I was actually shocked that every 2nd taxi in Athens is an AMG V8 Mercedes C or E Class. (and not the fake "AMG look")
I was already suspecting that there's some completely bananas tax avoidance scheme going on with that stuff, since there's no way in this universe to run that taxi profitably (buying price is about 100k and running cost in city traffic ruinous) with the prices they charge. None. Nada. Zilch.

I mean, germans like their Mercedes Taxis, but it's the "taxi model" (bout 20.000 EUR) with the "taxi engine" (2.2litre Diesel - very durable, and moderate consumption).

Yup, its unfortunately a somewhat common cultural phenomon in the south to just go ape and assume the north will fix it for them. Fun story: When people in Athens were asked if they had a pool on their tax forms, 324 pools were declared. In reality 16974 existed. That means 98.9% Athenians commited fraud on that one item alone when they had the chance. 15 billion in tax evasion annually. Guess who has to pay for it? And when bags of cash aren't automatically given, no questions asked, we (Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavian countries) are the fascists and oppressors. Now we have someone point this simple issue out and these coutries try the 'its sexist to say that' card.

That was the way it was translated, not what he said in the interview (which is pay to view and this article was just paraphrasing).

He said "I can't spend all my money on alcohol and women and then ask you for support. One has to take responsibility. On a personal, country and European level."

He didn't mention southern Europe or any specific country.
That the southern European press translated it like that... "honni soit, qui mal y pense".

It isnt true. Its just taken out of context to fuel anti-EU sentiments. He used a common phrasing (at least common over here) in that you cant away all your money on booze and women and then be surprised you have none, and said the same simple principle also counts not just for citizens but also for countries and the EU. In other words: governments should stop lecturing the people about how they must be smarter with money while making a mess of things themselves. Including the EU itself. But hey, where political gain can be had...

So Patrick, where do you disagree? Do you think it is okay for the EU to misspend money? Or for governments to way overspend and then expect foreign taxpayers to fix it for them? Do you think only the common man has financial responsibilities? If you dont, then you simply agree with him.

Completely taken out of context. From what I've seen he made an analogy between state spending and personal spending. Something along the lines of 'If I were to spend all my cash on booze and women I wouldn't have any money left to pay my rent. What goes for personal finances also goes for state finances.'

Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Italy, Slowenia

On the other hand, only 5 countries below the "stability border".

as you can see, 2008 was a hard year for everyone. Even the most austere countries (not Germany .. surprised?) dipped in debt.

Criticize the Euro and stability pact all you want, but individually, the European countries would just fall one after the other.
