It's hard one. First, learn how to use power management. You can use cursor keys to assign power fast to either engine, system (shields) or weapons (see Sidewinder manual for more in-depth explanation). Fly around in first scenario and learn how switch them fast. It is essential to beat hard fights. When you fly towards fighters, you need all power to the shields because otherwise they will cut you down fast. Also when flying fast them, put power into engines to increase pitch speed. And when you get them on your sights, pick by one, and put as much power you can to weapons, but don't forget that there are other three ones biting your backside.

Second, remember that fastest turning/pitch rate is when speed is in "blue" zone. Too low or too fast and you will turn really slow.

Alright, thanks for the tips, I'll be sure to practice in the first before taking on the Patrol.

Getting annoyed was one of those feelings I didn't want with this at all too.

Also very confused?! So there is no single player game yet, just the the scenarios?
I had this since installing PB2

It think it's pretty clear, the combat scenarios ARE single player after all. How would you have described it?

this is the same Alpha 1 build that the PB group got towards the end of Alpha so they could brush up on their flying until PB dropped, but this time its being rolled out to standard beta backers so they can have a go before standard beta arrives on the 29th.

its an old build that everyone else already has - this announcement is just aimed at standard beta backers only.

hope that helps to clear things up.

How does this work if you've 'gifted' a beta access package?

What username/password does the giftee use?

How do you gift purchases on you account to someone else who doesn't yet have an account? I want to share the joy but it's not obvious to me that this is even possible...

Just a quick note: The Single Player Combat Build is downloaded from store.zaonce.net, not elite.frontier.co.uk. ;)

I know I'm a bit thick at times, but I cant see any reference to being able to download the single player combat anywhere. Not when I logged on to the backers site or the merchanidse store

If this isnt the second round private beta test, then what is it?
Is there a duffer's guide or screen shot?

log into the store and click the 'my account' link, then on the right side menu select 'my downloadable products' and all being well the download icon after standard beta in your products list should show as active, give it a click and your off!

Note: the following screen shots show how things look to a standard beta backer, if you are a premium beta backer or an alpha backer you already have the Alpha 1 solo combat build so please move along, nothing for you to see here :p

Thanks for all your help.
Sadly my std beta still hasn't the "Download" icon that you have kindly shown me. I think a message to them is required.

"Standard Beta Backers - You now have access to missions like everyone else"

Would have been a more accurate title IMHO.

I just spent 4 mins looking round the store!

Single player combat now available! a little misleading!

Anyway good to know everyone is on the same build now

Well done

It's the same scenarios, but the same branch as PB2.2.

Just to encourage you all...

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!!!

Don't give up! It's really fun and satisfying once you master it

And finally... Welcome to the *REAL* BDSSE!!!! :D

Dazzy.

Woohoo!

I just saw the email from Elite, and I'm very happy that I can start learning how to fly before my standard beta starts! It will definitely take me some time... my first try with mouse+keyboard was pretty pathetic...

Now all I miss is a HOTAS... Come on, Saitek, speed up those production lines!

I would recommend doing them multiple times and ...

... when you do get into Beta version they will all reset so do them all again, and some of them get much harder, 'Supply Strike' especially.

Oh and I have never got to the end of 'Incursion'

I just love how FD manages to beat expectations. This probably will make the day of thousands of commanders who were counting on waiting still 3 more weeks... :p No probes, no cheap promises... quietly overdelivering... keep it up!

Yes you're right, this was a great surprise to get this email, a bit like christmas before christmas :) Needless to say that the remaining hour to spend at work seemed very long !!

standard beta

Hello, have 2 questions regarding Standard Beta.

1. If I join today I have chance to play combat single player missions only? Cannot visit Space stations? No exploring? No trading? \even in single mission mode?/
2. After Standard beta expires I have a free access to all stages of beta, gamma and final release of the game?/axcept for major addons of course./?

thanks for your time in advance

Hey, thanks Frontier, a lovely pressie... Great to join the ED party - pew pew splat! Just need to acquire a pc worthy of the combat release!.. :p

1. The full standard Beta is not due for release until 29th July, the single player missions are an unexpected bonus for beta backers, it was never promised as part of the original beta package (as far as I know).

1a. You can visit space stations on the official beta release date (29th July);
1b. We do not yet know if exploring will be included in the standard beta release, Frontier are releasing updates on what to expect in the standard beta leading up to the 29th July. Usually we get a newsletter every week with major updates expected. It also depends on what you mean by exploring, you can visit a range of locations in the premium beta but I wouldn't call it exploring.
1c. Trading is included already in the premium beta so it will be in the standard beta, it is a cut down version of the overall trading model but you can trade, some PB players find the current trading limited and difficult, hopefully standard beta will bring more trading. But I do not think you can trade in the single player missions.
1d. You didn't ask but you will probably wonder at some point, mining is not included in the premium beta and we don't know if it'll be in the standard beta.

2. Yes ;)

Based on your questions I would suggest waiting until the 29th July before you start playing, of course you could buy now but you won't be able to do the things you mentioned until your in the persistent multiplayer universe on 29th July. If you really want to do these things you can buy the premium beta which has all of this, except exploring.

The single player missions are designed to help pilots get used to the controls on their ship and general Elite Dangerous game mechanics.

Hope this helps.

1 if you join now, you will only be able to play single player combat scenarios until July 29. However, this is great practice for the main beta, so I would recommend upgrading now rather than waiting if you want to bet standard beta. There is quite a steep learning curve to start with so it's good to spend a few hours just learning to fly :). Alpha backers only had single player scenarios for over a month
