Joystick and VR - advice

For me analog yaw control is essential. So if I would ever decide to upgrade from my X52 Pro to a Warthog I'd need to invest in pedals, too.

So far I'm very pleased with my X52 pro which I'm using since 2015. My only issue is that the forward detent on the throttle seems to have moved forward a bit over time and somehow prevents moving the throttle all the way forward at times. Not a big issue though as that usually only happens one or twice in a session and is easily solved by moving the throttle back and forth once again.
Those 2 detents on the throttle are quite useless anyways, I would much prefer having just one in the middle postition to facilitate finding the point of 0 throttle.

I've had it for a month or so. I haven't cracked it open yet, but I did see plenty of YouTubes regarding internal 'issues.' Wires being unbound isnt an issue, but if they're rubbing anywhere I'll address it, or possibly just replace them :)

Did you get the X56 Rhino recently? I had a X55 (which is almost the same) and because Saitek didn't bother to wrap the flimsy cables all the way into decent duct tape in the Throttle unit, the cobwheels ate through them and bit by bit the buttons stopped working, including the dials too.

If you feel confident enough, you might want to take a peek inside your throttle unit as well, and verify that with the X-56 they changed their modus operandi and did not half @ss their job.

To OP, to each his own, but I would definitely recommend the CH fighter stick (usb) and the CH throttle. The pedals are not really required, since you can set the thumbstick for lateral rotation.

..since you can set the thumbstick for lateral rotation.

What do you use for lateral thrusters, then?

On mine, I have pitch and roll on the joystick, yaw on the pedals, throttle on the throttle's main axis, and then vertical and lateral thrusters are on the little analog hat stick thingy. Is there a better way?

My second Thrustmaster Hotas X is starting to get a little glitch. I will buy another.

Does everything you need and is comfortable.

I do use voice attack though.

I like the x52 pro personally, with that and voice attack you have everything needed to play. You can even set up some standard messages through voice attack awesome piece of software and its now on steam.

I use VA sometimes, I've got enough buttons so I don't need it, it's just neat. I never managed to get it to send small msg's for me. That would help a bunch in VR when it's sometimes not ideal to type. Have you an example of the script?

I don't want to go off topic so feel free to msg that to me :)

As a Vive owner, I cannot stress this enough. Joystick is OK, but a HOTAS is needed for full control and the best experience.

HOTAS - Hands on Throttle And Stick means your hands never leave the controls. In VR, you cannot see anything, so HOTAS is perfect. I use a T.16000M HOTAS (All combat related keys are on that unit) with Voice Attack for secondary commands I cannot fit on the HOTAS. I also have a 46 key Delux keyboard with dimpled keys for easy finger orientation.

The detents don't have any use in ED, for sure. If you fly jets, though, they are there for idle and reverse thrust.

HOTAS and VR is amazing, but good lucking finding a method to mount your HOTAS. Right now I've got them on heavy ammo-cans and they still wobble out of place constantly. I don't have arms on my chair to mount them to and I can't mount them to my desk without some pretty crazy modification.

This has been my most major road block for enjoying the game since I started, hopefully it wont be yours as well.

Edit: By the way, I have the TM Warthog which is extremely heavy on its own.

Check my signature, I made it by myself and the only tools needed were a drill and a jigsaw. If your chair has metal legs and a wooden seat, it's easier than it seems!

Hmm ok so i was also looking at the warthog.... obviously the price is a bit scary but it looks amazing! What are the biggest advantages of the warthog compared to the x52 in VR in your opinion?

Couple of things - Warthog is a great stick, but the throttle is kinda poor when it comes to ED. Also, the Warthog has no twist - so you'll want a set of pedals, consider this and allow for it in your budget.

My personal choice for throttle is the CH Pro Throttle, very reliable and well built, if a bit old technically. It has a very good button layout, and I find it pairs well with just about any stick.

For a stick with twist, the VKB Cobra M5 and Thrustmaster T16000M are probably your best choices. The T16000M also has HOTAS set up with the FCS throttle, which I've heard good things about, but am yet to try personally. The VKB is also now end of life, and it's not likely you'll find one in the wild.

Some good new options coming out in the stick world - Virpil have a brilliant looking Mongoos T-50, with an excellent array of buttons base don a modern Russian jet, and VKB have their Gunfighter with modem combat grip due for release soon. These sticks are direct competitors to the Warthog, and lack twist (though, I believe VKB will be release a twist kit for their sticks).

Those last two look like excellent options for ED, with lots of bindings on the stick, at your fingertips, where you need them. An absolute must for VR.

The X52 actually looks like a brilliant set up for ED, but I'm am just not convinced about the quality control process, lots of bad press there, and I doubt Logitech could have turned that around just let... But we'll see.

Personally, I currently have:

Warthog HOTAS
VKB Cobra M5
TM T16000M
CH Pro Throttle
VKB T-rudder MKIII
Baur F3 pedals

My pick, for VR, in office chair mode, is the Warthog stick, VKB Pedals and CH pro Throttle. The Baur pedals are awesome - but are reserved for my sim pit (yes, they are better pedals than the VKB, but the VKB is better for the up/down movement from an office chair, as most people would probably play).

Z...

I have a T Flight HOTAS X and Voice Attack. Works wonders FA on and off.

I am getting a TM T16000M without the throttle for use as a twin stick. :D

Galaxy Map View Won't Recognize "JOY 1" only when I try and "EXIT" map.

As the title suggests, I cannot Exit the Galaxy Map.... except by hitting escape, and then resuming.. NOT IDEAL... I have my X-55 all mapped out for pretty much everything, including Galaxy Map view... but for some reason when I scroll all the way to the bottom of the left panel to exit the map, when I get to and highlight "EXIT" and pull my "JOY 1" trigger.. NOTHING. It will NOT recognize my trigger.. but only in that instance. Everywhere else "JOY 1" works just fine. My fear is when I was re-mapping.. somehow I "undid" the binding for "selecting" things in Galaxy map mode.

Anyone know which binding I should look at (In Galaxy Map or anywhere else) to make sure I didn't undo the "Joy 1" binding as being the button to press to make selections once highlighted in Galaxy Map view?

Or.. If I am totally on the wrong page.. any suggestions? But I think I just screwed up a binding somewhere, and cannot figure out where the heck it is.. or which one I messed up. I would hate to revert back to default bindings.. because I LOVE MY SETUP!!! :)

Thanks everyone for the help!

See you all at the station.
