General / Off-Topic Dijsselbloem, resignation! This clown must leave !

Jeroen Dijsselbloem, President of the Eurogroup, who heads the euro zone, and who in his country is Minister of finance, has just declared to the German daily "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" that the countries of southern Europe "spent their money on alcohol and women and then asked for help". Antonio Costa, Socialist Prime Minister of Portugal, called for the resignation of Dijsselbloem. The former Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, and many elected members of the European Parliament also called Dutchman to leave.

Minister of countries should stop trying to influence how and who represents another sovereign country. Also they should stop drinking and womanising :D

He must leave the presidency of the Eurogroup but also be punished by his country. Prohibition of drinking alcohol and womanizing for 3 years minimum

:p

Speaking as European Citizen (currently) I genuinely have never seen this President before!

Is he on a state salary and pension plan? And if not why not! :p

No idea who is this man, but he might be onto something :D
I believe Dylan Moran commented on Berlusconi in one of his performances: "He's so crooked he sleeps on a spiral staircase".
Applies to all politicians in my mind though.

Totally taken out of context. Its called an analogy. He said that just as someone who spend his money and booze and women shouldnt then complain about being broke, some EU countries should blame themselves for their disastreous multi-decade long financial misconduct. Which is spot on.

Ofcourse the countries concerned will play the righteous indignation card rather than getting their crap y
Together. Looking at you, Italy.

And sion they'll be the poor little helpless country that desperately needs our help. Get lost.

We'd actually prefer Jeroen's honesty over the next tax-grabbing move by some EU countries...

I was actually shocked that every 2nd taxi in Athens is an AMG V8 Mercedes C or E Class. (and not the fake "AMG look")
I was already suspecting that there's some completely bananas tax avoidance scheme going on with that stuff, since there's no way in this universe to run that taxi profitably (buying price is about 100k and running cost in city traffic ruinous) with the prices they charge. None. Nada. Zilch.

I mean, germans like their Mercedes Taxis, but it's the "taxi model" (bout 20.000 EUR) with the "taxi engine" (2.2litre Diesel - very durable, and moderate consumption).

Yup, its unfortunately a somewhat common cultural phenomon in the south to just go ape and assume the north will fix it for them. Fun story: When people in Athens were asked if they had a pool on their tax forms, 324 pools were declared. In reality 16974 existed. That means 98.9% Athenians commited fraud on that one item alone when they had the chance. 15 billion in tax evasion annually. Guess who has to pay for it? And when bags of cash aren't automatically given, no questions asked, we (Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavian countries) are the fascists and oppressors. Now we have someone point this simple issue out and these coutries try the 'its sexist to say that' card.

Yes, country-that-repeatedly-voted-for-Berlusconi, *that* is sexist...

Yes. Kinda silly that a Berlusconi with his hundreds of lawsuits for corruption was in office so long.
Also Fillon with his family business did not step back.
Le Pen embezzled EU money and is still in the race.
Our AfD cheated in half a dozen internal elections for well payd positions and is still supported.

Merkel had exactly .. no personal scandals. Tough decisions I don't envy her for. Maybe some of them questionable, but in the end rather statewomanly.
But sure.. blame all on mom.
And Dijsselbloem "telling it like it is" .. scandalous. But let's cheer for a complete mess like trump and his phobias.

What a weird and unexpected statement by Dijsselbloem. If true I am disappointed.
I have not seen anything in the news about this yet.

That was the way it was translated, not what he said in the interview (which is pay to view and this article was just paraphrasing).

He said "I can't spend all my money on alcohol and women and then ask you for support. One has to take responsibility. On a personal, country and European level."

He didn't mention southern Europe or any specific country.
That the southern European press translated it like that... "honni soit, qui mal y pense".

It isnt true. Its just taken out of context to fuel anti-EU sentiments. He used a common phrasing (at least common over here) in that you cant away all your money on booze and women and then be surprised you have none, and said the same simple principle also counts not just for citizens but also for countries and the EU. In other words: governments should stop lecturing the people about how they must be smarter with money while making a mess of things themselves. Including the EU itself. But hey, where political gain can be had...

So Patrick, where do you disagree? Do you think it is okay for the EU to misspend money? Or for governments to way overspend and then expect foreign taxpayers to fix it for them? Do you think only the common man has financial responsibilities? If you dont, then you simply agree with him.

Completely taken out of context. From what I've seen he made an analogy between state spending and personal spending. Something along the lines of 'If I were to spend all my cash on booze and women I wouldn't have any money left to pay my rent. What goes for personal finances also goes for state finances.'

His exact phrase:

"During the euro crisis, the countries of the north showed solidarity with the countries affected by the crisis. As a Social Democrat, I attach great importance to solidarity. But I can not spend all the money in alcohol and women and then ask for help. " ---- It's very very clear

Nope.
You missed at least one sentence:

That's from the FAZ.
That's the source that was quoted.

Now, which are the "countries in crisis".

Countries requiring measures:
Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Italy, Slowenia

On the other hand, only 5 countries below the "stability border".

as you can see, 2008 was a hard year for everyone. Even the most austere countries (not Germany .. surprised?) dipped in debt.

Criticize the Euro and stability pact all you want, but individually, the European countries would just fall one after the other.

I have transcribed precisely what has been said in the French press. And since his disagreeable behavior on the Greece a few years ago, I am not surprised of the inhumanity of this poor guy. It is common knowledge that this poor guy hates Greece and the countries of southern Europe more generally. As Merkel who calls them "The countries of the Club MED". This technocrat of Brussels should resign from his work

So you rely on information that is not complete and when you receive the full information, instead of changing your initial claim, you keep adding irrelevant points. Is that about right?

You do understand a contract, do you?

Complete or incomplete, this guy has its reputation well established since years. He hates Greece and the countries of the South which for him are countries of idlers. Concerning the French press, the information is complete and it is well specified, "the exact phrase". It is not my fault if the German press is a liar and a falsifier :)
