Aussie song.

No,

Bloom can be set to:

OFF
MEDIUM
HIGH

No need to fiddle with the settings file itself, this can be done under Quality setting in the options screen ingame.

After using this in-game for a few sessions, I'm really noticing big differences in many different situations - and they're all great. :)

Now if we could just get the dark side of planets to stay dark as you approach and land on them. I remember when the brightness varied, depending on ambient or reflected light, but some being pitch black. Now they all seem to brighten up to about 50% or so. :(

Just want to say thanks to the OP for the tweak, it works like a charm. Especially X-Terminator's settings.

You get a much more realistic ambience inside certain ships like the clipper. It also has the benefit of darkening the side panel backgrounds which looks much better against a star.

Well done.
