Housten we have a problem......(NPC's)

Because we have ways too many NPC's in the game.
Seriously, the presence of NPC's are more than annoying.
It doesn't feel like a multiplayer game to me, whenever i arrive in a system/starport/planetary base.......all over dozens of NPC's.
Even at the engineers (harmless NPC's docking and leaving......thought the had no access to engineers, what do they do there?)

The game would be so much better if the space would populated with actually real players.
Same for the economy, it's kinda hilarious how much influence the NPC's have to the ecomony and how less influence the players have with transporting stuff etc.

While the NPC's are quite clever, they should be reduced because of the immersion. Here and there a few should be fine.

Under normal circumstances i would say, NPC's a griefing and ganking but i'm not quite sure if the definition is applied to players and NPC's equally.
I don't carry anything, they just interdict me, they attack me for no reason (they die anyway).
What is the purpose of such an high ammount of NPC's all over the place?
Had the suspicion it's something like a placeholder until more players play in Open or something like objects the PvE community play with.
But i could be wrong.
Is there anything planned to reduce them?

Thank you.

Impossible. With how instancing works our planet does not hold enough people to occupy the bubble properly...

is this a joke/sarcasm thread?

Battlefield servers can handle up to 64 players in one instance without much problems and the game is ways more detailed and complex than ED is.
I don't think it's a problem.

Sure, but you dont have the people to fill those instances. There's tens of thousands of systems in the bubble. There are a couple of thousand concurrent players at every moment, including everyone not in the bubble. See the problem?

Battlefield is by the way not even remotely as 'detailed and complex' as ED. Visually sure, but not data-wise.

You know what an instance/session/lobby is?
The current system don't need to be changed, just replace the NPC's with players. If there are only 2 players in a system....it's then pretty empty but feels much more realistic than overflooded NPC presence only for cosmetical purposes.
And even data-wise, BF has quite the same incoming/outgoing network traffic......

Just an opinion, but I feel that there are enough NPC around to create ambience, if it's matter of performance and amount of players is a different question, but as a living universe I'm ok with the amount of NPC's.

If it were only populated by players would be totally empty, also you should use the NPC for solo gaming or it would be a total mess.

if anything we need MORE npcs in an instance.

if you go to a major population centre space would be chock full. of course the engine could not cope so they get cut down somewhat.

Okies ! But you are aware that Battlefield applies another Network Structure than this game? There are not a centralized server like in BF, here everything is decentralized. About not being any CMDR'S in the game? Well, there are many answers to this interesting question  Try some threads on the forums, or do a search on "grifers" "gankers" "murder" ,
Well I dont know. but many people have told me. Many reliable, good people have said, that is where the answer is hidden. So it must be true. The Internet never lies. Only some. And they are not good at it.....

Cheers Cmdr's

I agree, more players, less NPC's.

NPCs are not implemented well in to this game either. In Eve, they helped make the world feel alive, in Freelancer, they made the world feel very alive, in ED they are just noise.

How many belugas dock in every station, not even variety.

Also, get rid of the dialogue all together, its so poor. Your in a wedding barge, why would you locally broadcast "THIS IS THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE"

Or the ones that chase you down, for the 4 obligatory telemetry suits we got as a reward for that mission we didn't even know they dumped on us. "So the rumour is true, good job i found you first!" or "Big haul like that...surprised you made it this far!".

Big haul? Rumour? Did you all stand in a bar pointing at my docked Clipper "hey guys, see that? 4 Telemetry Suits....JACKPOT!....Ignore the miners with the low temp diamonds!"

Half the time i just jettison them to avoid the hassle of evading the tediously boring interdiction which you can no longer lose!

Rant over.

TLDR; i agree with OP.

imagine, if the game wouldn't allow to differentiate between npc and players.

same effect :)

(i had such experience, when i had a million bounty on my head, and advertised in some groups when i'd go bountyhunting in my eagle, and in which RES. every "ship scan detected" gave me a shot of adrenaline for several days. finally one cmdr killed me in an eagle duel... well played!)

No way.

a LOT of people play in Solo and Private groups, removing NPC's would make the game even more static and lifeless than it already is!

What nonesense to even suggest such a thing!

Thinking about better server performance, less NPC's more ressources available for everyone.
Not talking about Solo players and their problems, the Solo life is already boring....with more or with less NPC's.
When there is no other player in a system....then it is just empty....why we need NPC's? To maintain the perfect illusion?

Okay, to each his own. You do realise that 99.9% of systems wont be 'pretty empty' but just 'empty'? So no piracy, bounty hunting or anything ever happening at all? :p

To, you know, have gameplay.

for you. i for exampel love to hang around stations and scan arriving and departing NPC for their cargo, to collect data on the trading part of the BGS etc. actually NPCs are similar to what planets and stars are for me when out exploring. i love the PwPvE part of the game... which relies on NPC heavily.

Eh...?

Ok, so lets assume FDev has a brainfart and suffers a temporary episode of insanity, sees the weird fallacious logic of the OP and then goes ahead to reduce the number of NPCs in the game with a view of replacing those NPCs with real human players...

...

... How do they get more human players again?... [blah]

Sorry, OP, you're drunk. Try sobering up before posting on the official forums.

Feelin lonely? Add me as Friend ingame :p

Thing is, with the Shift i see more and more People playing mostly in (Private Mode) - or feel comfortable with.
When playing with some Friends they mostly say - hop on over instead - Lets go Open - and that seems infectious *.*

One Day, when Moebius feels "more alive" than Open... oh wait... already happened :p

Cheers!

The dialogue is naff, I wish they would drop it from the game.
