Pimax 4K: Is there any way to set up higher VR-resolutions in Elite Dangerous?

For me, headlook mode doesn't work in Elite when a HMD is used. I tried using an EDTracker with the Pimax to overcome its terrible tracking problems, but headlook mode becomes non-functional even if you disable the Pimax's built-in gyro sensor.

Compared to the Vive (which I also have), the Pimax's resolution is definteily welcome, and you do get used to the 60Hz, but the black levels are not as good (it's not using an OLED panel), and the current tracking problems make it a pain to use. If it had better tracking, I'd recommend it due to its price.

Also remember that it uses HDMI 1.4, so cannot operate over 30Hz if running at resolutions higher than 2560X1440. That said, 2560X1440 seems pretty damn good.

With all of this in mind, one can either await the noloVR tracker and hope it integerates nicely with the Pimax, or one can wait for the release of the FOVE. Given the total package, the FOVE is what I'd call the first true second-gen VR headset.

LG are also coming up with second gen hmd real soon

From what i gather by specs.
The fove at best can be considered a gen 1.3.
The lg, if they add things like eye tracking might make it 1.5 at best.

The starvr with eye tracking is possibly the closest to second gen vr, but they arent mainstream at all.

Yeah would love the starvr with that amazing FOV. Lg also working on large FOV like the starvr

Well, from what I heard their current prototype was five degrees more than vive\rift, and soft on all specifics, so could be more, could be less in a finished product.

I'd offset that scale due to the amount of GPU horsepower required for the res. In a realistic sense, the FOVE is second gen.

Hi everybody,

ok, it is quite some time since I last played ED.
But as the Oculus is for sale right now, I decided to give it a try once more and compare it with the Pimax once again, now, that I have flown ED for weeks with the Pimax 4k.

In the end, I am quite unsure which VR googles to keep:

The Rift has
+ excellent, vivid colours; indeed better than the Pimax
++ homogenous image / FOV from the center to the edges; perfect
+ absolutely no tearing when moving my head
+ perfect positional tracking :)
+ no need to re-center once per minute
but
-- still an annoying SDE with comparatively more blurry objects on the whole (SS set in Steam VR to 1.8) - especially as I got used to the 2k/4k of the Pimax without any SDE at all

Last but not least I did not get motion sick in the Rift as feared before due to my first Rift experience in December. But it seems as if my training with the Pimax persists, even though the immersion in the Rift was more intense. At this time.
But I admit I cannot really feel any difference compared to the Pimax except the positional tracking adds quite some atmosphere.

On the other side, the Pimax has
+++ absolutely no SDE; pin-sharp objects even far away in the distance / background
+/= familiar range of colours even though not as vivid
but
- no positional tracking
- a bit an inhomogenous image / FOV; edges get a bit blurry
- need to re-center at least once per minute, sometimes even more often

*thinking...* *thinking...*

I don't like the Rift's SDE at all...

On the other side, Pimax probably will launch its 8k with positional tracking in December...
Might be worth it to keep the Rift until then and give the 8k a chance then...

Dammit... why can't the Rift have at least a 2k-display? Or the Pimax 4k have positional tracking?

Difficult decision...

Question, so if the the limit for hdmi at 4k is 60fps is the 8k one they are working on display port or something? Figured it would have to be something different to offer 60+ fps.

Unknown on the connection type, but they are considering different panels at the moment i.e. perhaps an OLED option - see here: http://forum.pimaxvr.com/t/pimax-oled-edition-for-customers/2406

Their forums are a good place to go to for news, as they are quite active in getting and giving feedback on their products.

By all accounts the current 8K prototype should be in the hands of selected reviewers this month (there's a thread asking for suggestions on who to send them to).

Any update on your decision?
