What's with all the guys using female avatars?

Maybe John and James will be popular girl's names in the future Fred.

Couldn't really care about avatar choices of course, though her gruff teamspeak voice was probably a dead give away. I should have known!

Straight married male here, but I quite like playing females in computer games ;-) When presented with the joys of an anonymous internet where one can reinvent oneself at a whim, why not play around? ;-) It's a wide world out there. I have two accounts and I'm currently running as female in one and male in the other.

Uhh, b/c they can.

My current playthough of Skyrim features a female wood elf cutthroat.

It's simple: a lot of people rather look at a woman on screen than a man. It's not about recreating or playing as yourself in a game - it's about creating and controlling a character. Although I've created "myself" first in this game, I'll definitely create a female preset as well, and probably will look at her more than myself. For me it's simply a cosmetic thing - it's better to look at. That's why I play with female characters in a lot of other games, like Mass Effect or other RPGs. I don't think it's tied to one's sexuality at all.

Part of the problem here is that your CMDR name doesn't necessarily represent who you are in-game. My CMDR name is Elyssaen, but that's because when I bought the game I thought I was choosing an account name. The character I roleplay is called Sid Riva... could just have easily been I decided to roleplay a woman. I've hand-waved 'Elyssaen' as a Pilots' Federation call sign, distinct from a personal name.
